Something else that makes Archer seem a little more lethal than he may have actually been is that during the "war" _Enterprise_ was virtually the only Earth ship. 100% of the combat fatalities were under his command. You could say that Archer conducted an entire campaign and achieved a victory and saved Earth with a remarkably _low_ body count.

Janeway was the only captain whose ship was thrown into a quadrant 70,000 light years from Earth that had never been explored by humans. She had to stitch together a crew comprised of Starfleet officers, a Maquis crew who they had been tasked to apprehend and several aliens that they picked up along the way. They survived by their wits, sheer guts, ingenuity and bit of help from friendly aliens. All things considered, she had a tougher task than any of the other captains on this list.

Meanwhile, Kirk's Enterprise penetrated the barrier around the Milky Way and battled not one, but two would-be colonist species from Andromeda. Picard's Enterprise also paid a brief visit to the delta quadrant on invitation from Q. Voyager had one assignment: Bring up a pirate ship and return its crew to a Federation prison. As usual there were complications, but to be fair, Janeway did successfully complete her assignment. After seven years. Also, you forget about the Equinox.

Sisko is ultimate. You have to consider that, as commander of a DS9, he had way more than just the 300-ish Starfleet officers for whom he was responsible. There's also the Bajoran officers, station civilians, and countless persons of all different species (both military and civilian) going to and from the station all day every day -- a logistical nightmare, especially for security. And his security chief, Odo, ran things in a very non-starfleet way before Sisko took over.

I take some issues with how Janeway's was calculated. Specifically that year to year is not the same on Voyager. For example, does the 44 people include the people who died the first episode? Does the 150 include the Maquis (about 50) or the Equinox (about 30)? Look, Janeway is SUPER lethal in year one but gets steadily less lethal from then on, arguably, she has the best crew by the end of her series and could tackle the challenges of any other captain.

I would serve under Kirk, without a doubt. He has saved the majority of his crew from many, many attacks that would have been too much for other commanders. From what I have seen, Kirk can face some of the Federation's worst enemies without even a flinch. Kirk is sad if one of his crew members die and remembers their name, while other commanders would have simply moved on. I think Kirk is the most inspirational too. If his crew is faced with challenges, he goes on the ship wide intercom and gives a speech. And even if I didn't have very good chances of survival, i would have gotten to say I was on the Enterprise under command of James Kirk. I would have the honour of saying my colleagues included Spock, McCoy, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty and Uhura

Voyager was a vastly higher technology ship though. Archer holds the distinction of being captain of the Human flagship during Earth's first interstellar war. With often the lowest tech ship in the fight, with no back up and against an opponent who's strength and motivation were entirely unknown. If the face of that bringing both the ship and two thirds of the crew back should be regarded as a huge achievement even within the Star Trek universe where Starfleet captains are apparently expected to end entire wars by themselves.

I smell another video. If you isolate the casualty figures to the broad sense of "red shirt" (i.e. crew members with no name and/or die in the very first episode they appear) I wonder how the numbers change. A fair number of Kirk's red shirts actually survived their first mission in the first season. Archer would probably do fairly well. The writers took pains to introduce us to as many Makos as possible and the producers made sure to use them as extras walking the halls before, during and after the ground battle scenes. It would also be interesting to cross-reference that with transporter "suicides". The device works by destroying the original and creating a copy at a target location after all. For simplicity's sake, I'd only count each character once.

@Grizabeebles : Good question. Someone once wrote an article for TV Guide (little pulp rag in the day, not the glossy brown-snot-rag it's become of late) entitled, iirc, "The Glob's First Slurp." He describes it thus, and I paraphrase: "Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and somebody we've never seen before in a red shirt materialize on a planet. Kirk says, "Split up!" and the camera inexplicably follows the red shirt individual. Suddenly, there's a noise from behind a rock -- and that feeling you have in the pit of your stomach is that THIS PERSON IS GONNA BE THE GLOB'S FIRST SLURP!" (c.1975? 77?) I think it was James Blish who first explored the "Suicide By Transporter" theme in professionally published print in his Star Trek novel, "Spock Must Die", the first of all the original non-canon Trek books. He had McCoy explain it in Leonard's unmistakable character, but the scientific aspects vs. the spiritual implications were briefly explored. (It explained why McCoy doesn't like the transporter technology, while expositing the theoretical physics of the transporter accident to come -- oops, spoiler alert, if you haven't read it yet.) (c.1971? 72?)

