Well i see things totally different then most who have commented. I've been a rehabber for quite some time, I've raised close to 500 raccoons through the years. I myself was blessed a few years ago when my girl NAWTY {a non-releasable rescue} gave birth to 4 kits and was able to video the entire delivery. Nawty has been with me for almost 6 years and her and i have developed a bond that quite rare. She is the most loving and affectionate animal i have ever been around. I take her everywhere with me she cuddles with me watching TV, she sleeps in the bed with me. When i come home from work i open her cage and she immediately comes to crawl up on my lap. I have a large outdoor enclosure for my 6 non-releasable. they all get along with each other. about a week before Nawty gave birth She became extremely aggressive very irritable. I had constructed a birthing suite for her so it was time to isolate her from the others. When i tried to get her a move her from the others I have NEVER in my life witnessed an animal nor tried to captured one that was as extremely aggressive as she was then. she was in FULL ATTACK MODE !!!! It took 3 of us to capture her finally having to use big thick sleeping bags to throw over the top of her and wrap her up. Once in her birth suite she wanted nothing to do with me a would snarl growl and lunge at me anytime i was near. It was even worse once she gave birth. i couldn't even open the cage to clean it she would try to attack instantly. for about 2 weeks that went on then one day she went back to loving and trusting me. BUT ONLY ME.. Anyone else came within her sight she would let them know she wasn't happy. Im going to post several of those videos on my channel today i hope you all get the opportunity to watch. After all that being said and you watch my videos this is why i see things differently. The mother raccoon in your video wasnt threatened at all, in fact she felt comfortable with you being there. Which leads me to believe that you have had a lot of interaction with her prior. Biggest indicator is her ears... her ears are up.... which means she doesn't sense any danger. If she felt threatened her ears would be completely flat which is the indicator that she is in defensive mode. If you were a complete stranger to her i Guarantee you would have been in the ER getting stiches . either way its a great video and an experience that most people will never have. best wishws to all

Wow WHAT experiences you must have! Really appreciate taking the time to share. As I've said on many occasions, this should hopefully prove to be a good learning opportunity for anyone else faced with such instances of Racoons moving-in. Please feel free share any of your videos. I'm sure others would find them fascinating!

Thanku for sharing but remember she's a new mum and very protective of her new babies. If I were you I would have brought Atleast a piece of bread or anything for that matter to feed mum for a few reasons. One, being that she's a new mum and her hands are full she could have used the extra nourishment to fill her belly. Two, because you stood there for a good length of time it absolutely freaked her out (It was obvious since she started to try and move her baby) which I couldn't blame her. There is this "thing" that's 50x her size staring at her in her space and she felt not only threatened but she had no clue if you were there to harm her and or her babies. The food would have Atleast eased her mind knowing that you were not only nice by feeding her so she may have felt less threatened but also as you stood there for that log it would have occupied her a bit. Maybe I'm wrong but IMO I would have done that if I were you. I'm so happy you shared this with all of us up at the same time, I know that if I ever run into a wild animal with new babies I sure wouldn't sit there long.. Your harmless but she didn't know that. Picture if you were sleeping and a 50ft dinosaur approached you, you would freak the heck out not knowing what it wanted to do to you senility was harmless. Understand?

Hi Shannon, thanks for the comments. Completely understandable and yes I can imagine how scared she must have been for not only herself, but especially the babies. I read-up a lot and spoke to several wild animal sanctuary's about best-practices for how to proceed. The overwhelming majority was to let them co-exist if possible and eventually they would leave on their own. (Which I'm pleased to note they did). But if I started to feed her she would have probably stayed even longer. (They are very smart animals). Plus I also found-out that raccoons always have 2 - 3 different nests in the area in case one gets compromised. In the end, they moved-out on their own terms so that's good! I hope that this situation will be a resource to help others if they are faced with something similar. Again, thank you for the well thought-out comments. Much appreciated!

*ShannonIsSweet*...well said. They're talking too...which is disturbing her. Mum racoon can't move all the babies at once..people need common sense..back away & back-off of nature sometimes. Because she is stressed out.

No, the Wildlife people in my state say do not feed or water such wild animals. Some carry rabies. Also, that might make them ill, they wrote. Just Google 'wildlife agency near me', for information. I know, because I thought I had birds in my chimney. But, instead, a baby raccoon came down onto the fake logs, 2 days ago; it is about the same size of these babies. I got out my tablet to Google the word 'wildlife agency near me'. I saw its mother, about 2 months ago, in my backyard. She rapidly climbed a large, leafy tree. Her coat looked very pretty and glossy, which made me think she had a good source of food; now, I know that she was very pregnant. This is the first time I have seen a raccoon on my street; but, I have seen several opossums, over the years, in my backyard. I found one under a large, plastic planter which was turned over, several years back. Hissing loudly, it snarled, flashing those sharp little teeth; I quickly decided it could have free use of the backyard, for a month or two. I would not trespass on that fierce opossum''s privacy, at all! Also, there was a barred owl in the fireplace, one evening, about 10 years back. I got a large towel and opened the glass door and the screen and covered the owl, with the towel. I opened the back door and set the owl on a table on the patio. It flew into that big, leafy tree. I am going to leave the raccoon, alone, so her babies can survive. I put an electric light on the hearth, where the light beams up the chimney, so the raccoons can see to leave. The chimney is brick, so there is no harm that she can do to it. She built them a nest on a brick ledge. That is what I have done with the blue jays and other birds that have visited that fireplace, since 1987. This neighborhood had lots of wildlife; but, because of population growth, along with more traffic. Now, we do not see any jackrabbits, with long ears, which used to graze, here; and, I have seen just one armadillo, in the last five years. Sad. We build and drive; they die.

Great video, Jarred. Baby raccoons are so cute, and the sounds they make are wonderful. We don't have raccoons out here on the prairies (I'm in Regina) so it is always interesting to see someone's video, such as yours. Do you have opossums in Ottawa? They fascinate me as well. Too cold out here in winter for both raccoons and opossums.

Thanks Mike, I'm not sure but would think there are opossums around Ottawa? The purpose of these videos were originally to provide knowledge on what one can do when faced with a similar situation. My experience has been to just leave them alone (...as long as they are not in ones' house) and they will leave on their own accord!

It’s cute yes but you are way too close for this mamas comfort! She was contemplating moving them because of you. She’s warning you to stop and you keep on shushing her 🤦🏻‍♀️ Don’t cause her stress like that...those little ones are taking a lot of energy from her and the last thing she needs is to have to move all her babies elsewhere because you can’t respect their space. Yes they are cute but they don’t understand you mean no harm. Please people...give wildlife space if you want to show them respect and back away when they “ask” you to!!

Coon pups are used to being handled rough. Yes you were making mama feel uncomfortable and I am surprised she didn't attack. The best thing yo do if you discover this is to let it be if you don't mind the company. If not find a service that HUMANELY removes and relocates the family, not KILL them! Mama just needed a place quickly to litter.
