It's the epitome of pretentious writers thinking they are being extraordinarily clever but they just end up writing nonsensical garbage that is so stilted that it utterly ruins any immersion or even sympathy for the characters because no real human talks like that.

Interesting detail- at 3:20 you can see the lighthouse light is using a Lens Rotation method that requires a mercury bath as seen by the float and basin. A lot of lighthouse keepers went mad due to mercury poisoning as it was not known that it had so many adverse health affects.

Once I met a girl for a first date. She was beautiful and had an amazing smile. We had gone on a hike and there was a spot in a clearing where we sat on a blanket to eat. She looks at me with affection and says softly, “I want to share something with you.” She then pulled a script she had been working on out of her bag about a model trying to make it in New York. It was violently terrible. I was trapped.

"You're unemployed and bored." "Stop saying I'm unemployed!" That really hits home in 2020.

Morty got some of the funniest lines in this episode. Between this whole scene and his "holy shit dad shut the f**k up!" I was floored.

This guy is just the worst. He gives them a deal, they follow up on the deal inherently, he asks morty for constructive criticism, morty gives him it in the most polite way possible, then he gets salty and tells him to get out, even judging him as a person simply for giving him what he asked for.

*Author clears throat* "Fade in, exterior, unnamed city, day, the hustle and bustle is the symphony of progress..." Morty was thinking "N*gga what??"

As an aspiring writer, I can tell you with absolute certainty that reading a script is *BORING*. You're not supposed to read it, you're supposed to see it. If it was meant to be read, make it a novel. Some stories need to be visualized. Others don't.

I like to imagine that even though there are "an infinite number of realities" that in every single possible version of this encounter there was just nothing Morty could have said or done that would have ultimately resulted in a different outcome. Like, imagine that this scene is groundhog's day. Morty could repeat this moment over and over again but no matter how he tries to go about complimenting, criticizing, insulting, ect this fucking guy would have taken it the wrong way and freaked the fuck out.

As a teen writer myself, this is the EXACT the type of writer I don't wanna be.

Sad thing is, a lot of people are like that on places like Deviantart and various fanfiction sites; so unused to even the slightest bit of criticism that they'll snap even after directly requesting some commentary.

When he was telling his tale I bet you envisioned the characters in the story as humans despite the fact that he is a cat-person and doesn't know life outside his planet exists so those characters in the story must also be cat-people

"I feel like, you know, we should start our stories where they begin, not start them when they get interesting." That's words of wisdom, guys. The kind of words so many screenwriters should live by.

Love this scene. In my experience, most people who want feedback on their writing don't want criticism, even if it's constructive. They really just want to be told they did a good job.

Mediocre writers are the worst. They ask for your notes and constructive criticism and when you give your honest opinion then they throw a big tantrum. When the lighthouse keeper says "You're a petty person and you're insecure." I think he was referring to himself. He knows that his writing is terrible but refuses to admit it.

I watch this almost every day. The look on Morty's face after the cat says "3 weeks earlier" is brilliant

I learned a lot about criticism when I was in a creative writing class with my university. Because I knew the people I was working with helped a lot and I trusted them to be honest with me. The best thing to remember is that whenever your work is criticised it's coming from a good place - even if the work is very sub par. I like to think my work has become a lot better because I've overcome that obstacle of fearing criticism.

What I like best is how Morty critiques the most benign part about the “tale” that could easily be cut out and not change a thing, and that’s the thing the guy flips out over. Kind of feels like he just wanted to get upset over any critique because of the purge thing.

Speaking as someone who is trying to write his first screenplay right now (and still learning as he goes along): One of the biggest problems with this guy's script is he is trying to include things the audience can't 'see.' Lines like 'hot but doesn't know it' and 'she's a woman, he's a man,' aside from being terrible cliches, belong in a bad novel, not a blueprint for a purely visual medium. "You didn't laugh at the scene in the bar" hit home for me, though. I've had that problem before too, where I wondered why the person I gave the pages to didn't laugh. The problem there is "the scene in the bar" is only funny in the cat-man's head, but it's a great example of how he refuses to let go of his own ego. Anyway, TLDR; there are too many reasons this scene is brilliant (and cautionary.)

I always wondered if the inability to handle criticism had anything to do with the whole Purge society thing. If you can't plan to kill anybody who pisses you off you'd probably develop a thicker skin, and this show isn't the kind to indulge in unconnected randomness.

Listen I’m a writer and I’ve had my share of criticism and honestly it’s a part of the job. Don’t like it? Don’t write. The only criticism I don’t like is the one that doesn’t help. It’s one thing for someone to say you need to work on pacing or all your characters are flat, and another entirely for someone to tell you “I don’t know, I just think it’s boring.”

When I used to write, I always shat myself at the prospect that I might be like that guy.

Kind of reminds of Butterscotch Horseman’s fate. He wrote a book, someone didn’t like it so he challenged them to a duel only to ask in the end if they ever read the damn thing but asking that while walking he tripped and bashed his head on a rock.

Well, flashbacks and time jumps can make a story very interesting, but you gotta know how to use it

I’ve been in writing classes. It’s tough when someone brings in something that’s unsalvageably bad. Nobody wants to be the one to tell someone that their thing is hacky and riddled with cliches. Morty did the best he could, offering what was basically a mild note on structure. I kind of want to hear what he would have said next lol

The "this is NOT her day" part is what really gets me. He put it intentionally so that it gives the scene more style, knowing that it doesn't translate to anything visually and therefore shouldn't be in a screenplay. And he not only puts it, but actually relies on it for the effect he wants, instead of trying to make his writing more engaging and adding depth to it, and as a result he wrote the most monotone sentences that a human could ever create where it's actually possible to make it into a real scene. It's like a sliver of what the scene should feel like, that was rejected from the scene itself. Having said that, I can only pity the director that would transform it into a film, if that could actually happen, since he should make it as he read, as monotone as possible, but he also has the original feel that it should have, diluted out like it's an impurity. That sentence on its own is a sin worthy of 1000 death rows. Justin Roiland is just incredible at making something sound bad, a true malefic genius. And thank you Morty.