There are variables that cannot actually be measured that affect the metrics - for example, the relative technology level of Picard's Enterprise as opposed to the vessels of Archer and Kirk add a significant safety buffer to Picard's crew. How many times can the NX-01 be struck by a standard torpedo of their era before it is venting bodies into space? Compare that with the defensive capabilities of the D. Terok Nor was a fixer-upper combining mostly outdated but well-maintained Cardassian technology with Federation patches and upgrades. The station originally had no weapons and the Federation crews were rushed getting defenses into place. Voyager was state of the art when it launched but it was designed for regular refits and replenishment, being trapped years from home, we see the ship transform over the span of the series as they do the best they can trading with alien cultures. Due to a few lucky breakthroughs and integrating stolen Borg technology, Janeway is ultimately blessed with superior weapons and defenses, but even then her ship is much smaller than Picard's Enterprise D and dwarfed by the Deep Space 9 station.

Take a good look at Picard during the DS9 premier. When he gave Sisko his orders and Sisko told him he had served on the Saratoga during the Wolf 359 incident. His demeanor went from inviting to uncomfortable, to stand off-ish. Yes he was intimidated by Sisko, but eventually he got his bearings back. However it was too late, he had lost ground in the encounter and had to resort to using his rank to secure his position. Ergo, he was intimidated.

It really isn't fair to judge Archer like the other captains. 1: NX-01 pretty much fought the entire Xindi war on it's own. Like STB claims the USS Franklin, and presumably other warp 4 vessels helped, but the NX-01 was really the only shop holding the Xindi behind until Shran joins in. 2: The final episode of ENT claims the ship had been in space for 10 years, in that time we don't know how many people joined the crew, how many were lost, etc. 3. All of the other ships have shields, better warp, better weapons, better overall protection and so he was working with much less 4. He also had a smaller medical staff, with really only one nurse who just disappears after season 1, a very small sickbay, and less advanced medicine (most applies to Janeway too) but Picard, Kirk, and Sisko all have full fledged medical personal, with multiple doctors and nurses. Also let's not forget, Sisko lost a ship, so we can assume a large portion of the Defiant's crew was lost, and Picard (although in movies) rammed his ship into a Romulan vessel completely destroying the front portion of his vessel (likely lots of causalities) and had Borg board his ship on numerous occasions, most prominent in First Contact when they lost a good couple of decks to the Borg. I know you only included confirmed deaths, but Janeway lost a massive amount of her crew when she reached the Delta quadrant. We know Voyager was understaffed for it's entire voyage, and she had enough room to take aliens on and add an entire Maquis raider crew. But I guess you could say you can't judge each captain the same because each one was under different circumstances

