If you are new to airguns and you are wondering if a PCP or a Break Barrel is the best choice then check this video out and get some straight answers. The Umarex Gauntlet and the SIG ASP20 both in .22 cal are the airguns used in this video. These were chosen because they are close in price accuracy and power. If you get an Umarex Gauntlet and a hand pump it would cost you about the same as the SIG ASP20 Break Barrel.
There are great reasons to get break barrels and the same goes for PCPs it comes down to personal preference and this video should give you some great things to think about when you are deciding what you prefer... Break Barrel or PCP ... PCP or Break Barrel...?

As someone who's been a long time small game hunter but just recently got into air rifles I'm glad I went with a break barrel for my first air gun. I really didn't like the thought of dealing with tanks, pumps, or compressors just to kill some squirrels. I disregarded all of the "springer aren't accurate" nonsense and bought a $150 break barrel in 22 and I've absolutely slaughtered the squirrels with it this year. Head shots all day long at the 15-30 yards I typically hunt. Plus endless plinking around with no pump to refill. If you're going to be doing serious target/long range shooting then a PCP would be worth the investment. But if you're small game hunting at typical small game distances you're not really giving up anything by going with a break barrel and it's more convenient having a self contained system that never needs refilling and isn't so temperature sensitive.

I just started with a $160 0.177 break barrel. I get 1.25" groups at 22yds so I would say 25yds is my confident max. Video prices didn't include optic. So it's costing some $300 to add 30yds to my package. I think his velocity is too high so he should try a little heavier pellet.

I recommend the Gamo Swarm fusion in .22. I've had mine since last fall and it's never let me down. Also people who say "springs aren't accurate" just don't understand break barrels. They are held completely different than a real firearms. Most of them don't use a spring anymore, they use a nitro piston cylinder.

Hi ... I returned back to shooting over a year ago, I went for the 0.22 Gamo Varmint Swarm 10x shot with the 10 pellet magazine, for around £235 it was a great choice ... Would love PCP but at the moment what with all the added stuff PCP needs it's slightly outside my price range, but the great thing about springer’s is that all you need is the Rifle & Pellets and away you go ... ! Thanks for your valued content on here ... Keep up the great work ... !

Springers forever. You have to really work for the rewards with a break barrel.. When it all comes together it's the greatest feeling. Then there's the things that only a break barrel can offer. The feel. The smell. The feedback. You are so much more in touch with your gun than with a PCP.

Yeah, it’s like the argument of if an AR15 is better than some .308, 30, or 300 mag bolt action. Yes, ar15 are easier, but there is nothing like securing a kill on a deer with a bolt action, where one wrong move can mess you up. On a semi, all you have to do is shoot twice.

It depends. For plinking, I choose the break barrel. For pest control, you've got to use PCP because it much quieter than a springer, and you don't have to take your focus off the target to break the barrel. Usually, the accuracy of a PCP is better than that of a break barrel. For example, A PCP can be accurate at 50, 75, and 100 yards, or even 200. But a break barrel can only be accurate at 25.

@@liedebunker1253 my 220€ gamo replay .22 groups dime size at 40 yards with lead free pellets. Same with my .177 Gamo cfx royale. Half inch groups all day at 40 yards. Even at 50 when there is 0 wind. The cfx isn’t even hold sensitive i rest it on the nastiest freaking things and it still shoots straight even with shitty gamo pellets.

I started off with the RWS Diana 48/52 spring air gun. Quit using it because I couldn’t never get it sighted in. Nobody told me that you can’t use a regular scope on a springer beck because of the crazy recoil pattern and that it would break the scope! Duh! Fast forward 25 years, new scope and range and I’m having a blast with this rifle. Good job on these reviews, keep them coming.

Meh, the volume is relatively low, even if compressed to 220/240 bar. A PRV set to just above the working pressure on the cylinder should be absolutely fine. Treat your cylinder in terms of maintenance as you would any pressure vessel..

I just got this one a week ago. Gamo Swarm Magnum 10X GEN 2 .22 cal.. In the right hands, and a proven scope, (like my little Leupold 3-9x33 AO freedom series, proven to me on my mag springers with over 2500 shots), that gun will put you in the PCP zone to 100 yards. The 10 shot clip is very cool too, on a break barrel, and the barrel locks up very nicely, (best I ever had, but I may get this Sig next and see if it is as good as advertised). With that gun, and my way of holding them, (Don't hold it basically, or touch it as little as possible and let the gun do it's thing the same every time), I will take this guys money with that PCP all day long.

I have and use both on a regular basis. My pcp`s are Edgun Matador, Daystate(2), FX, the springers are Pro Sport, R1, FWB124D. If I go to the woods it`s the Matador or the R1, down in the basement it is the AA or the FWB. They are all capable of small game hunting, and have taken many small critters. My favorite is the beautiful older FX Tarantula S in .22, with a six section FX moderator. I don`t see one type being better than the other, just different.

