Thank you so much for this video. After 2+ years of a "mysterious" coolant leak, and hundreds of dollars down the drain with mechanics whom never fix the leak...I was driving home today from work when smoke starting billowing from the hood, getting home I open the hood to see coolant spraying like crazy, and with a quick google search I find your video...long story short, you pointed to EXACTLY where it's spewing from, the gasket seam on the thermostat, and now I know finally where it needs to be repaired! Thank you!

This is only the beginning. In 3 years I've replaced 3 coolant recovery jugs, radiator, 2 thermostats, waterpump, water outlet, both upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses and turbo coolant hoses (along with the turbocharger). Each time I install a new part, a pressure test tells me the leak is fixed. Then, before long, I smell coolant again and the leak - finding process begins all over again. As of this writing, the cooling system is leaking yet again. This is the worst car I have ever owned. My next car will be a Honda...good luck!

GM puts in the cheapest parts. About a year ago, I had my reservoir replaced and with the help of your videos, I replaced my thermostat. I know that many cruze owners have trouble with the cheap, GM reservoir. There’s also a recall on most cruzes for the water pump, but you have to be within the 150k warranty to have it replaced for free.

Starting right at 2:00 minutes. That hose you are talking about has a smaller hose, #14 & #15 in the Chevy dealership coolant diagram, called a turbo charger coolant return hose line. The joint under the heat shield that connects to the hardline was leaking on my Cruze. Hope this helps others. Thanks for the video !!!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I decided against replacing the entire part since you have to remove the turbo to access it. I instead cut off the hose & hydraulic crimp off the hardline with my oscillating tool. I cut a 5/16 Dayco molded heater hose from AutoZone (B86800) to size & wrapped it with heat shield tape & added two new hose clamps. Seems like it works well!

You covered every part of the cooling system except for where my Cruze is leaking. The turbo itself is cooled by the cooling system and does develop leaks. Repair involves removing the turbocharger, but this is where my knowledge ends. I cannot find info anywhere on how to repair this leak. It would be nice to see a detailed instructional video that addresses the Chevy 1.4 turbo coolant leak. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Excellent video. Very informative. I've got a leak in my coolant system. The hoses to the turbo and the reservoir tank as well as the return line were all replaced. Had a pressure test done. Couldn't see any leaks. Not by me but from a shop. 1000$ later and I still have a problem. I'll keep an eye out around the thermostat and water pump area. Frustrating because about every 3 to 4 days, I have to add coolant. I'm not a grease monkey. Wish I was. I build elevators. I've learned alot from your channel and hopefully I can figure it out. AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR A GREAT VIDEO.

Thanks for the video - My Cruze is leaking and its either the water pump or the hoses on back firewall, or possibly the heater core. With this video I can now go and take a second 'better' look at all the places that it can be leaking from. My car only has 40K on it so I was surprised to have a leak so soon. When I looked under my hood my leak seems to be farther back than the water pump area. I also inspected that side of the engine already. Water pump didnt look wet and the leak appears to lower down than that, I know the leak can be flowing down to appear more under the car than it is.

Just installed my new coolant reservoir. Feels good. Only problem is when I filled it up, it continues to leak somewhere (just as the old one did) it’s disappearing in less than a minute. Only reason I replaced it is because a friend of mine, who has more experience than I do, took a look at the old one and suggested that that’s what it was. I seen a leak from somewhere under the old coolant tank but couldn’t point out exactly where it was, which is why I was quite sure it was the coolant tank itself. My problem is that it keeps saying “AC off due to high engine temp”. Had my thermostat and radiator replaced last year. Water pump replaced at the end of July.

I know your video is a few years old but I’m hoping somehow you’ll find my comments. I have a spraying leak that gets worse the lower my coolant is falling and more pressure is flowing. The leak is in the thicker hose directly under the water outflow valve. Would you advise using some silicone tape to seal until I can get into the shop for repair? Or anything that could seal/slow the leak for just a few days until I can get into the shop?

Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. We have an idea on where it’s going. Chances are it making its way past the engine seals and into the combustion portion of engine where it is being burned off and pushed out the exhaust pipe. Do you notice any discoloration at end of exhaust pipe or white smoke coming out of exhaust? Both are indicating that the coolant is being burned off with no trace of external leaks. @DIYwithMichaelBorders

Good morning ☕️ any update. This is usually the symptom of the internal seals wearing out and allowing coolant to leak into engine area that it’s being burned off and pushed out the exhaust. When this happens, white smoke will be visible coming out of exhaust…however not always.

Good morning, just poured a ☕️ and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. Great question, and that will depend on who you ask. Most important thing to do is stay away from spraying your engine with a hose of water or any cleaning products being carelessly sprayed all over engine. Both of which can cause havoc to your electrical system as it will likely get many of the internal engine component electrical sensors wet…which leads to the sensors acting very sporadically and acting as if they are faulty. The - spray cleaning product on a paper-towel and dap/wipe clean engine is the best method. Below is a link to a cleaning product we like. I’m getting a leak somewhere close to my passenger headlight under my bleeder at the bottom by the hose but it’s not coolant that’s leaking it’s oil. I get white smoke out the tailpipe on startup. And when I pull the dipstick out it’s hissing. You have any idea what it could be? I thought it was the valve cover and I changed it but I’m still getting a leak and the smoke out my tailpipe.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 5 жыл бұрын
Justin Fever Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment! A burning odor coming from your engine is no fun! Have you pin-pointed the exact cause? Your defrost not working may be related to a blockage. Sometimes objects & debris fall into the vents & block the heat. Once blocked, the object heats up & can possibly begin to melt/burn...leading to a not so pleasant odor. It can also be a failing Compressor pulley...causing your burning odor. Below is a link to our video that explains more about the compressor. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJ97lcpe3M-sdmw.html As far as the defrost, grab a flashlight & try and see if you can locate anything inside the vents that may be blocking your airflow. Any burning odor from engine requires immediate attention & no driving in our opinion. Keep us posted, we will figure this out together! Veronica Rodriguez Thanks for watching & sharing your experience Veronica! Let’s get this figured out together! Have you inspected all parts related to your Coolant System? Thanks for watching, that’s odd. Are you 100% sure it’s coolant, or is it brake fluid? If it’s brake fluid, it’s likely to be a leaking brake line near that wheel. If it’s coolant, is it coming out of the exhaust and spraying near rear tire…?…if so…it’s likely that your internal seals are allowing coolant into the combustion chamber and being burned and sprayed out exhaust. Just a bit of information to add, as a correction to your video. At/around the 2:30 minute mark of the video when you mention the radiator cooling fan, you are incorrect on what that fan does. It does not blow air against the engine. Those fans are designed to blow air against the radiator in order to cool it. It is a big misconception that a lot of people have.

