Most Requested Cheap Paint Review! MEEDEN Watercolor 48 Pans/ 24 Tubes review & comparison *Affiliate links used n this post.
About once a week I have a viewer ask me about these Meeden paints. amzn.to/2Jd8nXj they also have a 24 tube watercolor set amzn.to/2Ve6z7F
And of course, what started the obsession into Meeden paints was the gorgeous Watercolor Wheel set I raved about last year amzn.to/2Lj7pve I had so much fun painting with those watercolors last summer and they were a bargain at so when MEEDEN emailed me and asked if I wanted to try their other watercolors I was happy to oblige:)
Review of the Watercolor Wheet set can be found here: • Are These Paints Worth...
Review of MEEDEN 48 half pans (also available in 12 and 24 pan sets) amzn.to/2GYZa2d
Pros:
Price
Colors rewet very easily
Rich vibrant colors
Very Transparent for a budget watercolor
*Good lightfast ratings according to paint wrappers (however the pinks and browns are rated equally so I doubt they are truly accurate, take them with a grain of salt *=poor and ****=excellent rating scale)
The paint is extruded and very concentrated. If you find you don't like the paint you can easily remove the bricks of paint and use the tin and half pans.
Colors glaze better than most student paints.
These paints lift well with a medium stiff brush, water, and paper towel blotting
The color selection is nice with a couple samey blues and pinks.
Cons:
This set lacks a good Ultramarine blue which I think is essential to any painting palette. I'd also like a warm red that is not as orange as their Scarlet.
There is no room in the box to add extra pans
No pigment info
Bottom Line: I was surprised at how good these paints were. I think they are as good if not better than the Mungyo 48 half pan set that costs more. You can glaze without lifting but you can lift colors if you want. The paint is vibrant and transparent. It's everything you want in a budget watercolor. At this price you can beat it. Just plan on adding an ultramarine blue for a full range. Learn more here: amzn.to/2H1K7WF
Meeden 24 watercolor Tubes Review
Pros:
Price $10 on Amazon amzn.to/2GZT4Q9
Great selection of vibrant colors, all of the basic colors you need to get started are here.
Non-toxic
No smell (often cheap tube watercolors have a weird odor)
Dry down well in a palette (most budget paints crack and fall out of palettes if dry)
Colors mix well (however sediment from added fillers are apparent in mixes)
Cons:
Colors are streaky when used straight from the tube due to fillers and extenders. They work much better if you let them dry in a palette before using.
You can see grainy sediment in some paints when you mix them.
No pigment info
Bottom Line:
Get these for your kids. The colors are bright and they can learn the basics of painting, brush control and mixing with no downsides. They are non-toxic and do not smell. They will use up this set before they would notice any of the limitations I mentioned. They are great paints for the price but I'd recommend upgrading colors as they are used up so you only end up buying colors you will actually use. I'd teach with these paints.
I also shared the Meeden Deluxetin. It holds 24 half pans and there is room in the center for brushes, pencils etc. It seems like full pans should fit in the center but the ones I have don't. Honestly, it is a bit pricey at $30. I think you are better off to get their 48 half pan set and remove the paint for that price as I prefer that tin and the paint didn't bead up. You can learn more here: amzn.to/2LlwTbt *mine did not come with half pans but this listing does. I'll use this more and see what I think before I truly give my opinion on.

I am always VERY wary and cynical of KZfaq "reviews".....especially, if the company provided the product to the reviewer. After watching your channel for about a year, I just have to tell you how much I appreciate your integrity and transparency in your product reviews. Thank you so VERY much for helping a new-ish (about a year) watercolor artist navigate the prismatic jungle that is watercolor supplies. This viewer will always watch for your reviews to educate myself on the industry. Again.....many, many, many thanks!!

I love that you’re getting more critical of the cheap watercolors. There are so many different brands now that are very similar and I see them and want them. But then you are here to remind me that the Jane Davenport are about the same quality (but Jane provides pigment information). So thank you for saving my wallet and providing quality content and trusted reviews. :)

I have the Superior set, and they are incredibly lightfast! Left swatches in the window for months and only that pale blue faded. I bought the Meeden 48, and have been pleased. They were less lightfast, and some colors were almost duplicates, but not surprising for a budget set. I was interested in the Arteza 60 set, but didn't want to risk more duplicates. Have also seen comments that the tubes of the Aeteza don't work well in the pans.

