Yeah, not only can you get some cool sounds from it, it's a lot of fun too!

Still prefer Shade but this is pretty cool also.

I haven't tried Shade yet, but it looks pretty cool! It looks like Morph EQ is simpler and cheaper. I wouldn't mind trying both at some point and comparing them.

7:00 So the plugin uses CPU and not the GPU to render the UI?
@idlethoughtsmusic

That's a great question that I don't know the answer to. I doubt there's any modern software out that doesn't use GPU rendering at some point under the hood, at least for real-time graphics. Whether they create their graphics using their own framework and a low-level API such as Vulkan or OpenGL, or use a higher-level framework like JUCE (which I know supports OpenGL), I would imagine it's all GPU rendering under the hood (for the graphics, not audio). But I could be totally wrong because although I have experience with software development and graphics (but no experience developing audio plugins), I've only used OpenGL for any complex real-time graphics I've made, and don't have a lot of experience with using higher-level APIs for graphics. However, I just ran this experiment again and saw the same effect - when I made the MorphEQ plugin small, Ableton used less CPU, and when I made the plugin window large, it used a bit more CPU. And when I have it large and close the plugin window, it goes back to the smaller amount of CPU. It likely isn't enough to cause a problem on most computers, and you likely won't have enough plugin windows open to cause a problem, but it is something I noticed. I tried a few different plugins and saw a similar effect for similar plugins that plot the frequency spectrum. Baby Audio's Smooth Operator did the same thing, and Voxengo Span maybe(?) did it to a smaller extent. I haven't tried other DAWs. Perhaps it's a "feature" of graphic EQ plugins? So in summary, I'm really not sure. Minimal Audio makes great plugins so I wouldn't let this discourage you, it just may be a "feature" of graphic EQ plugins.

@@idlethoughtsmusic Well, that's an interesting observation in any event. I should spend a little more time in Reaper's performance monitor. I've seen a few plugins that list OpenGL support as a requirement so hardware acceleration definitely seems to be the trend. I'm curious to see how GPU Audio will factor into all this.

Yeah, hardware acceleration for graphics has been the standard for many years. However, hardware acceleration for audio is fairly new. I haven't tried any of GPU Audio's plugins yet, but I'm interested in seeing where it leads...

@@idlethoughtsmusic I downloaded the betas for GPU Audio but haven't had a chance yet to put them through their paces. I have been following them pretty closely, though, on YT and Discord. Where it leads only time will tell... :)

Can it morph at a point in mixdown from one eq setting, like maybe a 1930s radio and return back to flat, but only once without looping the action?
@idlethoughtsmusic
@idlethoughtsmusic Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! The morphing is done using a knob. In the video, I put an LFO on the morph knob for demonstration purposes, but you can just turn it once without any looping to get the effect you're looking for.

How do I link a LFO to the Parameters? ( TYIA ) Michael

Good question! An example of how to do this in Ableton is shown at 6:35.

@@idlethoughtsmusic Sorry🤦‍♀ I left out in Native Instruments Maschine software. Also is there any particular external LFO Tool I should use???
@idlethoughtsmusic
@idlethoughtsmusic Жыл бұрын
@@vertptc Unfortunately, I don't have the Machine software, so I won't be of much help there. I assume you're running standalone? As for an LFO tool - in Ableton Suite, you have the LFO tool, but for a good 3rd party plugin suitable for other DAWs, you might check out MidiShaper by Cableguys. I don't have this one, but I have some of their other plugins and they make great tools. They also have instructions on their site on how to use it with Maschine. For a classic, you could also try LFO tool by XFer Records (made by the same person who makes Serum). I haven't tried it, but I've heard good things about it.

Automation isn't working- what am I doing wrong? -.-
@idlethoughtsmusic
@idlethoughtsmusic 6 ай бұрын
That could be a number of reasons. Are you trying to turn the morph knob (and will the knob turn if you try to turn it yourself or is it disabled)? Have you set a path for the filter to move? Iif not the knob will be disabled. Is your automation lane attached to the parameter you're trying to automate? Is the automation active (in ableton, it will be greyed out if disabled, and that happens when you adjust it manually once you've set the automation). If it isn't working for a custom made filter, have you tried a preset to see if it's something in your filter settings?

Thanks for your response! Morph knob is not disabled. (I'm using Logic Pro). Tried the presets. Tried on different audio and midi tracks. I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I'm stumped! @@idlethoughtsmusic

That's a tough one! I've not used logic pro so I haven't run into this problem yet. If the morph knob has an effect when you manually change it, maybe it's something with the automation interface to logic pro? I'm assuming the same automation technique you're using works with other plug-ins?
