The spladle that Hardy got himself into can't be whistled dead for a stalemate because he was in a near fall position. So basically he just had to sit there for 45 seconds and take it. He rebounded and took 3rd though. Impressive considering I'd probably quit wrestling if that happened to me lol

The only time I ever pinned the best wrestler on my team (and top 5 in school history) was from hitting a spladle from the feet. He hit a single leg and I worked my foot to the outside and I dove underneath hooked his leg with my arm and caught his leg with my leg. Stuck. You are absolutely stuck from that position. He told me he’d pay me $500 if I ever pinned him. He didn’t pay up. It was fine. I also lost in the finals of a tournament that year to the same thing lol. It’s always embarrassing.

Coached a kid once who wrestled really well all day. Then in the championship round with everyone watching… spladle. There’s just no possible way to look cool while you’re caught in a spladle.

It's called a splaydle. Like a cradle but more....splayed....you see one once or twice a year at the high school level, I can't speak for college though.

Spladle!!! Typically a Spladle is due to a big error. If someone is riding legs on you, you can't stand up because that's the next move :P. You have to break the leg hold first.

Those are definitely not field hockey sticks. And they seem to be playing the ball with both sides of the stick, something you are not allowed to do in field hockey.

I know how the game is played, I know what type of action is going on, I know what the reals fans like to see. It just isn’t for me. I cannot stand watching it. But thanks for the info, I guess.

@@-BUGZ- playing at an amateur level for a couple seasons is not the same as understanding what "real fans" enjoy about the sport. You have never been able to get into it it as a fan and you cannot stand watching, why are you so convinced you know why other people like it? There's a lot more to it than simply knowing how the game is played, and there's a reason people don't watch US soccer nearly as much as the top level of the sport.

College guys are flexible, the ref was deciding whether or not to call near fall. All of that plays into things like the team score for the overall tournament, so it is important. But yeah, there's just no getting out of that.

9:26 So, for everyone unfamiliar with folkstyle wrestling, the ref isn’t actually at fault in this situation, the problem is that in folkystyle wrestling, you’re looking to either outscore your opponent or pin them by holding their shoulder blades to the mat for 2 seconds. The problem with this particular move is that it’s more suitable to freestyle wrestling, which is an entirely different style more suited to scoring, whereas in folkstyle, the person performing this move (Mendez in this situation) is also giving up their own back, thus potentially causing Mendez to lose via pin, while preventing Hardy from being pinned, because his shoulder blades are laying on Mendez’s torso. This is why Hardy is given two points before the end of the match, because Mendez is technically being pinned in this situation even though he’s in control. The ref is most likely confused on how to handle this situation correctly as it is a very delicate call, so letting time run out instead is just easier Edit: if you want to get even more technical about it, the lack of activity caused by performing this move could also lead to a ref to call a penalty for inactivity, thus forcing the wrestlers to reset in the referee’s position

You’re right that the ref isn’t at fault, but he absolutely wasn’t confused about the situation. Mendez had Hardy in a near fall danger position. Mendez was not in a danger position and didn’t give up any points as a result of putting Hardy in the Spladle.

@@TheSecondRush Mendez has one shoulder blade on the mat already tho, when I was wrestling, you would give up points if your shoulder blades happened to touch the mat and your opponent was on top of you regardless of who was in control, that’s why our coaches always told us to never sacrifice our back to score/pin

There are defensive falls in college wrestling, but that would only occur if Mendez had both shoulder blades on the mat. In college, you can have your back exposed and not give up any points if you’re in top control over your opponent.

This winter since there wasn’t enough snow in Minnesota for my local park rink to make a berm to freeze our rinks, I went up to skate at the USA Bandy home ice to skate a few times a week. The ice is even more massive in person. They fit 4 regular hockey rinks inside the ice for bandy. Insane sport

I wrestled in a tournament that Jessie Mendez was in while he was in high school, I didn’t have to wrestle him but every time he wrestled the entire place was basically just watching him including most of the wrestlers. He is simply incredible probably the best wrestler I have ever seen wrestle.

All Rikishi (sumo wrestler) belong to stables, there's around 40 of them. Stablemasters are the owners of the the stables and are former Rikishi themselves. They teach sumo and take on sort of a father role for all the wrestlers. A stable usually has around 30 or so Rikishi.

This one is not the greatest because getting shoulder blades to the mat was not easy due to positioning. I've seen kids pin themselves not realizing they had their own back down and not their opponent's.

9:01 this move is effective because it hurts the opponent,but you have to re-adjust to get the pin, because a lot of the times, when inexperienced wrestlers do this move, they will pin themselves with laying their shoulder blades on the mat, when the opponents shoulder blades are on top of himself. It’s a great move, but only if you know how to set it up and finish it.

Never even heard of Bandy but looks like the Green/White team scored in stoppage time like soccer based on the +2 by the clock and then it went into sudden death over time. Blue team scored the winner in the 92nd and the Green/White scored the tie goal in the 93rd.
