Hello everyone!
And as always welcome back to yet another video!
Today, with us all now In the post age of the new era,I wanted to hone In and focus on one particular character who has caused quite a stir amongst the community, and that Is the blue ninja poster boy of the series, Sub Zero!
But he Is not a version of the character doned by the very familiar Kuai liang, but Instead, that of his older brother and the first sub zero of the franchise, Bi han!
An indivudal who had only relinquished It In death to later return as the wraith Noob Saibot, but then the timeline has been reset, now taking us to this very new, and very different present.
Whilst Bi Han hast been restored to that of the mantle many feel this iteration of the character has missed the mark, whilst their are others who feel like this Is a true and somewhat accurate depiction of the character.
So In todays video, I will lightly be touching on the history of bihan as a way lining up the influences that has led to his character, to where here is now, as I believe that this version of Bi Han was someone foreshadowed a very long time ago, so with that said, lets go to the very beginning and talk about the first Sub Zero!

@XZAVIER-DAA-GOD Quan Chi planned it out. Both Hanzo & Bi-Han were top assassins in their respected clans & most likely wanted them under his control & since he couldn't control them living he made sure he could dead where he made them both their his wraiths to do his bidding.

@@shin-gokusatsu645 you do realize that this wasn’t the case in the original timeline that you worship soo much right? They became specters on their own after death and had their own missions which had nothing to do with serving Quan Chi as his “creations” since he never made them in the midway timeline, that’s purely an NRS thing.

@@gabrieltejada1697There is nothing to suggest that Noob came back by himself before the NRS timeline. It’s just stated that he’s someone loyal to Shinnok. Until Deception & Armageddon, it’s said that he was corrupted

I love MK1 and the direction they took the new interpretations. And I agree, there's a lot of room to take Bi-Han. I think the depiction was great. He has a lot of anti-hero potential.

Bi-Han's betrayal was too early. Seeing him as Sub-Zero again working with the good guys was awesome. He brought tension and great interactions with the other characters. It would've been interesting to see Bi-Han's reaction to Liu Kang's reveal of the past, especially when it came to Noob-Saibot. I hope he still gets his own chapter as Sub-Zero or as Noob-Saibot.

In that very same prequel game that sets up MK4 Bi-Han still did ALOT of those things out of selfish reasons and only embarked on the quest for Raiden because he had no choice since it was either he listen to him or fight him over the amulet (which was something he was paid to do by Quan Chi) plus he always had a tainted soul with evil that was even confirmed by Raiden as well.

He was ordered to take up the quest, it wasn’t his selfishness but loyalty to his clan that motivated him. A huge part of the game was that bi-Han wanted to change and not be so cold. He spares Serena, a demon who tried to kill him, for no real benefit to himself. The game literally ends with Raiden assuring him that his fate isn’t sealed and he doesn’t have to be the ruthless killer he’s expected to be.

@Carmine360 if you had a brain & actually kept up with the lore Quan Chi *NEVER* hired Bi-Han! Quan Chi went straight to the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei & hired them for their service & since Bi-Han was the Lin Kuei's top assassin the Grandmaster *ORDERED* Bi-Han to get the task done! Bi-Han *NEVER TRUSTED* sorcerers & had a distaste for them! He wasn't selfish he was naive & ignorant to the evil that his clan was doing same goes for Kuai Liang, Smoke & Cyrax.

@@shin-gokusatsu645 if you had a 🧠 then you would realize what you said is a major contradiction on soo many levels and only makes Bi-Han look more like a mindless soldier with total obedience than he already was to begin with. If he truly wanted to change he would’ve abandoned the clan right there from the get go instead listening to the evil grandmaster and just follow orders. As Jade once said “blind loyalty is never a good thing” and don’t even try to use the retirement plan he had as an excuse when that never came into fruition nor is it canon.

