Big balls to issue the first ever red card in a premiership final, but 100% the right call. Props to Wayne Barnes for stamping out any form indiscipline or disrespect towards refs in rugby before it becomes commonplace. 13.10 Drop-out DEFINITIONS A drop-out is a drop kick taken by the defending team. The drop-out may be taken anywhere on or behind the 22-metre line. A drop-out is used to restart play after an attacking player has put or taken the ball into the in-goal, without infringement, and a defending player has made the ball dead there or it has gone into touch-in-goal or on or over the dead ball line. 13.11 Delay in drop-out The drop-out must be taken without delay. Sanction: Free Kick on the 22-metre line. 13.12 Drop-out incorrectly taken If the ball is kicked with the wrong type of kick, or from the wrong place, the opposing team has two choices: To have another drop-out, or To have a scrum at the centre of the 22-metre line and they throw in the ball. 13.13 Drop-out must cross the line (a) If the ball does not cross the 22-metre line, the opposing team has two choices: To have another drop-out, or To have a scrum at the centre of the 22-metre line. They throw in the ball. (b) If the ball crosses the 22-metre line but is blown back, play continues. (c) If the ball does not cross the 22-metre line, advantage may apply. An opponent who plays the ball can score a try. 13.14 Drop-out goes directly into touch The ball must land in the field of play. If it is kicked directly into touch, the opposing team has three choices: To have another drop-out, or To have a scrum at the centre of the 22-metre line, and they throw in the ball, or To accept the kick. If they accept the kick, the throw-in is on the 22-metre line. So the ref decision is correct. It also means that players don't know the rules...

@samswiegers6266

The player knows the law, but was under the impression that half-time would be blown as scrum offenses are usually seen as a break in play. If the kicker had kicked it directly into touch from a less obvious position, say the middle of the field, it would probably have brought on the half-time whistle. He was, however, OBVIOUSLY going for a deliberate infringement which goes against the principles of the game. He was also warned about doing that. Very foolish. In a 90s Currie Cup match, Western Province needed a win against the blue bulls to reach the final. They were leading well with two minutes to go, but the bulls scored at the death, cutting the deficit too close for comfort. During the trip back to half-way, time expired. Joel Stransky's restart flew straight into touch (by some margin) bringing on the end of the match and ensuring a spot in the final for WP.

As a former referee in football, my policy was that being called a cheat is an instant red card, so in Rugby it has to be a red card, I wish referees in football could be like the ones in Rugby and actually communicate with the players, but the thing is in football I cant blame the players for having a go at the ref sometimes because the mistakes they make aren't good enough, I understand everyone makes mistakes but when you see how consistant rugby referees are it just shows how poorly football referees are trained.
@ofs82
@ofs82 8 жыл бұрын
+FootballRantz Rugby refs get a lot more assistance with the microphone communication with touch judges and the video ref though, plus the fact the clock stops means if there is something the ref needs to check he can call time off and get another look or opinion. It's definitely true that the respect for the officials in rugby allows the ref to have the time to make those decisions (which isn't always the case in football since the ref will be surrounded as soon as a contentious decision is made), however. The other thing is in football referees are given such a contradictory message. The idea is to let the game flow, so if a ref upholds the law to the letter and it becomes a yellow-fest, it quickly becomes a farce, but then if you let too much go then you end up with a mess like the Colombia-Brazil game where people started getting hurt completely unnecessarily.

Because he said "can't" instead of "can not". It is a loud stadium and the T is very very hard to hear in that situation. The kicker can easily hear "You can" and Refs often are generous and give you helpful tips in the rules, like you can kick it straight out (and end the half). The ref could have done much better in this situation as well.
@sabinrawr
@sabinrawr 7 жыл бұрын
+silvermoonrt Incorrect. In the American accent, "can" and "can't" have the same vowel. In Mr. Barnes' accent (and the accent used by everyone around him), the words sound quite different. "Can" sounds similar to American English. "Can't" sounds more like "cont", where the "o" is similar to the British pronunciation of the initial vowel in "aunt". There is no mistaking it.

the problem is, if referees at the highest level of football (rather than at lower levels where with less on the line respect for the officials seems to be a lot better) started sending players off for dissent, they'd start getting accused of ruining the game by repeatedly sending off crowd-pleasing players. The fact that for so long teams get away with surrounding the referee and arguing at length to protest any controversial decision, even putting their hands on them, even if non-threateningly that's an ejection in American football, for example, means that if they decided to get strict on that, you'd see a brief period with a huge number of sendings-off, and then FIFA would backtrack.

