Remarkable how important the TMO is. Almost none of these is spotted on-field and assessed as a red card. Makes you think about the lower levels of play....

I agree. American Football uses 7 officials for only 22 total players. I imagine having only 3 officials on field for 30 players would be incredibly difficult to see most things.

It's kind of what you expect when it comes to lower level. In a provincial match neckrolls ect are pretty much legal because the ref can't catch everything. It's knowing how to play without being caught. It sucks, but it's how it is.

In lower grades, it's mostly amateurs, without the money involved there's less need to "win at all costs". Sure there are some super competitive players, but in the main they are there to play the game, and the deliberate fouls just aren't as prevalent. Money ruins everything

This is the reason why playing in an English Schools competition game I was punched in the side of the face and then red carded. No TMO, no clear view from lines judge so both players “initiating” the fight were given a red card despite my reaction solely being to laugh at the player who punched me whilst a fight began within the two teams

6:20 may be an important point to highlight. The player was asking what he should've done. We saw this kind of clearout a ton this year, including in the Japan allblacks game. If you can not get under the player, go over to latch on their back and lift/push/roll depending on local rules. There is a very good explanation done by nigel owens himself as a response to the japan example. Honestly, when it comes down to that kind of situation where the player has gotten that low already without briding, they've all but outright won the ball, and you may be better of not engaging. If there is no safe hit, dont hit.
@MadMarchTaffy

@jmurphy9657

Agree with the takeaway - dont hit - but think the officials need to do better at penalising / deterring illegal moves at the breakdown. Stormers player is clearly "off-feet", not supporting body weight, hands on the floor, so should be penalised but we see far too often that this type of play is permitted. Bundi shouldnt even need to go in here, in the knowledge that its a penalty and probable yellow card for cynical killing of the play. If the ruck gets cleaned up, then would players feel the need to fly into rucks, clearing players that have "gotten low"?

Players and fans need to understand that in order for rugby to have a chance of surviving in the future, head contact needs to be a no-go. When you sign up to play rugby you know it’s a highly physical game where injuries are commonplace: fractures, sprains, ACLs, you name it. And we accept it because we enjoy the physical nature of the game. But no one signs up thinking that they’re risking brain injuries, that’s just too much of a risk. Even though it’s been a tough process to get the new laws right, I believe we are starting to see a change in the mentality of players. If you are not in a position to make a safe tackle, you don’t move into the player. If the jackal is too low, and you can’t clear the player safely, then the ball is lost. If you can’t attempt to block the kick without risking to hit the kicker, you don’t commit. If you are not in a position to contest a high ball, you wait until the player lands and then tackle him/her. It’s these slow changes in mindset that will make rugby a safer sport in the future, not reckless old-school hubris.
@linalmeemow
@linalmeemow Жыл бұрын
Excellent post, it's rare to see someone who "gets it". The law changes and directives aren't making the game "soft" as so many (usually South Africans for some reason) like to bang on about - it's about saving the game from financial ruin from the lawsuits that are going to continue to rain down on World Rugby from brain-damaged former players if they aren't seen to be doing everything they can to prevent head injury.

There's so much work to be done yet to protect players. And the first thing is to differentiate accidents from obvious acts of foul play. The France-SA game is a perfect example. Both are red cards surely, but is there really nothing to separate the two? The citing commission's answer was yes, there's something indeed. A week. 4 weeks for Dupont and 3 for Du Toit. 4 weeks for the accident, 3 weeks for sheer thuggery. Only on appeal was Dupont's ban cut in half but isn't it a shame that he had to go through that in the first place? Everybody knows the guy's a class act. You've never seen a 9 so well-tempered ^^

@johnnibaz6883

@@tyroneerasmus6759 I don't find that too convincing though... It's in the right order of the game to compete for the ball, no matter how slim your chances of getting it might be. You might get a red card for it if it's dangerous and it's right. But diving head first straight into the face of another player is not only dangerous but also not in the spirit of the game. It's just like a punch, an eye gouge or an elbow in the face. That should warrant a longer ban every day, even with all the silly mitigations the citing commission might find. Now I'm not blaming the Boks more than any other team, just picking a convenient example there. All the teams do this kind of stuff. And all the bans should be just the same for the same offense.

I played in the late 60s through into the 70s and only a few of these would have resulted in a penalty. Having said that I still carry the results of some of the injuries which I sustained as a prop. It is right that we protect today's players, particularly from head and neck injuries, but at the end of the day it is a contact sport which comes with risk. The balance between maintaining the physicality of the game and safety is incredibly difficult, but I hope that some common sense will prevail.

