I have never learnt anything about African history, I think, apart from the colonial and post-colonial era, and even then never too much in depth. This was a very good documentary, and a good introduction for me, and no doubt also for others. Well done mate, its a very well-made film. I hope the channel grows.

I thought only one country was allowed to be the caliphate? During medieval times I thought it was held by the abbasids and then got taken by the ottomans?

Thats one of the common misconceptions about Caliphates. Muslims have had periods where two or more caliphates existed simultaneously for several years. A Caliphate is simply a region under the rule of a Caliph and a Muslim man historically must fulfil numerous criteria to be eligible for the position of caliph, including extensive education in Islamic history and law, a deep knowledge (ie: memorisation) of the Quran, and a reputation for integrity, justice and bravery. This romanticism of the Sokoto caliphate is problematic for me. The accomplishments were outstanding, but so was its failures.