Ben, may I call you by your first name? I'm Mike. You have given me so much insight to airgunning, and so much valuable comparison data, that I used your reviews to determine my first adult airgun purchase. I like a challenge, so I opted with the Gamo Swarm Maxxim in .177 cal., thinking along the lines of squirrels and Blue jays within 35 yards. Wow! This isn't my old pump-up Crossman from 1974! Gamo 10.5 gr. Wildcat ammo ( black nickel anodized) gives a sub-MOA group at 50 yards. I killed a 12 lb. opossum last week with one clear brainpan shot at 25 yards. He didn't take a step, just stood straight and stiffened, then fell over dead. These things are not toys.

I’d like to have a PCP but at the same time I love my two break barrels… You just can’t beat the rock solid reliability. If you want to go hunting grab a rifle and some pellets and take off… It doesn’t get much easier than that… I didn’t have much trouble with accuracy when I first got my break barrels once I got the barrel seasoned. It takes several pellets before you’ll really see the best performance from a break barrel… I can shoot dime sized groups at 30 like it ain’t nothing. Truth be told most of your shots will be anywhere between 20 and 40 yards when you’re hunting. Unless you just want to get a mil-dot scope and really dial in your shooting skills for longer range and put yourself to the test… I’ve practiced from 50 yards and did pretty good but I’ve only taken a few shots hunting at that range in reality… Great video, I’m really enjoying your channel…👍🏼

I enjoy your program and was wondering if the Right-hand cocking may be a slight factor impacting accuracy. It is observable your upper strength is healthy. just for the heck try cocking with your Left hand....and see if anything changes....your Right upper body does unusual motions that the Left side does not when using a break barrel. Blood and other body fluids combined with muscle/joints sudden ...cocking motions.....could impact right index muscle control, right index finger surface sensitivity, and the post cocking motion kinesthetic skills......it would be interesting....thanks again Samuel Joseph Bell

I’m brand new to air rifles… the more research I do, the more I’m leaning toward break barrel. They seem to be much more price friendly for entry level/beginner.

Very helpful, nver considered PCP as I have been borrowing a break barrel, but PCP for me, no recoil will mean the family can get in on the action squirrel hunting!

I have no idea why people say the recoil is heavy in any airgun. I found the best way to hold a springer, is to try not to put any forces in the stock that you don't have to. Touch it as little as possible, and your kids will be dropping squirrels. I even move my springers away from my shoulder and cheek, (just barely touch), because any differing force into the stock does affect the vibration dynamic of the gun. They are fun to learn how to shoot, and if anybody on YT won't to to 50 plus yards with them,--they are not a good shot with a springer. Nobody got a sore shoulder from the recoil of any mass produced airgun. But my arms do get a bit sore from cocking my mag springer. That is OK, I need the workout. :) With the Gamo Swarm Magnum 10X GEN 2 .22 break barrel, I am sure I could take squirrel's to 80 yards and even more. You do need to be a good shot with them to do that though. Doug in Michigan.

EACH have advantages, but for Apple to Apple accuracy test, possibly RESET rifle on PCP versus just a bolt action cycle

I just purchased a Crosman Shockwave .22 break barrel. i haven't been able to use it yet. You make breaking the barrel look so easy, is it? What is the range for my rifle?

I've been into these two, pcp and break barrel. I had a single shot pcp, gamo (bb).177, and ruger targus .22 before. At present i have a gamo roadster .22 10x gen2. For me break barrel has a lot of advantages vs pcp. You're correct, as long as you have the pellets, you can shoot all day long 24/7 with the break barrel. Break barrel👍👍👍

Don't forget about your scope after the initial gun price and pump either. But you don't need to search for scopes that can handle the double recoil from break barrels especially from the gamo swarm series so 🤷‍♂️

Apple's and oranges. Great video but I would tell people to start with the break barrel. Then move to the PCP. Theirs nothing like a accurate PCP. Nothing like it compared to a break barrel 😉

You cocked that break barrel like it wasn’t anything. The one I have takes some effort . At least 50 lbs of effort LoL. I ordered a .25 caliber and hopefully I’ll enjoy popping some crow .

I think they're both great but I would also say that people could have a lot of fun with a pump up like the Benjamin 392 and 22 caliber but I'd say get all three get a pcps get the pump guns and get the break barrels let's just face it all these air rifles Rock

Hey boss, great video! I've got two break barrel spring rifles and am very inaccurate shooting them both. As a firearms instructor I know that the vast majority of the time its the shooter not the tool. I came her to see a comparison and you did not disappoint. Both my break barrels are spongy triggers and the recoil is pretty stupid for a pellet rifle. Clearly I need practice with them. I have zero issues with any of my AR platforms, hunting rifles etc. How are the decibels between the two platforms? I notice both my break barrel springers are pretty loud even with one being moderated.

The break barrels go back and forward in recoil, I learned quickly to not shoot them like I would a actual rifle, loose grip up front and not shouldered tight against you but have a good grip with trigger hand and good groups are achieved, break barrels will destroy scopes also, have to get them rated for air rifles I found out

I'm new to air rifles but a lot of cartridge, ballistics, and optics experience. Your elevation will derate your break barrel based on air density. Match your actual fpe to pellet weight to optimize velocity. I suggest around 800 fps. 12 fpe isn't bad, 15 goes a long way. 20 fpe if you'll be shooting small hogs and such. I have a Gamo Maxim Swarm, glad I don't have to pump the Magnum :-)
