Sermon delivered on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
SERMON DESCRIPTION
Since Mitt Romney became the Republican nominee for president, many people have wondered, "What exactly is Mormonism?" "Is it Christianity? "Do they really believe Jesus will return to earth in Missouri?"
There are many questions and much interest, and there is even an award-winning Broadway musical called The Book of Mormon. Rick Fortner and a host of friends have worked up a special song from the musical to accompany our service exploring the foundations of Mormonism and whether any of this should matter when we step into the voting booth in the coming election.

I was very worried with the way this video started because I was raised Mormon but I am so very glad I finished watching, what a great way of putting it! I have been looking for a church that does not put different religions down. I have always felt in my heart that every church is right, just not right for everyone. I think I have found mine! I look forward to learning more about Unitarians. Everything I have learned thus far has warmed my heart.

What happened? Did you find a home in a Unitarian Universalist community? It’s been 3 years since you wrote this comment. I would love to hear an update.

I am a former Mormon, thought this video was FANTASTIC, though Mormons do not accept the concept of Hell.

This is the best talk i have ever heard given by a non-Mormon about Mormon beliefs. Very accurate for the most part and given respectfully. I am a Mormon and want to provide a few corrections for those who are interested. Latter day saints do support the equal rights of men and women this is clearly explained in "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." I think the issue here is that people become confused with "equality" versus "sameness". 1+3 and 2+2 are equal but very different in the way they are equal and thank God that we are not all the same. recognizing a difference in roles between men and women in no way diminishes their equality. and I agree with Spence Redford below. it was not until the final and crowning creation of woman that God finally declared all of his work complete and good. LDS doctrine is that Christ will return to Jerusalem not Missouri. this was simply a misrepresentation of LDS belief in the sermon. however, with that being said, we do believe that the city of new Jerusalem will be built in Missouri and that the construction will be presided over by Christ. As far as homosexuality is concerned you can see the church's official position on LDS.org.

Before you make those claims, please study the history of Mormon feminism and polygamy. A careful study of mormonism does not support the view that the LDS church promotes equality.

Actually, the doctrine is that Jesus will come to Missouri. Go fact check.

Besides a few inaccuracies with our perceived mistreatment of women, I think this is a very thoughtful and considerate portrait of Mormonism which I greatly appreciate. I can tell he has done his research and thought deeply about religious similarities and differences. I wish more Christians took the time to consider the good things about Mormons for once. After all, we do some pretty good things :)

The mistreatment of women by Mormons is not a misperception. Please study the history of Mormon feminism and polygamy. The problems are not just in the past.

We can justify and rationalize any set of beliefs by picking and choosing what we agree with or don't like... The point is, the basic fact of religion is a lie. We don't need false beliefs to be good, to be moral and to live in a community. Humans could be more humane if we knew and believed the simple truth... we need each other. We don't need imaginary friends.

Actually, polygamy is still very much apart of modern LDS doctrine. Also, fundamentalists and LDS doctrines and culture are much more similar than most people think. Some people even attend both LDS and other Mormon churches. Mormon polygamists are just as Mormon as LDS people. Garments represent the LDS polygamous and sexist doctrines. Many people report experiencing many emotions and a jump in both self-esteem and libido upon deciding to stop wearing temple garments. For more information, look up The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy by Carol Lynne Pearson and A Year of Polygamy podcast by Lindsey Hansen Park.

It's my understanding the Community of Christ, the "other" major branch of Mormonism, is more accepting of LGBT people and has woman pastors.

Well how did the Hopewell Indians get here?.. and, where are the 10 tribes of Israel? Keep other churches out of your church in which you are not apart of and we will get along. (I retract this statement) Christ and Heavenly Father are two separate beings, Christ is not "Heavenly Father in an Earthly Form" Christ sits at the right hand of the Heavenly Father in Heaven, thus he is not the Father - Hebrews 1:3 Christ and Heavenly Father are seen physically standing side by side as two separate people in Heaven - Acts 7:55-56 When Jesus was caught up into heaven, he sat next to God - Mark 16:19 God anointed Jesus Christ with the Holy Ghost - Acts 10:28 Father loves Christ, and Christ only does that which the Father has already previously done himself - John 5:19-20 splinter groups of our religion 1. fundamentalist latter-day saint in Colorado city Arizona. 2. Reformed latter-day saints- 3. Kingston Group We are all spirit children of God because we came from God. So by default Satan is the spirit brother of God, cause we came from God. Because Satan is a created being. Cause simply..God created all things. We all lived with Heavenly Father in a premortal life before Earth was created, and we are supposed to return The writer explains that we existed before the earth was created - Proverbs 8:22-31 We began as spirits before we had bodies of flesh - Galatians 3:3 Christ states that no man goes to Heaven unless he originally came from there in the first place - John 3:13 Can you explain the earth work mounds in the woods preacher?...

Yeah, the faith that passively accepted the slave trade, burned Giordano Bruno at the stake for refusing to denounce his belief that god was different than understood and that the sun just another star, celebrated Hitler's birthday publicly, systematically covered up overt sexual assault, and was responsible for the inquisition... Yep that's the "True Faith" right?
