Finally getting into stripping down the 948cc OHV A-series engine from the Morris Minor. Needs a good overhaul but nothing too scary looking so far. Today I take out the pistons and crankshaft and strip the block down.
The car is a 1958 Morris Minor 1000 with the 948cc engine. Last WOF was in 1995 and has been parked up ever since.
Here's the rest of the series:

Bloody hell, that wasn't a big thread for all the torque you needed to undo it! I'm always nervous when I have to extend a nut lathe with a pipe, so feeling for you there. Keep it up, its great to see someone keeping it real. Sort of Mighty Car Mods, NZ style. Just spotted the MCM work gloves...I could do with a pair myself. Just about to go and tweak my motorbike chain tension.

Haha I didn't expect it to be that tight! Fewer turbos on my channel compared to MCM, but that could change!

I wouldn't worry too much about the sludge, it's normal. Back when these engines were built oils were very different without the detergents. Modern oils hold the crap in suspension and carry it too the filter, old oils let it drop out at the lowest point, the filter just catches the big stuff, like bolts and bits breaking off

Would probably pay to replace the camshaft sprocket chain tensioning rubbers if you can get them, they would save you a headache with rattling timing chain in the future, also check the crankshaft front pulley where they are spot welded together, they sometimes come apart.

A Series sump sludge seems to be the norm on them, used to be an indicator of a short trip car, never really getting hot. Same goes for the wear on the big ends etc. I'd say pay close attention to the oil pump as they use to be problematic with wear. We used to release all the crank, con rod bearings, pull the crank out, then pull the pistons out the bottom. Reason being, they often had a small lip around the top of the bore, carbon, whatever, that used to break the rings when pulling them out the top. Bit of TLC, this'll be a fine little engine 👍

I have no doubt this car mainly did short trips based on the history I got. There wasn't much of a carbon buildup on the top of the bores but that's a handy tip. Thanks for the advice 😃

Looks not too awful, but you're definitely going to need to find a good machine shop to get the valves, crank and cylinders taken care of. Should be good as new once it's done though. Might need to find a better solution for that crank bolt when it comes time to torque it, too ;)

Seems a very deep sump... I'm sure our domestic market ones were shallower.... Perhaps it's a hot climate version? I also noticed the blanking plate on the head, meaning this car has no cabin heater! I had a '61 Austin A40, and the period manual for that had a chapter on installing the optional heater!!! How times have changed!

Why wouldn't you use an electric impact wrench to undo the capscrews/bolts? Or an air one for that matter. You should only use 6 point sockets, but I'm sure you know that. Timing sprockets and chain should be oily, yours look dry. Better make sure you are getting good oil flow to the chain!

Didn't they expect a full rebuild after a maximum of 100k kms back in the 50s? If that's true yours doesn't look too bad at all! On a somewhat unrelated topic: I wonder how many people in continental Europe bought one of these and were royally peeved to find all-Imperial hardware the first time they tried wrenching on them! Most of Europe, except plumbing fixtures and some steam engine guts, was metric by the 1880s. I definitely know how my dad reacted to realising the used Transit he'd bought back in the late 70s was a pre-metric UK model!
@Badgertronix
@Badgertronix 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't look too bad in there to be fair. Dealing with all the non metric fasteners has been a nightmare. I've never had to use so many different spanners and sockets for any other job.
