I tested the next ”Terästetty Moskvits Elite” in 1972. First I had difficulties to get the “sporty” gear selector to reverse. The car sales man pulled the lever forcibly to reverse with rwo hands. There was terrible crunching noise when he did it. Then i was driving it forward for few hundred meters and there was steep turn right ahead. I tried to brake the car but nothing happened. I screamed that brakes don’t work! Salesman shout that they do work, just kick the pedal with force. His face was horrified and when I pushed the pedal with all my forces, the brakes started work and the car stopped awfully suddntly. Then I was turning to the right and I was screaming that the car falls down! I didn’t want to test drive more this “Steeled New Moskvitsh Elite” and drove back. After that my dad’s 1971 Saab 99 felt really good to drive.

Agreed, if you driving fathers SAAB before, then if you go to buy these car, it seems like horrible in handling, there's no arguing that. We never going to compare apples and oranges 🍎vs🍊. You're just not used to cars like this but seller obviously do. It's like always guys confront which car better SAAB vs Volvo. And a lot of them eventually agreed that Volvo more better... And approvement for it we can't or hardly find SAAB or Moskvitsh now. These cars can't survive without carefully owners. New parts for Volvo available, but hardly for SAAB. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Oh my god, AZLK 408's and early 412's brakes vere pretty known pieces of... of pieces in Soviet Union, idk why but as very young Russian I feel like if it was my own fault😅 Oh, and the gearbox, it was made in Ufa city specially for this engine and car model, and it was just the worst. The selection was slow and always way more "unclear" than on any Soviet car. Brakes were modified in late 1970's, every modification came earlier to Iž Moskviches, but the gearbox never was upgraded, isn't it funny You might only imagine how greatly felt VAZ 2101 Žigulí, the very first Lada, which was a licensed copy of FIAT-124 for sure, for Soviet drivers who used to drive in a way you described on daily before. Sadly, when Moskvich finally designed a good car, 2141, known as Aleko in foreign countries, it was too late. The design bureau had no resources to build a new motor for their new car to effectively compete with new Lada Samara, old Opels and Toyotas when people got an opportunity to afford 'em instead of... those creepy Soviet thingies. AZLK tried to fit in there Lada motors, their own old motor and even Renault's motor, but disappeared in nowhere in 2001 with all of the hardcore cringe they invented in their last years. Iž was selling the same car to Finland since 1968 up to 2001 - pickups 2715 and 27151 for sure, and became defunct on their last model, 2126 Oda, in 2006. I was happy to see some of these pokemons in Europe nowadays, they are just so pathetic and rare that it makes them kinda cute. I think that Iž 21251 Kombi is the cutest, but sadly one of the rarest Moskvich cars in Europe.

Moskwitch ( "Moscovian") 408 was ok car for its time (1965). Of course, with some 'old time features'. Air intake was filtered through an oil pan, watercooling was not designed for antifreeze. My father had it until 1980, I do not remember any bigger fail. Of course it was rather noisy inside (drive shaft went to resonance somewhere in 80 km/hour - usual feature for very many Moskwich models, with typical sound phenomenon) and the steering joints (made of hard plast) wore out quickly. But one could comfortably lay down all the leather seats in order to overnight in the saloon - we had some nice excursions to the nature.. Later on, we had model 2140 instead, which was a real nightmare. It was an exemplar for export (maybe to Finland?), but had been sent back due to a paint defect on the boot and loose attachment of the car radio (but on the other hand, it had some "rare" extras: headlight cleaning system and rear window heating). We had to wait for the "coupong of purchase" almost 3 years. Therefore , the used cars in the Soviet Union cost more than the new ones - one could acquire the new car only through the trade unions (waiting in the queue for the coupong in order to go to the car shop), but there was almost always somebody with privileges (e.g. some former soldiers from the World War II, but in fact - regarded as agressors by the native Estonian people) could come and take the advantage without the queue .... But this 2140 was really awful: + one could not drive through a 1 feet deep water because the ignition coil was located deep in the bottom of the hood, the engine stopped immediately (there was a street in our town where all these cars 'took a break' when it rained ) + on sunny days, when the outer temperature was over 25 degrees of Celsius, the starter relay got stuck (one had to tap it with the hammer on the right place in order to loosen it and start the engine, therefore, I had always a hammer in the toolbox, usually it occurred on parking lot, with hot engine, after shopping); but when the temperature was over 30 degrees, it did not help either. Then one had to unscrew the registration plate and start the engine with a special crank which came with the purchase of the car. + in heavy rains the car horn went on and then it made constant beeping in the street or highway (of course, all the pedestrians and other car drivers were very careful during this). Luckily, it happened only twice for us. + .one day after ca 5 months of purchase the turn signals no longer functioned. I tried to find the error myself, because there was a risk in a car repair shop that they could change our car's new details to the older ones (there was always shortage of spare parts in the USSR and this was an extra business for the car mechanics - they used to sell the newer details from a customer's car as new spare parts to the next customer with an older car). It turned out that the box of electronics was located just below the shaft of the radio antenna and it was filled with water. I took it apart, dried it and it worked again. Of course, I had to fix also the leakage through the antenna. + one nice day the gas pedal came off from the welding + keylock in the driver's door got loose (went around and around, could barely unlock the door before repair) + the boot was not airtight. One had to cover all the belongings with a dustproof blanket before driving on dusty roads. + front wheels had incorrect tilt (revealed as uneven tire wear), I had to adjust it by myself, I bought a special book and got it fixed. + one day the steering wheel got loose, had to fix it before it could separate entirely + we did not drive the car in winter, every year, after ca 3 months of standing in the garage the clutch got stuck (I believe it is a feature of many cars, not a specific issue) But I do not remember any more issues. :) Of course, we had to replace the plastic of steering joints regularly, as usual (dismantling with a hammer, of course). Maybe this export car was created on Monday. The engine (the same as in model 412) is quite good - in collaboration with French engineers from Renault (likewise the color-TV was modified French SECAM during the soviet era). I was not lucky enough to drive a Lada (which is modified Fiat), my parents worked as a teacher and a nurse, their trade unions had not so many coupongs for Lada. One could buy a new 'used one' but my father preferred to build a house instead (these new Ladas were very expensive in the aftermarket, indeed) Later in my life I have owned brand new Toyota and BMW. The latter left me on the road in a foreign Scandinavian land, after 15 00 km of mileage (jamming of EGR valve). I had no problem with 20 year old Toyota. Do I miss the Moskwitch? No way! Have a nice day - and cheers! :)

@@raineruibo2203 In the second half of the 60s, almost all famous car manufacturers achieved their perfectness, but after they just "improved" them. Improved I mean in big quotes. Just as example Volvo Amazon from 60s more better than Amazon 1970. And I eaven don't want to compare 140 series from 60s with the next models since 1970. Latest good passenger cars Volvo stays in 60s. But one exception! Toyota gradually improved products. And today best choice it's a big Toyota if you looking for a good car of course made in Japan ONLY. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
