I've been using these shaders since you posted this video and I am blown away. They have me experiencing a bit of an existential crisis. Over the years I have collected the whole range of original consoles going back to NES, all modded with an ODE and RGB out where possible (in addition to PixelFX HDMI mods where available). I also have a RetroTink 5x for outputting the RGB modded consoles to my LG OLED. Up until six days ago, the 5x with HDR and SlotMask turned on came the closest to a CRT as I could possibly imagine. This isn't the case anymore, now RetroArch with these shaders is absolutely the holy grail I've been looking for since getting into this hobby. And now I have to question why I have all these original consoles. Not to mention the Analogue FPGA consoles I've purchased as well. Sure as a hobbyist and collector it feels great to own these original pieces, but I can now do everything in a single MiniPC and do it better and more perfectly beautiful than all this other stuff. I'm mulling over selling off my collection, which I couldn't possibly have imagined until now.

I couldn't agree more. I´d like to use this shader with the Mega Bezels and reflection, instead of full screen. I understand that would reduce the virtual slotmask and phosphor, but I'd like to try anyways. My goal is to build an arcade machine as faithfull as possible, including screen bezels, and I think these shaders are perfect for that. Is that possible?

Same here, I recently got my Original n64 up and running g because I was craving a more authentic look, but I’ve been clearly using g emulation more and more recently. I’ve been using emulators for almost 25 years at this point but they never used to go E close to what they can do now. It’s hard to argue with the QOL that retroarch and all these standalone emulators provide. Makes it pretty tempting to ditch original hardware.

@@RetroCrisis Thanks a lot. Much if not most of the credit needs to go to MajorPainTheCactus though, who created the groundbreaking Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor shader (and it's equally awesome ReShade port) and is also responsible for adding HDR support to RetroArch. Much thanks must also go to Guest.R and Hyllian who's shaders are also in use in the preset pack. A couple things I'd like to mention though. First is that it's important for users to select the appropriate setting which matches their "Display's Subpixel Layout". It is also imperative that users follow the readme and the Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor setup instructions especially when it comes to setting their Peak Luminance and Paper White values in the Shader Parameters. Also, the shader itself does work on non-HDR displays once they are bright enough, for example most cellphone screens and many laptop screens, however my presets are all optimized for running it in HDR mode. Your Google Pixel 6A handled its duties exceptionally! Wish I could have seen even more "CRT-Like" footage with those bright, rich "phosphors"! Keep up the great work!

Its interesting how just by looking at it in this video, the biggest complain I've had about most CRT shaders -- thick black bars in-between scanlines -- simply does not exist, as the shadow mask seemingly uniformizes the picture It would be cool to see some gameplay of different game using this filter (I'm especially biased towards seeing 16bit sonic in motion, as I know for a fact that a great shader will make his quills' curvature 100% round, and with no visible pixels whatsoever)

To add to this, sometimes Core Provided does not provide the best aspect ratio for the core so you might have to try 4:3 or Custom/Config aspect ratios to fine tune things. This is something I've been working on. I've found that an aspect ratio of 1.24 works really nice for SNES content using BSNES. Integer Scale Off and On can also make a difference as well.

It looked really bad for me on a 4k tv sitting fairly close above my desk until I adjusted the "Resolution" parameter in the Shader Parameters. the lowest tvl number at default was too low. Looked much better when setting that higher. was difficult to tell the difference past the 2nd number, but the first was def too low for me. i feel like the whole ui retroarch uses to apply shaders could use an easy mode with just a list of the actually useful presets without having to search through a folder heirarchy. maybe a screenshot to demonstrate what its supposed to look like. i just want to know what the newest best presets are in the app without having keep up with random forum posts for news. now i need to sit down and figure out how to use the megabezel with these presets.

I think it's great that these options exist for people who want them, but for me, it's about image quality, you can't emulate hardware quality, display IQ and performance is a physical trait, but what you can do is get a really good quality display, the best modern display for playing retro games with good IQ is Plasma, but those are not in production any more so the next best is RGB-OLED, it has to be RGB-OLED as those have the important RGB-Stripe subpixel layout like Sony/Mitsubishi Trinitron and Panasonic/JVC/etc slot-mask CRTs have, all you need then for retro games to look good is a simple scanline generator (SGL), hardware SLG units produce authentic, very accurate vertical & horizontal scanlines, on a nice RGB-OLED with an SLG, your retro games will look incredible, obviously not as good as a mid to high-end CRT, but good enough for those who don't have access to a CRT, using shaders really won't increase IQ and in fact imo only hurt IQ, you also need BFI (black-frame-generation) or ULMB 2 or other strobing tech, RGB-OLED+SLG-BFI is the next best thing (other than Plasma) to a CRT, for image quality enthusiasts, this will be a much better option than using shaders. An RGB-OLED with 240hz BFI and an SLG will look much closer to an 800-1000 TVL BVM, using a CRT shader is only useful for trying to emulate low quality CRTs, such as composite or RF low-end consumer grade CRTs, another fantastic option for a high-end BVM alternative is a CRT monitor, to get the 1000 TVL BVM image quality and look all you need is an SLG, a CRT monitor and SLG is the highest quality display you can get for retro games, CRT monitors also have perfect motion, zero input latency and zero video lag. Hopefully someday, a company, perhaps RetroTink's maker Mike will produce the perfect legacy CRT replacement monitor, a nice 21" to 25" 4:3 RGB-OLED with a curved bubble style glass front, perfect raster-scan emulation for zero input latency or close as it can be, built in SLG & BFI, HDR tone mapping emulation, support for RGB-SCART/S-Video/Component/Composite/etc, multi integer resolutions, DRC (direct-ram-control) for zero video lag, barcode scanner for scanning and loading games from the physical box instead of trunching through long lists of pirated digital ROMs, maybe even a built-in FPGA for something like MiSTer or MARS, option for optical media connection, that would be one hell of a retro display.