Picard, it's always Picard. He is the most thoughtful, intelligent, and all around compassionate. He also breaks the prime directive the least (I think. maybe that should be your next episode.).
@Idazmi7
@Idazmi7 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, TNG also showed that he is a rebellious old coot who is willing to break protocol for the dumbest reasons imaginable. In fact, here's a breakdown of what I saw, episode by episode: Picard is seriously willing to let non-Federation aliens murder one of his officers just because they were upset that he kicked over a potted plant. ("Justice", S1, E8) Picard lets his officers violate the Prime Directive by bringing a primitive life form aboard the Enterprise, unwittingly causing a religion to form around himself. When the situation predictably deteriorates, he ignores the counsel of the presiding anthropologist and violates the Prime Directive further by *_bringing another one aboard_* and openly demonstrating the Federation's technological superiority to bronze-age primitives. ("Who Watches The Watchers", S3, E4) Picard let Cardassia break it's treaty with the Federation and build illegal military bases in the Cuellar system, thus endangering millions by opening up the possibility of another Setlik III massacre. ("The Wounded", S4 E12) Picard _directly and intentionally violated the Prime Directive_ by willfully inserting one of his must trusted officers into a non-Federation court as a judge, and himself into the same court as a plaintiff, in an arbitration case that did not involve a Federation citizen or planet. ("Devil's Due" S4, E13) Picard is willing to sacrifice the lives of _thousands_ of Federation citizens in order to open a diplomatic dialogue with a monsterous creature that eats the populations of entire planets, placing the needs of the few _above_ the needs of the many. ("Silicon Avatar", S5 EP4) Picard turns a blind eye while his First Officer willfully violates the Prime Directive by attempting to interfere with a non-Federation planet's legal decision regarding one of their own citizens, and further attempts to stage a jailbreak for the accused. ("The Outcast", S5, E17) Picard encounters "Hugh" - a human who was kidnapped as a child by the Borg and 'assimilated' as one of their enslaved drones. After freeing him from the Borg, Picard _sends him back to his kidnappers_ and refuses to deploy a weapon that would destroy the Borg species - an action that later on cost thousands of Federation lives and caused several entire species to go extinct. ("I, Borg", S5, E23) Picard consistently runs his ship at far below battle readiness, and his First Officer is a disrespectful and impetuous fool with almost no discipline. ("Chain of Command" S6, E10 and 11) Picard is reprimanded by an Admiral for refusing to deploy the anti-Borg weapon before, and is given *direct order* to destroy the Borg the next time he encounters them. He just ignores the order entirely. ("Descent", S6, E26 and S7, E1) Picard disobeyed direct orders from a superior and compromised Federation security by _deliberately_ giving classified intelligence to active belligerents. ("The Pegasus", S7 E12) This is just what came to mind: I'm certain I could find more examples if I cared. In TOS, this man would have faced a Court Martial and Dishonorably Discharged. It's enough to make a man want to jump into an active plasma conduit.

Would Archer have gotten Voyager home from the Delta Quadrant any better? Could Janeway command a space station? Could Sisko be the 1st ever star ship captain?

The author of the video used the bare minimum for the stats since it's the only reliable number since the crew size likely fluctuated between seasons due to war. The video doesn't mention how many people were on the DS9 station as far as civilians go either. We know that it's several thousand.

The circumstances with Janeway are different. She was alone in uncharted space. She did not have any allies to rush to her rescue. She did what she could to survive.. that meant integrating a rebel crew (the maqui) in with her own. Most importantly, she was Star Fleet to the core, playing by the rule, never compromising her integrity to take short cuts to get home faster. Like I said, the circumstances were different, and for all the Voyager "haters" out there, I don't think she gets the credit she deserves. But I do appreciate the compilation of data to produce this video. I always wondered about the death numbers in the TV cannon. Well done.

Is anyone else out there an SFDebris fan? Because the choice comes down to Johnathan ''Duchess'' Archer and Kathryn ''Marlboro'' Janeway. Whilst both of them have committed acts both horrific and negligent, Janeway at least was clearly suffering from tremendous guilt as the series wore on, whereas Archer decided in ''Night in Sickbay'' to risk stranding his entire crew in deep space because he was too prideful to apologise to an alien race who had a spare part they needed. And why did he need to apologise? Because he had let his dog take a piss on a sacred monument. No captain comes close to the amount of innocent lives that Duchess has risked stamping out.