@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 5 жыл бұрын
Arianna571 Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. An overheating engine is never fun. We recommend verifying you have the Coolant levels within the systems proper fill parameters. Low Coolant can cause issues. Next, your Water Pump may be beginning to fail. The actual part that your Thermostat connects to is your Water Pump. Once this fails, it no longer moves Coolant through your engine properly & leads to overheating. Unfortunately it’s a very common failure in the Cruze vehicle. Keep us posted. J R Thanks for watching & sharing your experience J R. We recommend starting engine & opening hood. Allow the engine to run for 15-20 minutes which will allow the engine to warm up to the normal operating temperatures and also allow your coolant system to properly pressurize. Next we recommend doing a thorough inspection of the engine, both on top and underneath to try and pinpoint the exact location of the coolant leak. It’s also very important as you know to not touch the coolant directly with your skin as it will most likely be very hot. Once you find the exact location of the leak, you can then turn the engine off and allow the engine to cool down. Definitely get back to us on where it’s leaking so we can move onto the next troubleshooting step on which part needs to be replaced and we can definitely answer any questions you have. My wife's 2014 Chevy Cruze thermostat has just begun to fail at 70,XXX miles. It's the one connected to the water pump on the left side of motor when facing vehicle for reference on lifetime of part. The coolant reservoir and connecting hoses all failed at 60,XXX miles for reference, all parts were replaced with Dorman parts well worth it about 35.00 Part in question is at @3:10

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders update the thermostat housing connected to the front left of the motor was a 2 part failure first was the rubber gasket, which is to be expected, nothing last forever. However after closer inspection of the housing the plastic tabs on the inside holding the plate and spring in place both had broken. So the valve was never fully closed and couldn't create a flush seal causing additional wear on gasket. Very interesting part, wish I could upload photos 📸 of the part for reference, part @ 3:10 for reference

@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & the Duralast brand is a brand we recommend for sure. You will want to ensure that the hose itself is shifted far enough onto the thermostat and then the locking clip is properly aligned and able to be shifted down to create that lock. It shouldn’t leak if new. Keep us posted.

if someone puts in a thermostat wrong can that cause coolant leak?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & it definitely can. Inside the thermostat is a rubber gasket and if not properly placed in position when securing the thermostat to the water pump, it won’t create the water tight seal it is designed to do. Welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Keep us posted on your project. 😎👍🔧🔩

Radiator fans draw air away from the radiator. Not blows at it. Unless it were out front. Then it would blow at it. But most importantly air is drawn from outside inside and onto the motor. Not blows at the radiator.. just saying thats gonna cause problems for anyone who doesn't know this.

I am leaking coolant in puddles in a 2013 Chevy Cruze LT RS. I notice the puddle mostly when at my girlfriends house on their concrete drive way which is on a slant. I’ve put the car on my dads lift and noticed lots of what looks like orange/red coolant traveling down the sides of the radiator and collecting on the bottom of the two radiator tubes at the bottom of both sides of the radiator. All the while coolant sprays on my motor in two spots and then travels down towards the bottom of my motor by my converter I believe as well as my oil drain cap Could this be from the gasket to the hose that goes to the pump from the radiator?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching & we appreciate you sharing this. The best thing to do is start engine & allow engine to warm up & reach normal operating temps. At this point, the coolant system will be fully pressurized and you will be able to pinpoint the exact location that coolant is leaking. Be careful to not touch any portion of engine nor coolant as it will be HOT. If it’s leaking from in-between the engine block and a part specifically, the inner gasket may have failed allowing coolant out which then must be replaced. If it’s leaking from a hose fitting or in the middle of a hose, the hose clamp may need to be tightened or the hose may need to be replaced.

Hi and great video! Sub'd. Just replaced the water outlet valve/heat temp sensor assembly (the original plastic cracked) and upon checking for leaks I noticed some "weeping" at the top of the valve, where your finger is as you point to it at 1:46. I installed a brand new OEM AC Delco and I'm wondering if you have any ideas 💡 on how to do a minor fix on this verses R & R the entire heat temp/water valve assembly? I thought of pulling the clip, pulling the return hose and wrapping this water return valve with a tiny amount of high temp plumbers tape to stop the minor weeping, I'm experiencing. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance ☺

Michelle Beljau Thanks for watching, by chance, have you obtained your error codes from your check engine light? If you do not have a scanner, you can visit your local AutoZone and they will hook up a scanner and read your codes for 100% free. Knowing the exact error codes will allow us to pinpoint the exact part that needs to be replaced. Believe it or not, a single part can lead to several error codes and the alert that you got.
