Most new hockey players do not actually know how to pick their own handedness. In fact, it is much more complicated than simply selecting a right handed stick if you are a righty or a left handed stick if you are a lefty. 2/3rds of NHL hockey players shoot on the left side of their body, but 85-90% of the world are right handed, why is that? We get to the bottom of these questions in this video.

This is extremely fascinating to me as I've played hockey my entire life, I'm 38 and I've never heard this, not even once. So it must be a Canadian thing to "teach" a player to play with their dominant hand on the top. Every person I know was just given a straight blade stick when they start, for the first year or two and whatever way they naturally grabbed the stick was the way that they chose to shoot. I have actually been watching a lot of videos and reading on this since I discovered this concept a few days ago and it appears that in Canada its about 70-30 left shot to right shot but in the US its about 50/50. I wonder if that is because in most cases hockey isn't introduced until older ages? Really no clue. on theory I read is that kids in Canada are given hockey sticks much earlier on average and its nature al to grab the top of the stick with your dominant hand a young age and in the US its more common for a kid to grab a bat before a hockey stick and in baseball you almost always have your dominant hand on top. This is really fascinating stuff. My 6 year old son writes and eats left handed but plays all sports except for disc golf right handed. So his dominant hand (writing hand) is on the top but he wasn't taught to do that it just happened.

Hello, Im fairly new to hockey and hope to pick it up soon. Have you ever had an issue with control, having your dominant hand down toward the center? I picked up a stick, based on what felt more natural to me, but have been seeing since then that you typically want your dominant hand at the top.

You might find it fun to grab a used stick with the opposite hand from what you usually use, just to stick-time around with occasionally to make yourself more ambidextrous, even if you never switch to the other shot side. Teaching doctrine for a long time was to ask a kid which hand was stronger and then assign that as the top hand. If you did that strictly, you would have much more that 66% of the NHL shooting left, so obviously that is not followed. Player position tends to matter more than anything else, so you would have left defense and wing shoot left, right defense and wing shoot right, center shoot right or left, but skew left for advantage to goalies blocker. This would give you the distribution of approximately 3/5 of players left, and 2/5 right, which is closer to what you see. I bat right and golf right and played for many years before I picked up a hockey stick, but I tried both right and left when I started hockey. At the beginning, I had a bit more dexterity stickhandling left but much more accuracy and power shooting right. I had to decide whether to develop puck handling deftness with a right shot, or power with the left shot. Since I didn't have much dexterity yet on either side and would have to develop that whichever side I decided on, I chose to shoot right and work on touch and feel. It came pretty quickly and I haven't regretted shooting right at all.

The great Andy Bathgate preached bottom hand control and when told that Gordie's strong hand was at the top, Bathgate said his numbers would be even greater than they are now. I'm a righty and played bottom hand dominant because it felt more natural and I had a wicked accurate wrister too. I'm not ambidextrous and shooting left felt totally weird to me.

Is it bad to train with both hands? I grew up with both handed sticks and honestly I'd just go with what I felt like. I honestly love shooting right handed and stick handling with my left. I've been getting back into hockey and have a left handed stick. Honestly, when I visualize myself it's with a right handed stick and I do miss shooting with a right handed stick but when I hold a left handed stick it feels just as natural. I was thinking using both sticks, would it not have provided an advantage in strengthening both hands? Would it help with your backhand? I play football and using both feet is such a huge advantage, I wish I practiced with both feet as a kid like I did both hands in hockey.
@pajerhockey
@pajerhockey Жыл бұрын
Very interesting thought! However, I do not think there is any advantage to training to shoot/stick handle from two different sides of the body. If there was a clear advantage, you would see NHL players using a flat curve and switching sides.

@@pajerhockey No, I mean moreso you train both handed sticks in practice but obviously you just use the one in game. Idk maybe I'm wrong but I feel like it'd help more evenly distribute the strength in your arms. Like I know in basketball they train to layup with both hands. Would learning to stick handle for instance with both hands help long-term or do you think it'd be kind of pointless or even detrimental

I haven't played much hockey at all, but when I do, it always felt natural to put my dominant hand (right) on the bottom. I think it may be because of how much golf I played when I was little, since that's how I hold a club. What confuses me is the broom/shovel test. If I'm shoveling snow or something, my right hand is on top. If that is a way of knowing how you should hold a stick, should I try that way as well? Still very new so I feel like I could switch it up.
@pajerhockey
@pajerhockey Жыл бұрын
So, the main point is that it doesn’t really matter which hand you choose. The shovel test is for when you do not have any preference, but it sounds like you feel more comfortable with the right at the bottom, which is great, try to stick with that! The key takeaway is to make sure to train whatever your top hand is on the hockey stick to be the primary driver of the hockey stick.

However I realize that the top hand should be the control hand and so I have trained my left hand at the top to do most of the control for stick handling. I also taught myself how to shoot left (as a right hander) too.

I would not worry, as the main point is that you should simply treat the top hand on the stick as the primary driver of the hockey stick. I’ve noticed that as well! I started when I was very young using my right hand at the top of the stick, but sometime during mites I switched to my left being at the top - I am right hand dominant. I'm just so confused. Maybe it's because I'm comparing this to any other sport involving a stick, club or bat. All of them, it only seems natural. That you want your strong side/hand being the one putting on the power. Because you are stronger on that side. Maybe it's also to do with the fact that I'm kind of Ambidextrous. I shoot a gun left handed and a Bow right handed. I write left handed, eat, weld and smoke left handed but I throw with my right hand. It seems counterintuitive, to setup and shoot from my left side. I couldn't imagine trying to swing a golf club or a baseball bat left handed. Which is why I am having a hard time believing that I'd be better with my left in hockey. I've played floor hockey a decent amount back in the day. And was quite good, so I'm extremely confused. I noticed this at a Redwings game yesterday when I seen a bunch of players sticks for sale and the majority of them were left handed...🤷💯

I think that is the point though! Where - there is no single good answer for what side someone should shoot on. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and just remember to use whatever hand at the top of the stick as the primary driver of the stick.

This is all wrong. The hand closest to the bottom of the stick is the hand that controls the wrist-sensitive movements of shooting and passing. The hand holding the top of the stick is the guide hand, which in all sports is your non-dominant hand. In basketball, your dominant hand is the wrist action hand, and your off hand is the guide hand. I’m right handed and although I could play and have played left handed in games as a fun challenge, my wrist shot was just trash because my left hand is not coordinated enough. Although this issue of handedness in hockey is a completely mind boggling phenomenon, I don’t think this explanation in this video explains it. I believe there are two reasons: 1) Left handed players are scouted more vigorously because most goalies are right handed and therefore a left handed shooter is open to the blocker side, similar to how left handed batters have an advantage in baseball. 2) Because of the history of left handed dominance in hockey, kids learn to play with whatever stick they can find, and generationally this got passed down inadvertently. My uncle for instance is right handed but plays left handed. This is because his father was a right handed goalie and all of his sticks had a left handed curve as goalies do, so my uncle played around with my grabdpa’s sticks as a kid and developed his hockey skills as a toddler before handedness was really established.