I love your watercolor reviews! I bought the ShinHan set of 30 watercolors you have reviewed, and I LOVE them! my only complaint is that there isn't what I call a true red. Can you recommend a tube paint that isn't an orangy red, please?

I have been using the Meeden 24 pan set for a few months now and I am fairly happy with it for a journal set. It easily equals my Tombow brush pens and will probably outlast my lifetime! I was skeptical too, but they easily beat Arteza on all fronts so far. I am still filling in my master pallette tube by tube, but it is a solid knock-around set! Thanks for the side by side review. Bought the tubes with a pan and tin set for a Christmas gift and it looks like a good way to go for training wheels.

Meeden is a Chinese company that made and based these watercolours on the Pantone Colour Matching System. Each paint colour has a number which is its PMS color code…for example the Violet colour is 2583C. Unfortunately this just does not translate well over into this world of watercolours and oil paints where the colours of paints are based on actual physical pigment colours and not the digital world that works on the CMYK process of colour mixing. Their watercolours do have good bright colour and work great if you aren’t actually learning colour theory as an art student, as this set does not have the correct single hue primaries used to learn colour theory and how to mix colours.

Despite seeing this review, I saw the tubes on sale and ordered them and I have to admit that I love them and now they're my favorite paints. I got the fan watercolors and hated them but I love these tubes and use them to refill my cheaper palettes. The formula could have been changed in the past two years but I got mine a few weeks ago and they rewet so well (almost as easily as my Paul Rubens) and they mix cleanly though there is sometimes sedimentation on the palette. I mainly use them in my sketchbook and I plan to buy more once these are finished. I do agree that the tubes paints are better used after they've been dried. The color comes out smoother

The brackets in the last palette are upside-down. Flip them around, and they should fit in between the small wall and the pans, to hold the pans into place. Also, if you like those kinds of palettes, check out the Italian company FOME, from which a lot of paint companies brand palettes. For example, they manufacture those small "bijou" palettes, with and without the flask.

Hi Margaret, I tried the Turner watercolors when jerry's had the 18 tubes for 19 dollars. They dried down without cracking, the colors are vibrant, except for the Mayan colors are weak and and hard to rewet. Transparency is good where it should be, not hard to rewet, some movement but not a lot, little color shift if any at all. Some granulation bit not like DS primate. I'm very happy with them and love using them. I made an M Graham/ Turner pallet because I like them more than some M Graham colors. 🙊

You need to turn the rails over on that heavyweight palette. The double edge should be up and the rail slips between the pans and the ridge the rails are currently sitting over. They pack them that way so they stay in place while shipping. I was confused by a smaller palette like that too. Once turned over It will then hold the pans securely. It is exactly like the italian made Fome paletttes, I wish I could order that from the Uk but Meeden is not offering it here.

@@reneaclark7689 , good thing you don't like them cuz I tore Amazon apart looking for them yesterday and could not find that blasted box. Even the one I put in my wish list was 13 bucks, like, why would I do that? So it must have been a special and I just didn't see that part, I'm sorry for misleading you about that. The Meeden box is what I was getting for my half pans that are all running loose, homemade paints and little additions here and there also condensing my crafty sets of Prima and Jane Davenport watercolors. But that still left me with what to do with my White Nights, which turns out I would need another 2 boxes to contain them, when I was suddenly hit with a idea. Not gonna call it brilliant yet, just keeping it chill for now haha, but...... drum rolll.......a cookie sheet. I didn't say brilliant idea remember :) I found a big roll of super strength magnetic self stick.......magnet hahaha while looking for that stupid paint box, cut it to fit the pans and stick them to the cookie sheet and hang it on the wall. It will be perfect for me. Just take down the colors you are going to work with, maybe put them in the , now, empty box and paint away. When you are done and the pans aren't dripping wet stick them back in place. So, for ME it's a brilliant idea, but in reality it might just be a idea 😊
