Being one of the most popular aquarium plants, moss is easy to grow, hardy, and can be used in a number of ways throughout your scapes. The moss we use in our tanks naturally grows on forest floors, tree trunks and along river banks. Aquatic moss grows in an irregular pattern of stems covered in tiny leaves. These mosses are great plants to include in low-light aquariums holding small tropical freshwater fish or shrimp. It is one of the easier plants to grow, can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, and will happily grow in just about any substrate or attach itself to any surface. This stuff is almost impossible to harm!
An interesting thing about moss is that it doesn’t have roots. They have these sticky little “feet” called rhizoids that grab onto surfaces and allow it to propogate. Moss only uses the rhizoids to anchor itself in place, but not to eat. It absorba water and nutrients directly through the stems and leaves, not the rhizoids. This means you can stick Java moss almost anywhere in a tank and it can grow there. You don’t have to worry about root growth or having it down in the substrate.
It’s no wonder why it’s one of the most popular aquatic plants used for aquascaping!
In this video, you’ll learn how to provide the right conditions so it’ll thrive and the different ways you can use it in your tank. Besides a wonderful tool for aquascaping, it has many other benefits such as providing protection for eggs and fry, improving tank health and providing food for breeding fish. Moss provides a natural, aging look and can give life to a bare and plain tank.
As well as aquatic mosses like Java Moss, Christmas Moss and Flame Moss, I will be covering Süsswassertang care in this video guide. Subwassertang (Süsswassertang) doesn’t need much attention and care, at all. Some aquarists do not even bother to properly plant or attach it to anything. They just throw it in the tank. Süsswassertang will find a spot it likes and grows.
Süsswassertang is a perfect choice for shrimp tanks and low-tech planted tanks as it does not require high lighting or much fertilization. Most of the needed care is centered on carrying out routine partial water changes in order to balance the water parameters and maintain good water quality. Pruning is only required after a long while, as Süsswassertang is a very slow-growing plant. When the clumps are getting too dense or growing out of shape, you should prune it to keep it compact. Süsswassertang is an amazing plant for a shrimp tank. The surface area the plant provides is greater than any other moss out there.
The correct spelling for Subwassertang is Süsswassertang and is pronounced as Susswassertang. A rare plant in the hobby, Süsswassertang is great for all aquariums.
The name Süsswassertang means “freshwater seaweed” in German, and is not a true aquatic moss. Often confused with Pellia, the Süsswassertang has a translucent green leaf and feels like seaweed. The leaves grow in a nice stratified pattern once established on hardscape. You can simply place Süsswassertang in the bottom of the tank or tie it to a driftwood/rock and watch it grow. Grows both in low and high light.
Süsswassertang is not a real moss and will never attach itself to wood or rock completely, it is a fern that thrives in the low light conditions. Then tied to wood it propagates itself by simply growing the clump larger.

Nice video! I do find that the closer to the light some mosses grow, they can turn brown on top, always fine tune the height of the lights if moss turns brown😊 also for the moss that grows in thick, I do clean it by “fluffing” it so the Center or base doesn’t rot.

Just an imbalance in the tank. Have you tried floaters to help soak up the extra nutrients? They also help block some light so you get less algae growth combining the two. You could also try peroxide spot treatment on the moss to kill the algae, just some ideas.

If I had fish, I could for sure skip feedings and they'd be good to munch on the microfauna. I only keep shrimp tanks currently and they definitely don't need to be fed very often regardless.

well done man, one day i will figure out how to get some of that cool microfauna as well, for now i only have the very thin detritus worms and the fat worms that go fast but are very short, which I am not sure anyone is eating @@BobMossNanoTanks

You can blame us for not hitting 1,000 subs. You can also take credit for all my shrimp breeding. Sense watching your videos. I have 4 breeds of neocaridina breeding, and just noticed this weekend. I have my red pinto fishbone caridina having babies. I want to get some suswassertang for my tanks. I have moss in all my tanks, and the shrimp love it.

@@BobMossNanoTanks I have a ton of Christmas moss. I took some cholla wood, split in half, and poked Christmas moss in the holes. It looks really cool. I also took some cholla and laid it up on the back wall of the tank. It looks little bushes. It gives them a tunnel to go feed. In some of my tanks I have balls of java moss too.

Is subwassertang slow growing? Will it benefit from CO2 or it will grow the same rate without injecting CO2? Thanks.

Moss is the best!!! You have any pilo moss? I’m in buffalo, but I would send you some. It grows green and strong in hard water. I bought it from Mark Shelly Aquatics. It grows like a weed. It’s amazing. If you know I can mail it from U.S. to Canada I’ll send ya a hunk to check it out. It’s greener than Java but doesn’t have the fanning out trait like Java. But it’s great!!! Let me know I’ll hooks it up.