@@protalghulnist4126 the main focus of the game was to setup MK4 (it even has a preview of it that came with the game back on PlayStation) plus the story itself wasn’t exactly what I call an Oscar winning performance given how games at the time were more focused on gameplay and content rather than story and dialogue (unless we are talking RPGs like Final Fantasy)

Tobias's intent was Umk3 Sub Zero to be Bi-han. Personal Head Canon: That Shinnok and Quan Chi stripped any good and morals out of Bi-han when converting Bi-han into Noob Saibot. Reference MKD

Which is technically a retcon considering before MK deception Noob Saibot was his own character that had nothing to do with the Sub-Zero brothers until the writers decided to change that.

as a story teller myself, I think the Noob-Saibot we'd get could/might be the former grandmaster, Bi-han's & Kuai-Liang's father. It would meret potential. also, in Bi-han's ladder ending, it looks like they're not turn Lin-kuei into cyborgs, but building robots to expand the ranks. if thats so, then somewhere along the line Cyrax might jump ship and join the Shirai-Ryu. as he was always against the Cyber Initative in past timelines.

Great video HBTW. I like that you brought up Mythologies to explain Bi Han character because I didn't really think about it. But it makes sense. But as to my thoughts on Bi Han in this new timeline. I don't mind him going down a villain path. At some point the Shirai Ryu needs to happen. So a course there will be conflict between him and Kuai Liang. He's right now in an interesting position. I don't want him to go back to being Noob Sailbot. It been done to death. But we will have to see what they will do with him in the next game. I feel like give him a story where his arrogance cost him the Lin Kuei. By having Sektor betrayed him. Taking over the Cyber Lin Kuei and forcing Bi Han to run away to have to ask for the help of his brother clan. And with assisting the Shirai Ryu win over the battle with the Lin Kuei. It makes Bi Han see how strong and powerful his brother clan is. As he begins to realize what went wrong. He lost everything while his brother clan is still around going strong. It really shows he has a lot of self reflecting he must do. And after the war and spending time in a Shirai Ryu prison for some years. He's let out to explore the world with a different set of eyes. During his journey he helps a village who has been taken over by some Black Dragon members. As he save the villagers and in return the villagers go with him as he reform the new Lin Kuei who new purpose is to serve and protect Earthrealm. While making amends with Outworld. And which his last and final story of this timeline. He has a battle with Noob Sailbot but this time the person who becomes Noob Sailbot is his father who he must save from the corruption. That's how I would write his story.

I do not like the new changes. Bi-Han yes he was the first Subzero and he was the earliest exposure most fans had and the rivalry between Subzero and Scorpion was the biggest element of Mortal Kombat franchise in lore and gameplay and competive matches. Taking the Scorpion mantle from Hanzo Hasashi and giving to Kuai Liang feels unnecessary and ruins multiple character story developments that has been a staple of the Mortal Kombat universe from the beginning. I didn't see why we couldn't have two Subzeros in a game. We had Kuai Liang and Frost in the same game. They could have made their attacks diverse enough to make them different. Hell they could have named Bi-Han Grandmaster. We know eventually he will become Noob Saibot, so it wouldn't have been that big of an issue moving forward. I am not a fan of this new take on Bi-Han, Kuai Liang and Hanzo Hasashi. I already want a reset to this reboot.

I personally would love a full remake in next generation graphics but idk why NRS refuses to listen to the fans on that. Yes, definitely keep the story the same but imagine that story on the new consoles?

Mythologies could have been better written, just things that were outdated. For instance, interaction between Bi Han and Sareena didn’t feel like a relationship, due to it being so brief; also, Bi Han being able to kill Elemental Gods while being mortal, really? I’m glad NetherRealm made their games, as they are better written, not in a Christopher Nolan level, but certainly million percent better than Michael Bay level of storytelling.

@@BlazerK1914Oh for sure Mythologies should have been better written. MK92 alluded to Bi-Han wanting to leave & that the reasoning he was at the tournament was to assassinate Shang Tsung & retire. So they should have better alluded to that in Mythologies. Maybe when Bi-Han is given the assassination mission instead of Shang Tsung, the man who hires Shang Tsung could be there & they could look to have a subtle look of familiarity. Implying that Bi-Han made a deal with him so that he could get the money & run. A perfect reason to have Bi-Han spare Sareena would be for Sareena to say the same words Hanzo says before he dies & Bi-Han spares Sareena because he remembers how much Hanzo despises him & wants to see if having mercy wouldn’t yield bad consequences for him. Also, I disagree on NRS writing better. MK11 is proof that they couldn’t write a story if their lives depended on it.

