One thing about the ESPHome doorbell that I like is that it gives smart doorbell functions, but without needing a camera. It makes a nice ,cheap option, especially for people that may already have IP Cameras around the place and not need a camera in the doorbell as well. I should imagine, using ESPHome, it could run quite nicely stand alone, not in Home Assistant, as ESPHome still has a stand alone version that could then go into something else, even Node-Red for those who seem to like that.

Agree 100% - simple but can be extended with existing camera and creative automation. It will work without HA, but didn't try to hookup with NR or MQTT.

I strongly agree with this statement! I hooked an EspHome to my old doorbell. Not only is it cheaper, but it gives as well a solution when the entrance is shared with another house. I have as well a reolink camera which sends a capture or stream when someone rings the doorbell. This is a game changer as we had only a chime at our entrance which we could not hear everywhere. And I have seen video doorbell working a lot less reliably than this solution.

@@BeardedTinker I use Home Assistant, so I would use it within Home Assistant. I am not a fan of Node Red, but I know some like to play with it.

I've heard of some too 🤣 just messing with @notenoughtech as he's really into NR but also knows he's way around it.

I'm interested in videos of projects you're still working on. Letting your audience in on the process is more to me than seeing a fully finished project. I'm here for the engineering as much as the solution.

It's a great product. I too have the reolink doorbell so I made a template button called "doorbell press" that turns on the relay for 200ms the off again so I can all it from an automation when the reolink doorbell is pressed.

Wow, this is a really nice project. I would only miss the extra relay/switch for opening the gate. I really like how easy it is to power the device, though.

We need to check with Marcel on maybe version 3a with 2 relays :)

@@BeardedTinker I could at least have a look into it :) I also want to add an extra "security barrier" as the GPIO is now directly connect and make the esp32 vulnerable. I'm thinking of adding an extra transistor so that it's more repairable after such failure. Also a smaller relay would be nice, considering two of the current would make it quite larger.

How can i use this without a switch but with a physical chime? I have an Aqara G4 video doorbell that runs off of the switch power, but it cannot trigger the manual bell and rather requires a speaker box. Id love to use HA to detect when the Aqara doorbell is pressed and then have an automation to ring the bell once or twice. All of the tutorials ive found include the switch as well.

I made a simpler doorbell press sensor using a Wemos Mini D1 connected to a ZMCT103C Current Transformer. Just pass the doorbell N or L wire through the current transformer. When the doorbell button is pressed, the transformer sends the current value to the Wemos D1. Then make an automation... if doorbell sensor current is above a certain value, for at least 1 second, send notification on phone or trigger doorway camera to take a snapshot of the person at the door and send it as a notification on phone.

i am about to order from marcel, but my doorbell button has a light, why does it say on the site its not supported ?
@BeardedTinker
@BeardedTinker 6 ай бұрын
The light is problem because there is constant flow of electricity and it's "same" as having button pressed all of the time. You would need to replace the button unfortunately.

It should be auto detected. But you can also use Add Integration, select Reolink and add it manually.

@@alphenit nah, I'm sorry - being stupid and not reading the video title :) But again, answer is similar - it should be picked up by HA, and if not, you can add it via Integrations page - ESPHome integration.

I don't see anyone designing projects that use Zigbee module, it seems all projects use Wi-Fi only, that is OK for powered projects but when it comes to battery powered projects Zigbee gives longer battery life? So, any chance of some projects using Zigbee. Good video, very interesting products.
@BeardedTinker
@BeardedTinker Жыл бұрын
I have DIY ZigBee alternative. But since it was a project from Russian web site and some people decided that anything from there is bad, including open source project, haven't done video on it. The biggest issue for ZigBee DIY projects is firmware. There is NO easy way for now to make custom firmware. One option is to buy Dev kit + SDK that costs a LOT of money.. The other is option to use russian tool that creates firmware - free version is limited in capabilities and paid version costs for each device you want to flash (tied to chip I'd). Really would also love to see more ZigBee alternatives

Why not use a shelly 1 in decoupled mode?
@BeardedTinker
@BeardedTinker Жыл бұрын
You could use it - a bit more complex as it requires separate circuit for the bell and additional power for Shelly 1, if I'm not mistaken. Plus it's not working out of box with ESPHome and has no BLE support. But yes, that's also a possibility.