[Edited] The NX-01 was also a very primitive ship and had little ability to safeguard the crew during combat. So when the shooting starts teh NX-01 is going to take loses. Otherwise, Archer was not reckless. Kirk was reckless. That simple. That and his crew was mostly way too gung-ho for their own good. This is the generation where they should have learned to wear armor. Sisko was good but the gear helped a lot. Of all the captains he was the only one who had combat experience and reason on top of duty to survive and make sure everyone else did. A son. With that in mind, he also knew most of his crew had family on DS9 or elsewhere they would want to get back to. Picard, despite having a glass starship (the [Enterprise-D]is fragile as a wine glass compared to most ships of the era), did a really good job all things considered. When a Death happened more than most other captains, it was unavoidable. Ship was attacked out of the blue by enemies at least as powerful. Janeway was up the attrition creek without a paddle. She did the best she could, but ultimately 70,000ly from home with no ability to properly rest repair and resupply, having to cross one patch of hostile galaxy after another. Oy! It would have been impressive if Voyage made it home the hard way and about half the crew were descendants of the original crew, and the other half made up of alien races that joined the crew to escape, explore, or other reasons. Voyage becoming a generation ship. Even the ship itself had been modified by some machine race turning the ship into a sentient robot space whale. Kind of like Moya from Farscape. The Doctor was transferred to an android body.

agreed on most points. How did Sisko have more combat experience than the other captains though? From what I know before the cardassian/dominion war he served during the battle of wolf 359, but thats about it? Picard earned his first command due to his performance at a battle situation and was given fleet commands due to his experience on multiple occasions. Kirk served during the federation-klingon wars and took part in the battle of Axanar. Janeway served and commanded during the cardassian wars, like most of the star fleet personnel during that time, before being given command of the voyager. Basically archer was the only one not having seen any war before the start of their respective series
@DocWolph
@DocWolph 6 жыл бұрын
TheVergile, I should be more specific, Sisko wears his combat experience much more on his sleeve and was also much less willing to let it go. More than anything Sisko's experience was the most refined and fresh. He has barely had any time to settle. Only a few months after Wolf 359 he is assigned to a the equivalent of the Korean DMZ. Janeway also did not have much war experience as her was one of just getting home. Hers was about survival and getting home not negotiating hostile forces and deliberately stubborn alien govts while fighting against a truly devious and ruthless foe. I agree on Archer completely. I deem a lack of experience more a prescient than recklessness (Per Clearpira's concern). the NX-01 was deployed by command before it was completely ready. That was NOT Archer's say so. It is also an old saw that Starfleet will deploy the hero ship into a dangerous situation before it is even nominally ready. Picard fell back to become a peacetime Captain. He has had the hardest time actually coping with hard combat and having command of a ship that might as well be made of glass and tin foil does not help. Diplomacy only works if the other side is willing to talk. So eventually Picard get a battleship, and is still bad at combat too quick to fall back on emotion under duress. Kirk was too much a cowboy and relied on the rest of the crew to pull him and ship out of the fire he so recklessly steered it into. It is true, Kirk is literally responsible for 90% or the travails that befell the Enterprise. Really it boils down to ones record and the fact Sisko has the most difficult, complicated, and unbroken recorded, the least and shortest periods of peace time,of any of the captains. Other than Archer, Sisko is the most actually soldier of all the captains. Picard is a diplomat. Janeway is a scientist, and Kirk while the third most soldier is also the most reckless and the reason why all other captains since do not like Kirk's style.

Kirk could only be considered reckless for the first few episodes that endangered the ship. He was almost never reckless after that because he knew his crew's capability and pushed it just shy of its limit each time. Not counting the movies Kirk never rushed into something he knew his crew couldn't handle.

Rather horribly bias. Firstly because of ships. Two of the three versions of the Enterprise were flagships and arguably the best ships in the quadrant for their time. DS9 is a station and Defiant a warship. Even Archer’s Enterprise, while not as large a fish proportional to its pond, was a decent cruiser doing the job it was created to do. Voyager on the other hand was a glorified scout designed for short missions, not the decade long journey it was stuck with. Secondly because the majority of the Voyager deaths were in the first episode. A single data spike followed by almost a decade of minimal losses. Why does Archer get two calculations but Janeway doesn’t?

ben good archer fought the borg too. the enterprise D and voyager are much more advanced ships, and they have shields. picard lost 70 crewmembers to the borg because he overestimated them. janeway went to a nebula for coffe. sisko won the dominion war via deus ex machina. archer had a timetraveler who helped him, but he was supposed to defeat the xindi and unite the federation anyways, it was the xindi who altered the timeline forcing the timecop to get involved. archer did the best he could, while the other captains acted stupidly.

