Something that has been flooding the plant world in the last 18 months is using Moss Poles as a support mechanism for various houseplants. The idea behind the moss pole is to provide your climbing houseplants something to climb up.
Monstera deliciosa is one of the most popular indoor plants that can be successfully grown using a moss pole. Other favorites include Philodendron Pink Princess, Peru Monstera, Min Monstera, and tons of other Aroids.
These plants naturally climb in the wild and by giving them something to climb up you are giving them an environment more closely related to what they want, and as such they will often produce larger leaves in the process.
I have used both bamboo stakes and moss poles with Monstera deliciosa and have concluded that I prefer to use the Moss Pole because it creates a cleaner appearance in the home.

FYI, with the setup shown in the video, all the tension of the string is concentrated at one spot on each petiole/stem - over time it might cut into the plant. Wider garden velcro would help spread out the force. Or multiple loops around each petiole/stem that is being re-positioned.

I like to use the green plastic, non sticky, “tape” so I can spread the pressure on the branches out and prevent digging into the flesh.

I love how much you emphasize to wrap around pool first then monstera because I think that was my biggest issue that kept leading to failure, can’t wait to try your way and see how it goes!

This is exactly the info I needed. I made a moss pole that looks a lot like the one in the video, but I have not had any success in 'getting her on the pole' because I for sure thought it was going to hurt her stems. About to reinstall it off-center and twine her to it. New sub for sure 👍

Omg what an heirloom! You can definitely use kitchen twine as long as it’s thick and won’t cut into the stems over time

Nice video. If you have a local garden shop 'boutique' that sells monstera, they most likely sell moss poles. My local shop makes their own. I was told that some people like to spray the moss with water because the moisture encourages the plant to grow tall (up the pole).

Great info! Exactly what I was looking for. I have a beautiful small monstera plant that is rapidly growing. It has 3 fenestrated leaves and just pushed out the biggest one yet. I have an 18 in moss pole for her that I got on etsy.

Thanks for your kind words :) yes you absolutely can, just be aware that after a few seasons it may begin to rot and lose its ability to maintain the plant. rot won't cause any damage, you'll just need to change out for a new branch

I REALLY need to buy, or make, my moss poles with that netting around it. It looks so much cleaner and easier to work with! Without it, they shed the moss EVERYWHERE! ( especially if you don't keep it moist enough😬😁) It also seems like it would be easier to attach an extension to it if you needed to! Yours looks great!

haha yeah im getting close to needing an extension, its true! i also find that simply the dowel rod is a pretty good alternative without moss. as of yet ive had no roots take hold in the moss.

Do you secure the moss poll to the pot with something, so it doesn't move and wobble under the plant weight and cause the whole plant to fall on the side?

once you water the plant in and it starts to build some roots it helps stabilize the pole. ive never had any issues with any of my poles falling

So where did you find a moss pole. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen one for sale. I would think the string would cut into your plant. I would use a small rectangle piece of leather with holes on each end and tie the string in the holes to the pole. Give the plant more of a surface area where the string couldn’t cut into the stalk.

I found it at a local nursery actually. And it’s true if you don’t move the string around it can eventually cut into the stems. I have started opting for tape lately. But I love you method!

How do you keep the weight of the plant from pulling the Moss pole over sideways? That's what always happens to me.

Perhaps you need a deeper pot. The pole should be pushed down to bottom of the pot

If you only have one, consider planting a propagation in the pot to create a second. It all depends on what you start with.

Thanks so much for this video! I’ve had a moss pole on with my monstera for a while but was confused as to why the aerial roots weren’t attaching until a friend told me they need to be tied! I noticed your plant doesn’t have many aerial roots, should I prune mine off? I have some longggg ones

If they’re getting ugly you can definitely prune them off and it won’t be a problem at all for your plant!

Noo, don't prune them, you can put them in a glas of water, and they are going to help your monstera grow more big leaves faster. :)

Rooted aerials greatly contribute to foliage size. There are consequences to removing them.

I saw someone wrap their aerials in moss and Saran wrap to keep it damp, but you have to leave the tip out in the air. I tried it with a small one minus the saran wrap; just a long strand of moss and I mist it. It looks really cool!

Since the Moss Pole should be moist, what's your advice for wetting it, INDOORS? I've been spritzing it, but there must be a better way. I have a small starter pole. Not like yours.

I’ve given up on trying to keep them moist. The aerial roots will still grow into them. I wouldn’t worry about that

You can always use watering globes. I’ve started using a plastic cup with 2 holes in the bottom and I keep it on top of the moss pole and just add water every couple days. You can also take the plants and put them in the shower. Helps with pest control also.

So you basically showed us how to tie it to a stick. For aesthetic purposes?? What is the purpose of the moss stick? Why not just use any stick? This didn’t explain much.

My apologies, I thought I clarified the reason why moss poles are used . and yes, the moss aspect is essentially just for aesthetic. You can absolutely use any stick that can provide stability and support. I never use moss after realizing it’s just a fad, I always use simple dowel rods instead

@@louisheath2791 no, naturally in the wild monsteras “climb” up trees. Their aerial roots wrap around and help them climb.

I'm so confused... why are you using a moss pole just to display the foliage? A steak of any kind would have worked and cheaper. Moss poles are meant to be an "extension" of your pot, giving climbing plants like airroids something to root into and grow up and produce bigger leaves.
