Oh to live in a climate like yours where cars don't rot before your eyes! My split screen moggy didn't have any jacking points, or decent place to jack it up left! It was like net curtaining after I stripped it. Sadly, never finished it, had to let it go for various reasons. Always good to see the Mrs involved 👍

That would be a sad ending. I'm very lucky that this is in such good shape even with our favourable climate. I'm glad I've finally found a project the Mrs is interested in. Cheers

Well Mr B, this is taking me back over 30 years to the first time I restored my 1970 Traveller, I'm now in the middle of doing it again! Believe me, so far you have been extremely lucky firstly finding such a decent car to start on and secondly with a relatively easy strip down. I ran out of juicy swearwords struggling with all the badly rusted nuts and bolts---that was in the UK---salty roads in winter. Great series, enjoying it immensely, thanks for sharing.

Fantastic, I'm glad this series is bringing back fond memories. Stripping the driver's side is proving more of a challenge, the nuts and bolts seem to be a lot more difficult to get out. I'm getting there slowly though. Thanks for watching

Good job there, and with good assistance! Overall the car looks super solid. Glad to hear that parts availability is good, but even if you had to make some of those panels by hand, they appear to be mostly flat and easy enough to create. I'm jealous.. I live in the SMA part of the world, where rust is usually a bit more extensive.

Blimey mate that bodyshell looks pretty sound. You can hear the quality of the metal when you ding it. Its why they were pretty heavy for a small car. It is certainly worth getting the shell and all the panels to a shotblasting outfit and then etch prime it. Beats hell out of wire brushes and you end up with a sound base for paint. I am doing a '78 Mini 1000 and it worked for me.... Nice work though and I hope you have fun but you were VERY lucky with the wing bolts!
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 жыл бұрын
It's very impressive how well it has held up. Shotblasting is an option but I don't like outsourcing work! I'll probably start doing it by hand then get fed up with it and send it to the blasters... The rear wing on the other side is proving a bit more stubborn to get off. Cheers!

Just a thought, use stainless nuts and bolts for putting back the cill finishers, and MIG welding just takes a bit of practice, I found gasless, flux cored "MIG" is a bit too fierce for bodywork, I use a cheap outfit and a pub cylinder and it always works fine for me. Good luck.
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 жыл бұрын
There will be stainless nuts and bolts as well as plenty of rust proofing on the finished product! I have a few welding friends so I should be able to get hold of a better setup and some hands on advice. I will definitely be doing the work myself though, all part of the learning and enjoying. Cheers!

How much did the body flex after the doors were removed? (This car looks reasonable sound, but if the chassis's a filigree of rust, the doors may be the only things keeping the car from folding in half.)

Unless you absolutely have too, I would not recommend you removing the rear windscreen, they are a pig to get out and an even bigger pig to put back. The problem seems to be caused by the screen rubbers being thicker than the originals, so you have to exert a lot of pressure to push them home, original glass is getting harder to find. The rusty panel on the inner wing is called the flitch. Welding is not the dark arts that many will have you believe, practice makes perfect and cleanliness is king. If it helps, this has to be the best example I have seen, solid inner wings? unheard of in the UK. Good luck, looking forward to more.
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice. I had heard about the issues with the replacement rear window seals. The current one is cracked and perished and I think it would spoil the look of the finished car if I didn't replace it. I shall consider the options. As for welding, I can make metal stick to metal but I only have a gasless mig which is less than ideal for bodywork. I'm working on a better solution. Even for an NZ car I'm amazed at how solid it all is. I have a late 70s Holden that has been on the road more recently that is in a far worse state with holes everywhere.

Push and peel the windscreen rubbers from inside out use a screwdriver to help move the rubber as you use a bit of pressure on the glass with your feet the glass is pretty strong but just pressure don’t kick it
