I've just purchased the .22 Gamo swarm magnum and it cost me $1.275 in New Zealand dollars. Here in Christchurch or anywhere in NZ it's the most powerful brake barrel rifle available here. I must say, it's awesome power is worth every penny, especially if you have a decent scope. I just love it.

I finally got one. I love it. Great plinker! Accurate AF, too. However, the pellets don’t always load properly resulting in misfires.

Some really good choices here. I had a collection of 40 rifles about 10 years ago and owned 3 of the 5 here. I was going to be disappointed if you left the Trail off the list, but I had confidence seeing that the first you mentioned was the Hatsan 135. I wasn't disappointed. I also owned the Diana. While I understand completely why you made these choices, I have a soft spot for guns with varying purpose (e.g., I had an Anschutz target rifle that cost someone a mint, a few side levers, a few bottom levers), and design (the Cometa Fusion). I kept a Norica Storm dialed in for ratting. All really beautiful guns. I grew to understand too much was made of simple 'power'. Some brands appear to have either changed names or gone out of business. The Tech Force 89...RWS 48... I wish I had just one back.

This takes me back to the good old days. When I was about 10 years old I had an RWS Diana break barrel that I would shoot every day! I put thousand of pellets through it. Air guns are great for children! It teaches marksmanship and gun safety to prepare them for real firearms. They’re a great stepping stone from Pellet guns, to .22 rimfire, and then by the age of 16 you can start them off with higher caliber center fire guns.

The transonic pressure wave bigins about 920 fps, this pressure wave destroys the aerodynamics of any diablo pellet making it unstable and inaccurate, so, over 900 fps you need a slug driver.

I have a .177 Ruger Air Hawk for $200, shoots around 1000 FPS with Lead Pellets. And I love it, its a great budget rifle, that has a manageable recoil and break barrel (This is also coming from a 240 pound 6' 4" football player, so it may vary for you.) I have used other rifles, but for a budget rifle. It's a great, high quality rifle that is made out of only metal and wood. A great rifle I'd recommend for anyone, despite what you're using it for (Plinking, target practice, hunting, etc.) or what level of experience you are.

years ago I purchased the original Benjamin Trail NP in .22. I replaced the trigger with the tune-a-trigger and put a 3 x 9 x 40 Bushnell scope on it. there is no better accurate air rifle out there. I own several PCPs and this is my go-to gun for small game. I am considering the NP2 in .25 to go with my Hatsan sniper in .25, which is awesome. I am also strongly considering the Hatsan QE135 in .30. when spam hits the fan PCPs will be worthless if there is no air. and a hand pump is a really bad idea. you will not fill a 4500 cc tank with a hand pump. maybe 3/4 of that with great difficulty.

There is a point at which to much power for speed takes away reliability both in the gun , scope and accuracy ! I say this because I have owned them , a word of warning , when you shop always look at the guns with good reviews from owners and the companies that specialize in Airguns ! Cheap isn’t the way to go and be sure you shop for the right caliber for your needs , stick to .177 or .22 .

I really have to chuckle when I hear people talk about the "sizeable" recoils of break barrel pellet guns. From someone who routinely shoots .30-.06, .300 WinMag and even .50 BMG, the "recoil" of my Gamo Magnum is more like a barely perceptible nudge in the shoulder.
@scottmurphy650

@@jason3211 I can see where it could kill the kind of scopes which usually come with the rifles, which to be honest are usually only one notch above junk, but if you put a rifle scope on it I don't think it will be a problem. The Simmons Aetec that I have on my Gamo Magnum was on a .270 for several years with no issues. If it can withstand that kind of recoil, I doubt a pellet gun is going to hurt it in the least. I think the reason people have problems with scopes failing is they want to go on the cheap. It comes with a scope, why should I shell out for another one? If you get even an inexpensive scope that is rated for actual firearms I think you will be fine.

