His Time covers hang in the National Portrait Gallery and he holds an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Boston. Filmed at Mort’s home studio in Long Island, New York, the legendary artist talked to his friend and fellow cartoonist John Reiner, the artist on the hugely popular features The Lockhorns, Howard Huge and Laugh Parade.
In a warm and enthralling conversation, the pair reflected on Mort’s path from his teenage days as a comic book assistant artist to his rapid ascent to the pinnacle of the profession, and discussed the attention to detail and quest for cartooning excel;;once that haas been the hallmark of Drucker’s illustrious career.

Fantastic! Love Mort since I was a kid in Brazil. When I migrated to the USA in 85, and later broke in the comic book business, I got a hold of Mort's phone number and called him. His wife, Barbara answered the phone. She taught me so much about the business in that phone chat many years ago! The Druckers!!! What a Wonderful Team!

It’s cool seeing you here-I grew up reading the Action Bible before bed as a kid, and now I’m a teenager interested in drawing and making caricatures as a hobby

Mort was the most gracious and humble genius you could imagine. At the end of a large annual cartoonists gathering, he said to me, "Joe, I'm sorry I didn't get to talk to you." He'd been busy all day, being sought out by young artists for critiques and sharing his wisdom. I said, "Mort, you're like the Godfather. Everyone wants to talk to you. You don't owe me any apologies." Here was the great Mort Drucker apologizing to a nobody like me! He was a beautiful soul.

It just jaw-dropping to see the shear AMOUNT of work he did in his career - his talent is immeasurable! I loved studying all the detail in his drawings as a kid, he was by far my favorite MAD artist.

A towering master of caricature and illustration, and one of the great comedians of the 20th century. Too many classic images from Mad TV and movie parodies come to mind. So few even come close to him (yes, Jack Davis is one, Duncan Macpherson is another). How much delight this man brought to my life. Great interview. RIP MD.

Thanks for this. Mort Drucker is a hero. As a kid I lived for Mad Magazine, and despite all the other talent, his movie take-offs have never been equaled. When I grew up and started doing commercial illustration, I looked to him and still do.

Great to hear from a master in his own words. The value of what he says - observe, learn from the greats, accept criticism...- all should be adhered to by young and old alike. Like Mort, I was mentored by a great artist from the NCS - Burne Hogarth - and followed his advice to always draw. Thanks for taking the time to get Mort's words on record!

I wanted all the parodies to be illustrated by Mort. Jack was a star but I just loved Mort’s nuances, which were mixed in with the calculated garishness of caricature. He ALWAYS aimed for gentle ribbing vs cruelty

15.05 - this interview was conducted entirely within 4.02 pm; or, possibly, 4.02am. I hoped it's the latter, although the light in the window told me different. Time stands still when you're talking with the greats. Mort and Jobn Severin were my idea of High Art in the 80's.

Few things stand-up after 64 years of living. Jimi, Twilight Zone, and Mort Drucker do. People who don't know what it takes to become an artist probably watch this video and think Mort Drucker is just a quiet little man but, for those who have struggled to learn how to draw understand that he was as tough and driven in his world as any athlete is in theirs.
