I bought a 1944 M44, all numbers matching, complete with bayonet, strap, and tool kit for $125 about 25 years ago. Love the gun!

Why did I have to watch this at work? Now I need to wait until I get home to check what might be my "M38".😅

Nice job on the video Big Sam… I came across an M-38 at a show around 2 months ago… and quickly bought it. - It’s a ‘43 Izhevsk, pretty rough, clearly not refurbished and has no import markings. The stock has many dings and dents… but has fast become one of my favorites of my collection. Nice shooter and not counterbored. Got lucky on the guess at the beginning of the video… strictly based on the color of the stock!👍

Thanks. Found out my brush/hog gun is a M91/59 rifle : 9130 rifle cut down to M38 Spec. No bayonet cut out on the stock. Mine is dated 1937 and stamped 1891/59. There is a symbol on it of what looks like a hammer and sickle surrounded by a wreath. No screws on the "escuchions". Rear Sight does have the grinding marks past 1000 meters. The sight readings have been ground off. Rear sight is staked to the top of the barrel. It

Great job on an very informative video. I have been a collector for quite a long time and luckily picked up most of my collection when everything was very reasonable to down right cheap. I got two Chinese M53 ( The M38/M44 type "gift" to China from Russia tooling) rifles- a 1956 and 1954 that were battlefield pick ups. I wanted to keep them in pick up condition except for a good inspection/cleaning of the bolt/chamber.barrel. The only things I did on the 54 was change the rear sight with one screw to a peep sight and a reversible trigger job- just a shim added for better feel. That makes it a really great shooter . Naturally I can restore the sight in a minute. Both all matching with black painted chu wood on the 54 and folding bayonet. Shim on the 56 but that is all. It was for my Marine son.The bolts were really nice and slick for a Mosin. They are easy to carry, reliable that breath some serious fireballs from the 54R round!! Love them - all for 100 single bananas!! Thee M38/M44s are great but dont overlook this variant if you can find one in good shape! Keep collecting my friends!!

I don't know what it is about Mosin Nagants, but I love them. I have an M38 (pretty vanilla but it's in an M38 stock). I also have a couple Chinese M44s and man they're smooth. Great rifles. My Mosins, more than any of my other rifles, give me a sense of reliability. Maybe its just my perception but I am confident they will always work. I'm glad I bought them a few year ago, I waited on the K31, and I paid for it (bought it last year).

I like restoring the sporterized ones. Salvage all the things off of it I can and replace everything else with original parts off of other guns or just spare parts

I cut my stock down to look modern (still 21 inch barrel), it looks like the first one without the bands and excess stock. The reason for this is I hunt with this rifle, and I made it easier to carry, its lighter etc. I already have a collectors one

I'm going to wager that the real M38 is the 3rd one from left.. The dark stock looks very much like mine. I like the old carbine quite a bit. Hasn't been counter bored and still shoots very true.

M38's were also not desired by Finish troops due to the fact that you can not fit a boynet on the Crabine.
