I've also finished the game actually at around 3-4am because I didn't want to leave the game on a cliffhanger and having to wait. The game overall is really great and albeit there are some issues, in particular, with the fonts/readability and the confusing ending..overall it was a great experience. The price point for it was also extremely good (it's a steal at 14$) for 25-30hours of content. I hope this game sells well, because I would love more games from this developer. Thanks for the review Mort!

The game itself is set to improve as the devaloper soaks in the feedback bestowed upon him by customers, so I can only recommend it more as time goes on, as any issues are ironed out.(i.e. in 1-3 weeks after one-two patches; the first patch may even be today). Regarding the ending, I would agree that it came on a little sudden and juxtaoposed a little with what came before it. But, there were many times throughout the text were subtle hints were dropped and one overt one that the ending would likely take this turn. I won't spoil anything in the comments here, but I assure you they are there. But yeah, it's a nice game. He did rather well considering he developed it solo.

We need more modern games with Commodore 64 aesthetics, the C64 was so unique and iconic, there's nothing quite like it and with a talented artist that knows how to work within the parameters of that style it can be striking and outstandingly memorable, as seen here in Skald.

I see people br3inging up Ultima as a spiritual predecessor but I see alot more of the SSI Gold Box Games at play here like Pools of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds.. Looks like alot of fun and what a great time to be alive when we can replay games made in the spirit of those old games so many of us grew up with.

There’s so much about this game to love. I just hit my 100% tonight and I’m over the moon with it. I fell in love with the world, the lore, and the characters (Roland especially). I want Skald to become an indie franchise and if we can’t have that, I at least desperately crave a spiritual successor from the devs. Great breakdown of the game on your part.

Just picked this up and am having a blast! I do like that any text in green during dialogue or even in the menu is clickable and opens up definition pages for all the terms, even going so far as having new links inside those dialogue boxes in some instances. It really helped me in understanding what a lot of feats did outright.

Good Lovecraftian games are few and far between, I'll take what I can get. I have a dream that Larian will make a Call of Cthulhu CRPG, one day folks, one day.
@imALazyPanda
@imALazyPanda 2 ай бұрын
You and I share the same dream. A call of cthulu crpg that focuses on deep decision trees and very minimal combat. This i why I think larian would do better even though personally I have more fun with owlcat crpgs(jank and all). I'm praying for larian to do CoC or my absolute pipe dream would be Rippers, think bloodborne style monster hunting crpg with exceptionally brutal and fast combat like CoC where combat is to generally be avoided unless there are no choices.

If you haven't played Sunless Seas I recommend it. It's more a humorous take on cosmic horror but addictive AF once you get past the slow hard start. Been around a few years so prob can be picked up cheap. The sequel Sunless skies is great too but maybe not a classic like SS.

@@imALazyPanda I think that the lack of emphasis on combat is what puts a few developers off but Larian have shown that deep dialogue trees with none combat resolutions do work but paired with a solid combat system you have a winning formula, I'll still keep hoping someone finds a way to make that pure CoC experience.

Here's a couple tips for new players: - hire a mercenary early. Having an extra character in your party will make a huge difference in early game and you can build them to fit any hole you have in your party - be careful of positioning. Never let the enemy get on both sides of your character or they'll decimate you - backstabbing. If your rogue hits an enemy from stealth, they do a backstab, but also if you have characters on both sides of the enemy. Move your rogue around a lot and go for those backstabs! Speaking if which, stealth during combat is much more useful than stealth deploy! - find a vendor with cheap arrows and stock up your ranger! Those guys can do insane damage but they burn arrows which can get expensive. Better to have a stock of cheap crappy arrows than no arrows at all - don't be stingy with mana. It's pretty easy to recover in this game with potions and food. You'll find and cook way more good than you'll use so you can rest pretty often. It also refills during level ups - save your level up for combat. You can level up your character in the middle of a fight, fully replenishing health and mana. If you have a level up available, go bezerk in a fight, burn your spells, take crazy risks. Once that character gets low, level them and BAM, full health and mana

I'd add a couple small complaints like some class balance, some encounters/areas being a slog (yes tower of ashes im talking about you), etc. I'd love to see something like in PoE1 and 2 where you and your companions can start out with the kind of weapons you chose for them. Found it kinda frustrating not finding the weapon type i invested feats into in the very early game.

I've been waiting for this game since before Raw Fury acquired it, years and years ago. I played the released demos across the years. I'm barely scratching the surface, because I'm very involved in a restart of Wrath of the Righteous right now. My biggest disappointment with Skald is that I was sincerely hoping this would have a 4:3 aspect support as I play most of my RPGs on my CRT equipped system, leaving the standard modern system to daily routine and my wife's gaming. This is seriously a labor of love, and scratches an itch for both my retro-RPG tendencies and my lifelong interest in HP Lovecraft's milieu. I sincerely hope this game gets some sort of DLC or sequel...

My main friction point is with the spells, having to roll a character over and over to understand what each school learns is annoying, where it says "learn 2 spells from x" i want to right click that and it gives examples. Especially because you can only get tier 2 spells at char creation if you choose the guild magos and pump all points into the school you want to check. Other then that, having a great time

Nothing is really hidden, achievement lists are always available to view well before a game releases and steam will actually let you see them. Now there are times where I don't hit embargo dates because I'm still puzzling something out, but its usually pretty easy to sort out post embargo when information sharing is readily available.

Interesting that you enjoyed the Battlemagos, when the general consensus (on the steam boards at least) seems to be that it's one of the classes that's just a straight downgrade compared to another class (the Guildmagos in this case), if not the worst class in the game. Namely due to giving up many of the best spells a Magos can get in exchange for very minor combat capability, that ultimately amounts to so little that you should still basically always stay back. You get worse combat bonuses than all the fighting classes, no multi-attack and would have to invest in both Str and Int, dragging your magic down as well. Heck, you're basically a worse combatant than the Thief (without Backstab to make up for it). The divine hybrid classes perform notably better and Ranger is so good it borders on OP (combat bonuses almost on par with the fighting classes, multi-attack AND free attacks, as well as its own magic school which borrows from arcane and divine as well as having its own unique spells and goes to tier 3). Can you shed any insight into what you specced that made you feel like your Battlemagos performed well compared to your other characters/companions? Maybe there's a build everyone just missed here.

Ok I'm loving the game but how do you destroy the mole burrows? I can see them, but when I use a shovel on them all it says is I find nothing. It's driving me insane.

What classes are everyone playing or planning to play? I’ve been stuck in indecision!

I just wish the graphics were a bit cleaner. Can't tell what I'm loking at it.

I want to try this but boy does the UI at 23:00 look horrible. Just a total mess visually.

Totally agree. While I'm okay with pixel art this game at stages looks like a complete mishmash of pixels clumped together. I truly don't know if my tied old eyes can handle it.

Retro inspired is fine, no need to slavishly copy bad ancient UI :/