It's not the same thing (though, the terminology doesn't quite reveal it). Inside of the "receiver" (air-chamber or a can where the air is going to be sucked-in during the "breaking" of the barrel) of a "springer break barrel" airgun, there is a (huge and heavy) piston mounted into the axis of that (huge and heavy) spring (coil). When the squeezed spring is released upon the trigger being pressed , it moves fast towards the rear end of the barrel (towards the breech with the pellet in it) and, together with the piston heavily COLLIDES with the front part of that air-chamber, compressing the air and forcing it into the breech. Such collision, plus the pressurized air being forced into the barrel, plus reactive movement of the spring with the piston, create a WHOLE LOT of recoil, and, in addition to all this, the spring tends to SHAKE and rattle much LONGER (half a second or, maybe longer than a second) unlike the, say, a bolt action fire weapon's corresponding hardware. This prolonged spherical-shape kind of shaking&rattling&trembling&bouncing causes the scopes (or holographic red dot sights) to get compromised quite quickly (sometimes, after just a dozen of shots). Mounted on any PCP or 22LR gun, the same, dirt-cheap china-made scope would last pretty much forever.

@@DrAgan_tortojed I am well aware of the mechanics of air rifles but why is it you hear so many people talk about their scopes failing? The scopes that come with most air rifles are pure shit. The scope on my Rem 700 .30-06 and .300 WinMag's (Vortex 5-25x50 Viper PST Gen 2) cost more than the rifle. In the last 4 years I have bet I have put 4000 rounds through each and the zero is still on even making range and wind adjustments all the time on the target turrets, , and both, the .300 WinMag kick like a really pissed off mule with my hand loads. I have had the same Nikon Tactical Scope on my AR-15A2 for 10 years and there is no telling how many rounds I have put that rifle since then. Once again, I have never had to re-zero the scope, again with making numerous turret adjustments for range and wind. I had the "Ruger" scope on my Air Hawk Elite 11 .177 for 6 months before it failed and I consider the "recoil" on that rifle to be no more than a very gentle "nudge". It now has a UTG 3-6x32 AO on it and it has not wavered one click in the last year.

@@scottmurphy650 I agree - Vortex, Nikon, Leupold, Swarovski...which cost a fortune are all made to last long. Too bad, not many people are ready to pay for such scopes and to put them on a 400$ Hatsan brake barrel airgun chambered in cal 30... What I tried to explain is that the brake-barrel airguns do not RECOIL the same way the majority of firearms do (spring pistons' behavior is different than what happens with the fire weapons' movable parts). Very good video, I hope you can understand my bad english, I am writing from Costa Rica. There is one break barrel rifle which is pure quality, and it is not in production right now. The Beeman Kodiak, it is the same Webley Patriot made in England 20 years ago. The Webley Factory was sold to Hatsan in Turquey, and the Patriot rifle never had the same quality. Another excellent break barrel rifles are the Beeman R-1 and Beeman R-9. Besides these break barrels, I have several hatsan 135 cal .25 and .22. And the Crosman Benjamin 725 XL. The Hatsan rifles are very good magnum break barrels, well done, beatiful wood, powerful, but they dont have the quality or the accuaracy the Beeman rifle has. The most accurate pellets for my Hatsan 135 are JSB Exact King Heavy 33,95 gr. H&N Baracuda 31 gr and H&N Field Target Trophy 19,91 gr

I found my 11 plus pound, (with scope), hatsan 135 .30 cal. to be pretty junky, but I did get it to shoot well with the large pellet drop. I also found their customer service to be about as good as the IRS. I gave away the gun, and will never support the islamic nation again. My mistake there. I find the Gamo magnum .22 to be a great mag springer. It locks up well, it can make over 29fpe, (but usually around 27fpe, so use heavier pellets), it is light for a mag springer, the magazine is wonderful, the trigger is good out of the box, but can be easily tuned to 2lbs, (pretty safely I think. I have to test that.), and it is made in Spain. I did earn a quality engineering degree, and I can tell the gamo is better quality than hatsan, at least with the guns I have. I never tried a coil spring, but I think I would like a gas ram better overall. What is amazing me right now is the .177 and .22 cal.'s for break barrels is matching the best speeds/fpe of PCP guns of the same caliber.