@@Zaire_39 I disagree with your opinion about NRS. Midway games were made just fine, but the main problem I have with them is the lack of Show don’t Tell, and NRS’ MK games did that well. Midway games had to rely on texts for each character endings, but NRS games shows by cutscenes, cinematics, even has narrators for endings as well. Also, I don’t care about characters such Sareena, Hsu Hao, and other characters because they’re forgettable. Characters such as D’Vorah, who I like, proves to be memorable, even useful than the likes of Kira and other forgettable ones. Also, if Bi Han can defeat Gods, so too can Cassie Cage, who I also like. NetherRealm MK games are awesome, and so too are their stories.

To be honest we are still getting to know bi-han. We know noob-saibot more than we do him. Besides we are finally getting to know him now. Back in the original comic book series sub-zero was good and scorpion was evil. But they retcon that.

bi han was never a hero though he was an assassin and will always be an assassin he reluctantly had to play the hero when raiden confronted him forcing him to get the medallion back the reason why he possibly spared sareena is probably because he was worried about his soul being tainted and would want to show some leniency towards defeated enemies also I think the chapters in mk1 was shorter than what they were in mk11 and mkx I feel like the Lin Kuei chapter on it's own should be a bit longer as we closer to the end of the game then

He wasn’t a good person by any means but his circumstances would lead you to have a bit of sympathy for him. I'm fine with Bi Hans change in fact I think it's brilliant. My only issue was it was too obvious and a little too fast that he was going evil. It would've been better if he was kind of in the grey area and developed into a villain. I'm okay with him being evil just a little too quick with it.

I'm fine with how he is in MK1, I think its interesting and I'd rather keep him alive than have him be Noob tbh, though maybe him being Cyber Sub-Zero after getting his ass kicked by his brother in a sort of Darth Vader story would be interesting. I think his younger brother becoming Noob and then the established in the endings Hanzo become the new Scorpion after. Also Bi Han still does messed up stuff in previous timelines and is an assassin after all, in the first season we saw a lot of versions of him at least help Quan Chi kill Scorpion's family. And one final note on the people who don't like him being darker in this timeline, in Mythologies they said he has a dark stain on his soul just on his own, and if Baraka and Reptile can become better people in this timeline and people like it, I don't get why the other way around wouldn't work, especially since he's shown to be a fairly dynamic character and not a one note villain like Reiko and Havik.

Pre-NRS Bi-Han was way more nuanced and complex than this. This guy is a complete fucking asshole for no apparent reason whatsoever. Even if we accept that, you mean to tell me that his brother never picked up on that at all at any point of his life? That he sincerely believed him to be a decent person? It irks me, because when Bi-Han died in the other timelines, Kuai Liang literally took up his mantle and sought revenge for his death. He wouldn't go to those lengths if there wasn't shared love between them. I always saw Bi-Han as a guy who just did his duty as a member of the Lin Kuei, though not a cartoonish villain. Why would Quan Chi have to remove parts of Bi-Han just to get him to obey him as Noob Saibot? Clearly, because he wasn't pure evil. Now, he is a traitor that spat on his father's legacy, betrayed both his brothers, and even worse, will almost be definitely be reduced to a mid tier generic villain that will get reintroduced and re-clapped in a one and done chapter for Kuai Liang in Mk13🤦‍♀️

Bi-Han: Quan chi told me that you sent me because my soul was tainted with evil….is that true? Raiden: you are a superb warrior Sub-Zero…only you can control your destiny. Bi-Han: was that a yes…or a no? Raiden: that was a yes……but only you can change it. Literally the lines taken from MK Sub-Zero mythologies where it’s been confirmed that Bi-Han was never a saint and always had darkness in his heart due to his past deeds serving the original Lin Kuei (who were not good guys until Kuai Liang takes over and reforms the clan)

I have a theory on what will happen to Bi-Han if the rumors of Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob are coming in a future Kombat Pack/Story DLC. We see Bi-Han embrace Sektor's cyber lin kuei, but what if he doesn't know the extent? What if Bi-Han believes it's just building robots instead of fully converting existing members? By the time he finds out the truth, it would be too late, and he would die at the hands of a newly cyberized Cyrax and Sektor, with Sektor becoming the new grandmaster. Then, if he is resurrected as Noob, we could perhaps later see him and Kuai-Liang reconcile and join forces against their former clan. This time being the Shirai Ryu vs. Lin Kuei.

