Back again with Mossberg and the Model 142k which is a bolt action, box magazine fed .22 rifle with an 18.5 inch barrel and smooth lines making an amazingly compact accurate rimfire classic. Manufactured somewhere between 1953 and 1956, this is a great example of a post war Mossberg .22 and here we take a look at it’s place in the timeline of Mossberg models and we examine it’s function and unique mechanicals including the mechanics of it’s primary extraction, feeding action from the magazine, and safety lever operation with stock removed for visibility.
That molded synthetic fold down fore end is very distinctive Mossberg, as well as the black plastic finger grooved trigger housing. Often, these get passed up on the gun store rack due to being labeled “junk” guns while nothing could be further from the truth. I seek them out, and bring them to you here. They are certainly NOT sub par quality....they aren’t made to be wall hangers either. They are solid workhorses and the extensive variety of different models works well for collecting.
Thanks for tuning in. Don’t forget......LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE!! Really appreciate it as it keeps us in the KZfaq recommended videos.....a very important thing for the 2A side of things.
Be back soon with ANOTHER Mossberg .22......just because......

I inherited this gem. I don’t know how my grandfather obtained it, but I suspect it was his WWII “National Guard training rifle”. He gave it to my father. In the late ‘60’s’ I spent hours on the floor of my parents walk in closet with the door closed, fondling it. It has a wooden fold-down fore end and I’m 100% sure it’s from the factory. At 61 years old, I’m finally gonna get to really play with it. My father preferred the K-Mart Ruger 10/22 he bought way back, so this gem stayed in the closet when we were afield. I’d all but forgotten about it, until he passed two years ago. It brought a major smile to my face when I found it in the back of his closet. It didn’t have the magazine, so I had to purchase the Triple K ones, but they appear to be spot on. I’ll find out this spring of 2024!

Nice to see you here.....love your channel. I’m looking at a Reising Target Pistol right now, trying to make a deal......if I’m not mistaken you went through the same ordeal. Not much on KZfaq on this pistol besides what you have posted.

A blast from the past! I had a number of Mossberg .22 rifles. 1st was a 144LS bolt action target model, which I used in competition. Not quite a Win 52 or Rem 40, but competitive for price. Next was a 152 semiauto, I believe, with the folding fore end. Could never get that magazine to feed reliably. Last was, I believe, a 340 series bolt action magazine rifle. All were well made, robust, and functional. They were very popular in the 1950's and 60's. The one I regret not keeping was the 144LS. The Navy was still using the 44 US Government model for training in the 1960's. My 144LS was replaced by a Remington 513T.

Those 44 models are so difficult to find complete. It’s almost like you need to find a pair of them to create a complete rifle......especially the sights.

That 142-k is in really nice condition. I have a 152 semi-auto my dad bought new just b4 the Korean war began. It too has been kept in pretty pristine shape, and is a delight to shoot. It's the model with the wooed fold=down fore-end. This one came with the adjustable peep, along with the adjustable rear, and the winged front. I once found and installed their click-detent fold-away rear peep. I have never had to replace a single part due to wear (except the sling), although I keep a spare firing pin. Love that old rifle. They truly are a thing of beauty, built to last!

Sounds like an interesting rear sight you found there. Usually the aperture sights go for more than the rifles they fit on.

Mossbergs are my favorites. That one picture of Mossberg himself looks like he was in the mafia.

That’s a first, Shep. When looking at the list of all these different Mossberg 22’s its amazing they were able to inventory all the different models and parts.

I just picked up a 142-A earlier this year. Great little gun smooth action and yes missing both safety buttons. (I did replace mine though)

Years ago before I even had one of these Mossbergs I bought a milsurp rifle at a gun show and the seller being a nice guy gave me an old dusty case to put it in which was cool, it had a carry sling on the case and everything. I remember finding a red button that looked like a game piece for some board game or puzzle or something and tossing it remembering I was glad it didn’t get caught in the rifle action. Years later I realized it was one of these Mossy safety buttons. I wonder how many old zip up rifle cases across the world have those little plastic safety buttons wedged up in the front of them.

Hopefully you see this. I just inherited a mint 142k from my great uncle that was probably shot one time. It’s still in the box and has the original sling, the safety indicator buttons you talked about, and a wooden monopod that blends into the rest of the stock. I want to use it for squirrel hunting but I’m not sure what scopes are compatible with it. From what I saw online and what appears to be on yours I would have to get a Weaver B6 scope. Do you know of any new scopes that can be put on it would will I have to pay a premium for an older one?

That’s a really rare find to have one of those in such great condition.....even with the box! Keep that box dry and safe! I’m not a scope mount expert....I kind of run whatever they come with....think I bought two scopes in my life! That groove in these Mossberg 22’s is a standard size that fits those scope mounts so if you look around you can probably use a bunch of scopes what will mount up there provided you use the right size mounts. Whatever you do, don’t scratch anything up!