What you might really need to do is follow the setup instructions in the first post of the Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor thread. They're also inside the Shader Parameters on the left side. This tells users to get the Peak Luminance Value for their display from RTINGS then to set the Paper White values according to what looks best to them. You can use a game with a white background or the 240p Test Suite to assist in this regard. I use a setting of about 630 nits for both for my display but it can go higher. If your display's maximum brightness is too low then that would limit what you can achieve with this shader and it might only look good in a dark room.

Also, Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor comes with several default Shader Presets, how do they look for you? You might have to set your Peak Luminance and your Paper White Luminance according to the Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor setup instructions. You're not supposed to interfere with any shader passes. Are you sure you're loading the correct preset or that some other preset isn't being auto loaded?

Thanks for your reply. My HDR calibration had been reset for some reason, it's looking much better. It's an awesome shader but it also reminds me of how much we've become used to sitting close to large displays. The masking only really works if enough distance is being applied. A full 4:3 area of a 42" widescreen which I'm using as a desktop monitor is around 32" and I'm sitting less than 1 meter from it. That's very different from my old Sony Trinitron 29" I had as a kid from which I sat over 2 meters from. So yeh, these shaders require to be handled the same way as a proper CRT now that they''ve become so close to the real thing. Thanks again!@@CyberLabStudio

You're Welcome. If you sit close to a large screen and find the phosphors a bit too chunky, you can change the "Resolution" parameter in the Shader Parameters to a higher number, for example 600TVL. It should look even more realistic once you're sitting close enough. There was a user who tried setting the "Display's Resolution" to 8K then the "Resolution" to 800TVL and they said they preferred that to the 300TVL because it equated to 400TVL so you can also try that. @@Kaztrofy

is it going to look good if my monitor peak hdr brightness is only 450 nits?
@CyberLabStudio
@CyberLabStudio 9 ай бұрын
It might. It's not only about brightness but also contrast ratio and black levels when it comes to these things. If you have a lower peak brightness it might look better in a darker or less bright room. Since these are so new, why don't you test them out and share your results? Be sure to go into Shader Parameters and adjust the "Display's Subpixel Layout" to the one that matches your display. It is also important to adjust the Peak Luminance and Paper White Luminance values to the settings that match your display. So in your case the Peak Luminance would be 450 cd/m². While the Paper White Luminance should be adjusted to what looks good to you, preferably using a white background or you can even use the 240p Test Suite.

I've noticed there's a huge jump in brightness in Retroarch when pressing the Space key (to fast forward). I have no idea why other than the bright icon in the upper right corner prohibiting the ABL on my OLED C2. Is there a way around this except turning it off in the service menu? These advanced shaders really could use all the brightness my screen can put out.

Have you adjusted your Peak Luminance and Paper White Luminance values according to the Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor setup instructions? You might get a little more brightness headroom just by doing that. The settings in the preset pack are calibrated for my display but to get optimal results you can fine tune the calibration using those two settings within the Shader Parameters.

Technically you don't really need to do any HDR Calibration using and Windows Calibration tool since the Shader itself has calibration steps if you follow the readme file or instructions in the first post of the Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor thread. There are even instructions in the Shader Parameters themselves. You need to set your Peak Luminance, which you can get from RTINGS and also set your Peak Paper White Luminance to whatever looks best to you. You can use a game with a white screen or the 240p test suite to assist. Lastly you really need to set the "Display's Subpixel Layout" to whatever matches your display. The settings in my preset pack are geared towards LG OLED TVs. They should also work on BGR LED/LCDs.

If your normal 4K TV (or any other display) is bright enough, it can run this shader in SDR mode. The setup instructions are slightly different though. See the included readme file or open up a preset and view the instructions inside the Shader Parameters. Other than that, I have several other preset packs which are geared toward non-HDR displays.
