We cling to what we are familiar with, as it's easier to deal with in the immediate future. A life without that pain is scary to john, so he continues to perpetuate it. And so, he has confused indulgence with release. Ultimately, nobody can save him. Thing is, the same is true for anyone. Only you can save you.