Many head collisions are reckless absolutely but most deserving?. Deserving is deliberately going in to hurt the other player when they are defenseless and you have nearly zero chance of being hurt yourself. A lot of head collisions are just bad judgement and unlucky and have both players out for the count.

New to rugby, and there is something I dont understand. What are the rules regarding jumping receivers? That is, the moment the ball is flying in the air, and two players of opposing teams are running towards it with the intention of getting the ball without looking at each other. Who has the priority? The jumping player? The offensive player? Thanks!
@Leeside999

Sorry to see nobody answered you after all this time. The receiver has priority. But it's a bit more nuanced than that. Opposing players can contest for the ball in the air but the player who didn't catch it must ensure that he doesn't affect the landing of the player who did catch it. Hope that answers your question.

Because refs miss so much, if a player feels head contact, or any illegal contact, he makes a big deal of it to get the attention of the ref or TMO who will then go review the incident, usually resulting in at least a penalty, or at worst a red card. These football theatrics are a direct result of poor refereeing, and it is diminishing the sport. I've noticed many times a player receiving head contact, not making an issue and just getting on with it, and we don't see any tmo review. The refs can't see everything, so its almost like they take the attitude that if there's an issue, illegal contact or foul play, then the players will let them know by over reacting.

One of the issues now, is that retired players are now developing early onset dementia as a result of their repeated head injuries. Steve Thomson played for the World Champions England in 2003. He cannot remember the game 20 years later. Rugby is being sued for a failure to protect players heads. So this is what naturally must happen. Head contacts need to be policed strictly and harshly. If not, more players will suffer the consequences, and in the future would you want to risk the possibility of early on set dementia?

Kolbe on the other end arrived late, full speed, and he knows Dupont is here. He jumps, they collided, he fall very badly, it could have been very dangerous so its a red card, I agree, rule is the rule. but it's a red card for the result and not for the action as there is clearly, obviously, undoubtedly nothing wrong with what's Dupont did. The point was this guy doesn't know anything about rugby, I wouldn't be surprised he's just some Indian scam...

0:59 The officials got that one wrong. The tackle was perfectly timed, and in progress, when Woodman stopped, resulting in head-to-head contact. That should have been taken as mitigation and a yellow card awarded instead of a red. Ultimately, that mistake by the officials likely cost England the World Cup. If you watch the full replay, another identical tackle happens about 2 seconds later, where the ball carrier did not stop, and the tackle was perfectly legal.

Tackle was high all day, it is the responsibility of the tackler to be in a suitable tackle position when entering the tackle. Tackler came in upright to try wrap the ball and ball carrier, this is what lead to the head to head contact, nothing Woodman did.

Very few of these head on head incidents would be red cards in League, where heads clashes are seen as just that. I doubt if many players aim to stop attackers with their head/face. Account should be taken of which player is actually most reasonable for contact. Defenders who are passively virtually standing still shouldn't be sent off. Union is making itself look silly, like with the refereeing of scrums.

I'm sorry but some of these are outrageous. First things first as far as I'm concerned if a player wants to go and jump in the air to catch a ball and an opposing player is running towards it to try and catch and is looking at the ball the whole time he should not be punished for any contact, the player jumping in the air is putting themselves at risk, soon we will get to a point where opposing players will not bother even going for the ball and will ruin the game. That has to change. Also this bullsh** surrounding shoulders to the head needs to change in regards to the mitigating factors thing because they miss these factors almost 50% of the time. If a player is falling or drops their hear to initiate the contact then sorry but your own fault. You see it in this video instead of staying upright they put their head down looking for the contact it's cheating.

World rugby is at fault here. Players competing for the ball in the ruck leave only their head as target for oposition to clean out. There is no way to win your own ruck without putting yourself in a position to give away the penalty. All the law adaption and changes are not synchronized. They need to adapt the rules that players are rewarded on field for doing their job. Currently players do not know if they will receive sanction or not for doing their on field job. World rugby needs to do better

@@linalmeemow if that is true surely you would understand the frustration. Players compete on the ground illegally not supporting body weight. To stop them from slowing down your own ball you have to risk a penalty by entering the side or risk a penalty as the illegal player only offers his head. So what world rugby does is to penalize the head contact to ensure the game is safe. I agree the game needs to be safe but don't agree with the means. Clamp down hard on the players sealing off at ruck and illegally slowing down the game at rucks. This will make for less frustration and hence a safer game. Not only that but a more attractive game for spectators to watch. In short start treating the illness and not the symptoms