I'm liking how they did Sub-Zero story because they taking their time and doing everybody's origin but also they mix it with old school and new school which I think is pretty cool because not just Mortal Kombat is doing it call of duty is it's like a reboot origin story but still mixed with the old school ingredients I mean it worked for Batman The dark Knight trilogy Batman beginning that that was supposed to be a prequel but he did so well they went on to remake the whole universe but they still use that old school ingredients Ed Boon was smart he knew what he was doing

I honestly have no problem with him being a villain, I just wish there was more insight as to why he believes that his way is the right way. I also wish he wasn’t so cartoonish. I hope in the next game they tone it down a bit so he’s still an asshole but it doesn’t feel like they were writing for totally spies.

This is the most terrible interpretation of him & if Scorpion could get redemption throughout the series continuity then why couldn't Bi-Han? Noob Saibot is Quan Chi's creation perfected & you left out in his deceptions ending when Shujinko said if Bi-Han was still alive he would of took pride in his brother to see how much he has grown. The way Boon went was the short & lazy way since most of these new age MK fans think Bi-Han is evil & Scorpion has always been "good" since he has a family. This was no where near what John Tobias had intended when doin' MK Mythologies plus Bi-Han was stripped from redemption due to Scorpion taking advantage & killing him during when Shang Tsung destroying the island. Give or take his intentions in his MK 1 ending was to assassinate Shang Tsung & retire from his profession of being an assassin. His personality is a Copy & Paste from Sektor's personality. Comparing him to Noob in MK11 isn't a good comparison given that Kronika is Shinnok's mother & in the NRS Timeline Noob never defected compared to his Midway Timeline version. *GIVE BI-HAN HIS REDEMPTION!*

Only OG fans would remember that Noob Saibot originally was his own character and had nothing to do with Bi-Han before they made the retcon that he was secretly the original Sub-Zero the entire time.

@gabrieltejada1697 yeah I know but that was some good writing having him being Kuai Liang's older brother to at least give his character some depth to it & how he became the wraith Noob Saibot. With Quan Chi coming into the mix post MK4 its pretty clever how he conspired to have Earthrealm's 2 powerful assassins under his control. Especially setting them up in different events knowing he'll get Hanzo's soul during that double cross hire at the temple for the map & then getting Bi-Han's soul during the Tournament.

Yeah the double standards with fans when it comes to Hanzo & Bi-Han is hilarious. Hanzo has done far worse than Bi-Han in both timelines but because Hanzo screams for ‘muh fam & clan’ apparently he’s a good character. Hanzo: chooses to be an assassin, goes to hell because of his bad deeds. Becomes Kuai Liang’s secret protector then later chooses to help Shinnok invade Edenia & Earth just to kill Kuai Liang. He may have been manipulated into believing Kuai Liang killed his family but the fact he went to make his anger everyone’s problem is an evil choice. Then when he finds out the truth he doesn’t even attempt to right his wrong. But yes, truly a good person🗿 Then in Armageddon he tries to destroy reality to spite the Elder Gods. Truly an honourable man🗿 Then there’s what he does in MKX. He deserved to have his clan obliterated by Dark Raiden & to be hated by Earth but the plot just ignores it because ‘reasons’ Then we have invasions mode. He looks into multiple timelines & when he sees that his wife has been killed in all timelines & the one timeline where she’s alive she’s happy with someone else, he decides to try to destroy the timeline. This is inexcusable no matter what people say & instead of him being punished, they reward him. MK (NRS in particular) has this massive thing with trying to justify every horrid thing that Hanzo does which weakens his arc of becoming a better person & overall makes him look like an entitled little shit. Also, the ending feels like character assassination because Hanzo would never be happy to see Harumi in as much anger & pain as Hanzo.

To be honest Quan Chi being the reason for Hanzo & Bi-Han’s rivalry was one of the worst retcons ever. The OG games had Scorpion come back out of sheer hatred for Bi-Han & that was good because it meant that although Bi-Han wanted to change, the consequences of his actions came back to bite him in the ass.

IMO Cyrax and Sektor should be the only cyber characters. so happy that stayed with (human) Smoke. Didn't care for cyber Sub-zero. Frost from MK11 was ok.

Honestly I am not a fan of the MK1 roster...not only we have fewer characters than in MKX and MK11 but also there are some staples missing like Sonya and Jax! If they we hadn't have Johnny too, this would have been just as bad as MKD(a great game but a terrible roster)

I think Bi-Han is always destined to become Noob Saibot! Even with Liu Kang altering histories! Bi-Han will just have it happen a different way! The more things change, the more they stay the same! Look at Shang Tsung & Quan Ch. Liu made their new lives meaningless, but still became a powerful sorcerers. General Shao was no longer a Tyrant but a loyal soldier to the Queen but still "became" the Emperor!