Watching the game back as a neutral.... it was well reffed by Barnes. a few contentious decisions, but largely the right ones. Tigers had the Saints pack going backwards all day and like the Wales v England game, if that happens the ref will always favour the dominant scrum. The 22 decision was spot on too, he tells Meyler several times he can't kick the ball straight out, so Meyler kicks the ball straight out. Not Barnes' fault, really, was it.

What a complete abomination of professionalism this turned out to be except for Wayne Barnes who was outstanding. Let us see some other referees with some backbone.

It's been 8 years. I've got my thoughts together now. 1. Ref makes the correct decisions and communicates so well. 2. The guy that kicked it straight out just overhit it by mistake. He understood the ref, but just misjudged the little low kick and it didn't bounce in play.

One of rugbys greatest attributes is the respect for a ref. If Barnes or others start to let stuff go you on the slippery slope. No matter what the occasion, the person or the ref, implementing it reinforces it. Therefore no slippery slope. So many sports badly need to learn from this approach

Myler plays rugby for a living. He should know the rules. It's not up to the referee to babysit the players through the game. I don't think Hartley's comments were really directed to Wayne Barnes here, I think he was talking to/about Tom Youngs. He is an idiot for doing it in such a manner after Barnes clearly outlined that any more chat from him would result in action against him. He's a chocolate teapot when it comes to big games.

I would think that the hardest decisions as a referee are the ones that you know will be poorly received by fans and players...but that you know to the centre of your being that they are the correct and appropriate decisions. That is where a 100% understanding in the rules of the game come into play and by extension a 100% conviction that your decisions are correct. The referee is the rock that the ebb and flow of the tide of play revolves around. The referee's decision forms the landscape of play.

You're forgetting something. That was a 22 drop-out, and Myler had to drop-kick the ball out. The ball did not bounce off the floor as with a drop kick, so Barrnes' decision was right, as Myler kicked it straight out, without the ball making contact with the floor.

31lafouine sorry man but wayne barnes is a fucking idiot and so is steve walsh, owens is a great ref. barnes is inconsistent at the breakdown and has no fucking clue how to ref a scrum, watch ireland vs france in this years six nations, when we clearly infringed at a scrum he penalised france, ten minutes later he penalised us for doing the exact same thing
@31lafouine
@31lafouine 9 жыл бұрын
Lucky for you, you won't see Walsh refereeing anymore. Barnes is a great ref, I'll stand by that. I think you don't realise how many things a ref has to check on each play. I am refereeing many games in amateur rugby in France and I can tell you this is a full concentration activity. Shitty calls happen and the rules of rugby leaves much space to interpretation. According to your name, you're probably Irish, and if you watch the last Wales Ireland you'll see how he always tries to keep the game carrying on and how he rewards the initiative, without advantaging unreasonably one team or the other. As for the managing of characters and hard plays, he is not as good as Owens who is the absolute reference but he is more than decent.
@seanryan282
@seanryan282 9 жыл бұрын
31lafouine sorry but tries to keep the game carrying on? he gave 25 penalties in the irish and welsh game, i think i read that before that game both teams had averaged giving away like 6 or 7 penalties a game, and not sounding like a bitter supporter but he gave 2 penalties to wales in the first half for ireland not rolling away but in the 2nd half during irelands attacking spell when wales absolutely shut us out,incredible defense, wales(especially faletau) were so slow at rolling away, and were slowing down irish ball and no penalties came for those offenses(they did get yellows for others im well aware but just for consistency sake). also i hate using irish games as examples but he did ref two of their games this 6 nations and both i found he made some ridiculous calls
