Funny story, a game shop down town Toronto had like 50 boxes of MK4 for GBC. They even displayed it in the shape of a number "4". Every time I visited the shop it made me chuckle since that display of MK4's was there till the store closed. It was there for 5 years and not one copy sold.

That Deadly Alliance port was actually pretty ambitious. I respect the attempt.

wtf man, Mortal Kombat 4 on Gameboy Color was my childhood. I loved the sprites and it's 1 song that looped over and over. Btw, about the fatalities, do you seriously not see the effort that's been put into them? The devs of this game have obviously poured their heart into that game. It's people like you that disgust me and wish that youtubers would stop talking crap about my childhood games and actually discuss terrible games like Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey. Smh It's sarcasm for the 5 ppl out there who don't get it.

For some reason, I was expecting a Mortal Kombat game on the Game and Watch. I don't know in what universe that is possible, but I'm glad it's not this one.

I remember getting MK4 on my GBC. There weren't many games for it at the time, and I wanted to see how colorful these games were going to be. Imagine my disappointment when I learned the fatalities were "greyscale." Hell, they looked like animation made with the GameBoy Camera. I was so relieved when I learned that they also colorized and re-released _Link's Awakening._ That game is great.

I actually really like the visual style of the Deadly Alliance port. Has any other game done that kind of reverse 2.5D style, where sprites act on a 3D plane? It honestly looked like a scene from a late 90s Disney flick, where the hand drawn animation acted on a cgi plane

A few years ago, I found myself amazed that I could carry a device in my pocket that could play GTA Vice City. Now we have reached a point where games like Skyrim have become portable. Amazing how far we've come since the days super stripped down Game Boy ports.

YES back in the day (2002/2003) MK Deadly Alliance on GBA was a big dal. Everybody was playing Super Mario Advanced 2 or Pokemon Ruby, (and getting hyped for the new Remakes of Gen1).. if you werent playing Mario or Pokemon on any gameboy you were a loser/hater... BUT this changed with MKDA and TE... at the time having a 3D fighting game on a handled was big deal... I dont think even Tekken had a truly 3D port on GBA...This MK was a trip at the time... and yes, I remember the palette swaps being "costumes” but we loved them. I particularly remember the classic 80's costume with brighter tones of orange, pink and yellow lol

I grew up with MKI&II on GBC, as a combo pack. I do remember playing II significantly more than I, but once you got used to the input lag the controls weren't nearly as bad as the video implied. Also, playing as Goro involved more than just winning the game. You had to finish the whole game with any fighter, then wait for the credits and the words "The End" to appear. Simultaneously press and hold [Up] + [Left], Select and [A] until the Title screen appears. Release all buttons, and press Start. Then the "Goro lives as you" screen would appear and you'd play as him. He was laughably overpowered and broken, but that was the fun of it. I'm sure that's all just rose tint, but I really liked both games as a kid, even though I was significantly worse than II, objectively speaking.

This is my favorite videos on the internet. I'm not even a big MK guy but hearing the waves of disappointment then optimism as you go through the games, concluding with your description of MK4's Game Boy Color version, it's cathartic to watch, I think gaming now has problems but yeah, shovelware used to be a much bigger beast then. Now, it's bootleg ads for bootleg Among Us that's taking the world by storm.

To me, if I have to choose a best Nintendo hand-held Mortal Kombat of the ones you reviewed, I'd go with either Mortal Komnbat II, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance or Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition. I will say that I like the music tracks from Game Boy Mortal Kombat 1, which is why I rank it higher than Mortal Kombat Advance & especially Mortal Kombat 3. Want a really awesome Nintendo hand-held 2D Mortal Kombat? Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the Nintendo DS is the way to go.

Some times you sound like the gaming youtube version of Byakuya Togami when you bash a game and I'm all for that, it's amazing.

I remember being so excited to find Mortal Kombat 4 at an Ames store as a kid. That excitement quickly faded once I put the game into my Game Boy Color and began playing it.

With MK on GB you have to tap the motions really slow and they will work every time. It's all about the timing. Trying to do this on an emulator may be harder as the controller you are using may not be simulating the GB controls very well.

I used to have the physical cart. I don't remember it being anywhere near this slow, but maybe I'm thinking of one of the later MK games on GB.

Honestly, as a kid being able to bring a competent copy of MK2 wherever you went was amazing. I have very fond memories of playing MK2 on GameBoy while my dad brought me to his softball games, I remember once a bunch of other kids at the game crowded me to watch me beat Shao Kahn.

This video feels like a calmer, cleaner AVGN episode. The tone of the rants and even some of the choice of phrases are very AVGN. Not totally a bad thing, but noticable
