Y'know, it looks like Cage's irreverence serves a purpose. Think about it; he's not the trained from birth warrior, military, or Chosen One. (He knew he was supposed to be the "funny sidekick" and Liu Kang was "the hero," but then MK9...) He was probably the only straight guy who did musical theater, and started training because he was tired of being stuffed into lockers. Hell, he only signed on thinking it was going to shut up some tabloids, and ended up in over his head. As a result, he's kinda out of his league. Cracking jokes and insightful sarcasm rattles his opponents, gets them to focus on the words instead of his ability. His style (including the Shadow kick) is all about misdirection and obfuscation, getting underestimated. Basically, he's that universe's answer to Harry Dresden.
