Just to give you lads a wee bit of context on John and Mary. They pretend to not hate each other in front of Ted/Dougal because divorce was only legalised I think mid 90s in Ireland. Even then it was very frowned upon. Wait til you see her washing his hair lmao

When I lived in Ireland, RTE were repeating Father Ted on a continuous loop. They might still be repeating it to this day. A lot of Irish Catholics loved the show. Still, the internet never lets the truth get in the way of a good story.

I'm Irish myself from Dublin and heard that too about Irish television not picking it up because of the Catholic bashing. But both creators have come out on numerous occasions to say they don't know where that rumour started. One of the creators lived in London at the time and so approached channel 4 who picked it up. It was never offered to Irish television. Although to be fair even I heard that rumour it was around for a long time.
@Dreyno

I’ve heard those rumours as well. Absolute made up b&ll&cks. Nobody had a problem with it in Ireland when it aired. Even priests watched and enjoyed it. Sometimes I read about the time and place I grew up and wonder if the people writing about it were even there.

I'll concur yes priests (some at least) have sense of humor, priest that did my wedding obviously was a Fr Ted fan as he named his cat Fr Ted! we only knew as the cat needed to be rehomed as he was going to another place & they didn't allow pets. We agreed to adopt him! ps he was black n white too lol many yrs ago we only had him 2 or 3 yrs but sure hope he was happy. I think I introduced hubby to show as he prev didn't bother as he is atheist although maybe thinks something more now a days. He became big fan & still rewatches ep's. (I'm "non practising" raised Catholic, don't now follow religion just spiritual). ps England not Ireland

4:48 - that is a brilliant idea Daniel! I have a neighbour, who seems quite lonely, I went out of my way to be nice to him, but every time I stop to talk to him...I end up having to say 'ok, thats me off then' at LEAST half a dozen times 😭 I hate small talk, and I hate being held hostage in a conversation, but I'm stuck in this cycle....I'm going to take your advice Dan....and just talk the fucking ears right off him next time 😆 For context - its always a 1 way conversation, he's always banging on about people who don't like him, and nobody wants to speak to him...(I understand now why), and constant trauma dumping, its actually really stressful bumping into him, but I'm socially awkward and never know what to say and end up standing listening to him for half an hour at least at a time 😭😅

That's the official version of the story, the real version is that Dermot Morgan ran a radio show where he imitated voices of top politicians like the Taoiseach Charles Haughey and RTE which is the national tv broadcaster which does what the government tells them to do, in this case not to offend the church. The brought it to Channel 4 in the UK and they obliged.

This episode half the comedy is in the awkward pauses and silences. But you ruined it by pausing WAY too much.

Yeah Catholic priests can smoke, and drink. Once upon a time they could marry too but that was changed for a couple reasons. One was to to prevent Church land getting passed to family, but the other reason was to avoid nepotism. If you look at the history of the Borgia Family, you'll see the Church had a bad history with nepotism. The Borgias ran the Church like the Mafia.

It was NEVER offered to RTE (Irish television). That is a complete myth!! The writers lived in London. A lot more money pitching to Channel 4. RTE showed it the same year. This was the 90's. Catholicism had lost it's power. Who perpetuates these ridiculous, bullshit stereotypes? 😂

Again wrong. That awful show is produced in partnership with RTE and BOC-pics (Brendan's production company).

Sorry, but your friend is wrong. That whole thing about Irish TV not picking up Father Ted is an urban myth. Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews have called bullshit on it plenty of times.

Weakest episode of any season. Gets way better after this one. Check for post-credit scenes - some episodes have them.

It's funny, Derry girls and Father Ted both have a kind of "boring" character in them. Father Ted has a few. Father Stone, the priest with the boring voice, and another one who talks endlessly but about nothing in particular.

I’ve never disliked father ted before, but left dude pauses at the most inappropriate moments and screeches like a hyena. Usually decent reactions, just tone it down and let it flow. 🖖