I never believed Bi Han as a good person. Not once. Yeah he saves Serena back then in previous games (not in MK1 because the events of mythologies didn't happen as we have seen because Serena) and yes he knows right from wrong but still he still did bad things so ye was still going to the Nether realm regardless. Bi is an anti-hero character at best if people really want him to be a hero so badly! While I do believe he was an anti-hero and why I'm not bothered by his heel turn in MK1 an anti-hero can turn into a villain really quick if their true self comes out.

Honestly I like this Change, this is the First Time other than Movies that Focus to Bi-Han without the Events of Mythologies, I Understand the criticism but he’s not meant to be a Antihero Character, from the Beginning Bi-Han is the definition of a Cold Blooded Assassin with his Inevitable Downfall is Greed, Hunger for Power, and Corrupt Soul, MK1 is more of a Hard Reboot than in MK9 because the Big Difference to Bi-Han because Liu Kang tried to Reform the Lin Kuei but all it did was Postponed it’s Dark Faith and made Bi-Han more Easily Corruptable because Evil doesn’t Die it Changes Shape, Sooner or Later He will embrace his Darker Path the Real Question is how will be Sub-Zero one Bi-Han becomes Noob Saibot and the Cyber Lin Kuei begins with Sektor’s Madness.

Bi-Han was never power hungry before this game though. There is literally zero evidence of Bi-Han being greedy before this game. His motivation in Mythologies & was his loyalty to the clan but when he finds out his soul is corrupted he plans escape as seen in his MK1 ending, which may not be canon but ending have always been used to uncover a character’s motivations. Bi-Han was taken as a child to be an assassin, the life of violence was all he knew. He wasn’t inherently evil like this fanbase & Dominic tries to make him out to be.

I think it'll be smoke who falls off and become Noob smoke like in the deception era. I think smoke getting caught between scorpion and sub zero could push him over. This could also see Quai Liang go full hell scorpion, not too sure on that one though

The original Bi Han was more interesting as a character but i like this one. I think there is a lot they can do with the character. I personally do not think he'll become Noob Saibot in this timeline. I think he'll become Cyber Subzero and Hanzo is gonna be Noob.

I’m not gonna lie, the sub-zero community makes me feel ashamed to be a fan and this is why I often keep it to myself because too many of them act like gatekeeping extremists and elitists that will not listen to another perspective of any kind unless it’s in support of Sub-Zero (especially Bi-Han)

What I don’t understand about you is why go under every comment section complaining about the character instead of just ignoring it. I can agree that Sub-Zero fans can be annoying (like seeing them blame Ed Boon for Bi-Han’s writing when Boon has never been responsible for the writing is annoying) but the MK fanbase is insufferable for the most part. Also, Mythologies is the ONLY game where Bi-Han’s personality is fleshed out so of course people are going to talk about it. I never understood this complaint. Its like if people got angry at Kung Jin fans because they kept bringing up MKX, of course they’ll bring it up its the only game he’s been in.

Sub zero is my favorite character, he still is, i'll still play him because he's fun in this game, but lorewise, this character sucks man, even though i would have preferred for him not to be evil, i was all for it before the game released, i was just scared because NRS has never made a good villain that's not the main one, and for no one's surprise this was no exception, Bi-Han is just dumb in this game, why would he Ally with people he just beat? Why would he think they can beat Liu Kang? And let's not even talk about the fact both him and Scorpion get beaten by random soldiers AFTER DEFEATING THE DEADLY ALLIANCE, that chapter is just bad writing and NRS having no idea how to make a side villain. I have a bit of hope for his intro dialogues since they give a bit more character and looks like he was betrayed at some point by the evil guys. They have Sareena in the game, they have the chance to explore upon that and make her this time the one that makes him come to sense, if he just keeps being an ass who gets killed and turns into noob that would just solidify the spot he already has as the worst iteration of Sub Zero ever.

The worst part about his turn is that he betrays Liu Kang & Earthrealm because he feels as though he’s just second fiddle… just to go play second fiddle & put his trust in people he’s never met & people who were his enemies.