Which you would want to serve under also includes the rest of the crew, the type of ship, and the nature of the mission. Taking that into account the Enterprise D seems the best, but that's rating it like you would rate a cruise ship, and really at that point just living on Earth and taking one of the very nice but boring ships for vacations to places like Risa would really be your best bet. In terms of learning new stuff, that would be either Voyager or the NX Enterprise.

That's a... weird response to that question. There's plenty of reasons to not want to serve under Janeway besides "hur dur she's a woman". I wouldn't want to serve on Voyager for two reasons. A: Realistically their situation would be much more akin to the Equinox than the series portrayed. Voyager really got a lot of plot armor with how battle damage and attrition never seemed to effect the ship for more than a couple of episodes. B: There are a lot of episodes that make me question Janeway's mental fitness to serve as a commander. It gets handwaved a lot, and of course it rarely gets addressed outside of the episode it shows up in, but there are plenty of episodes that portray her as clearly unstable and maybe even psychopathic. The Equinox episode for example, or the multiple episodes where she threatens her command staff when they try to suggest that she take time to relax after months of constant stress, or that maybe she shouldn't continue with her current plan because it breaks regulation or basic morality like when she helps the Borg genocide an entire species.

My first order in her place would be to evacuate half the ship and dimm the lights. That would serve quite an amount of energy. And as second change I would try to get into a dialogue with the part that came from the Marquis. Sure Chakotay knows both sides, and he did a great job as first officer, but maybe bending Starfleet rules a bit would've helped alot. After all the initial mission was to find and capture the marquis. She basically did that in the first episode. After that it is al about getting home. There are neither time nor resources to help every little planet on the way. Archer did a better job at that even though he made quite the noise in the galaxy.

The way you extrapolate the percentages for multiple years is incorrect. You simple assume that the same number of people die each year based on the original crew size. If you really wanted to use the percentages you presented then you raise the percentage to the power of the years for the chance of survival. Take the case of Voyager with a 96% chance of survival. The chance someone survives 5 years is 0.96^5=0.815 or 81.5% not the intuitive answer of 20%. Using this, some of the crew will survive the 75 years, 4.68% to be exact

Wait, wouldn't the destruction of ships under Siscko command also count as well? For he did command Starfleet contingent during the Battle for DS9 and several Chictonka battles. And thousands died in those battles with ships being destroyed with all hands. Or are were just going for those directly under his command in hero ships/stations? Also, shouldn't be noted the majority of Janeways death happen when they were brought into the Delta Qudrent so wouldn't it be different going through the years. Also, I believe in the unalter timeline, it was 23 years she got the crew home, so just made it.
@TheVergile
@TheVergile 6 жыл бұрын
that would be difficult since then we would need to decide whether Picardy losses as acting fleet captain against the borg do count. also that one time he nearly destroyed the whole universe. good times. Janeway also had some fleet battles where she basically acted as commander.
@raw6668
@raw6668 6 жыл бұрын
He said no movies, just the series. Also with history reset during the year of hell, she did not lose any ships under her command. Though I think even if we count the movies, Picard took command only once in a major fleet battle and lost only three ships, I think. So Siscko kill count would be higher on a overall level, but Picard did lose a lot people in the movies on his ship.

Kirk has always been my Captain to follow, but having watched Janeway in Voyager, she really impressed me. Now I have to say first, I thought for sure I wouldn’t like her. However, as the series went on, she proved to be a tough Leader. Especially in a situation where she had to integrate the Marquis into her crew. Another was a life and death decision with Tuvok and Neelix when they were mixed in a transporter accident (Tuvix) Captain Janeway was great in her approach and decisive and strong in her decision. She dealt with all this and more without anyone else other than her crew to get input from. Kate Mulgrew really won me over in her portrayal of Janeway...I hope they bring her back for at least a guest appearance. Thank you very much for sharing such a great subject.
