Jakes Vlogs when my family couldn't afford hockey I just played street hockey, ball hockey and skated at outdoor rinks whenever I could. All you need is skates, a stick and helmet to practice and play some fun games.

I’m a u14 player, I don’t think I have ever owned a high end stick, last year I had a 42 goal season with a 50$ stick, I would eventually like a higher end stick, but is it that big of a difference?

A good way to find out which side you shoot for kids is to let them play with a flat curve stick if you can still find one anywhere. Also I played hockey with my dominant hand on top being right handed so shooting left but in baseball it is opposite and I bat right. Had I played hockey with my dominant hand on the bottom I had the impression that I would have had a better slap shot. A dominant hand on top makes only the wrist shot most natural.

Jeremy, so you're saying if I'm a dominant right handed person (writing/throwing) that I should be a lefty shooter??? That would go against everything I've learned in baseball and golf. I'm not even sure if I could mentally do that?

It's because the dominant hand plays a big role in puck control, the movement of the top hand controls the movement of the blade, so it's easier to stick handle with the dominant hand on top. It's not a rule, but very common.

I'm a right handed shooter and personally I think that it makes more sense to have your dominant hand on top its just now I have trained my left hand to do all those nasty toe drags and I feel like having your dominant hand on bottom you get more power. Also part of it might of been that my dad is a righty shot.

Jeremy I weigh 76 pounds and use a 50 flex(junior) and have no problem with flexing the stick when I shoot or stickhandling but should I still switch to a lower flex?

If you have good form and strength than that's normal. Some players like a little stiffer or more whip. If your shots feel good no need to change, but if a friend has a 40 flex try it out and see if you like it.

Steve Sowinski When did you order? In order to get low flex the 17.5 and 20 flex is a different carbon than the other sticks. We've improved the process and the new ones shouldn't bow.

Coach Jeremy I️t was ordered last December and was one standby until he needed it. I️ would say it’s had about 6-8 months of decent usage, so I️ think it’s done well. I️ was just curious since with is the first composite we have purchased. I’ll be ordering the 20 flex today or tomorrow. Thanks for the reply

Because he has the net part in the air, if he's scooping something off the ground the right hand would be on top, same if he was sweeping with a broom, or using a shovel.

Regarding flex, there needs to be a better method presented to parents that is more informative and tailored to the actual player. Sure, "half your weight" will give you a number get you a stick in your kid's hands ... but so will just pulling one off the rack ... and you don't really know any more with either method. The ability to flex a stick is effected by the player's height, the length of the stick, and the strength of the player ... you do not use your body weight to flex a stick, so why do we use it to pick a flex? It's non-sensical. A short, overweight kid that is on the weaker side needs less flex rating (more flex in the stick) than a taller, thinner kid with more strength. A fact which Jeremy alludes to as the player gets *stronger* (1:46). Parents are better off just letting the player try several sticks and pick the one they feel flexes right for them. You'll likely find 60 lbs and 100 lbs kids picking the same flex rather than getting forced into 30 and 50 flex (respectively) because of some irrelevant standard.
