Nigeria in 98 and Romania in 94 were strong teams. Maybe Spain and Argentina were mild favorites on the paper in those matches, but the defeats were not surprises at all. Spain in 98 wasn't even half the team as Spain around 2010. Maradona in 94 was a grandpa and there was a Carpathian Maradona Hagi on the other side.

Romania had Hagi, Dimitrescu and Popescu, they had a nice team back them, competitive. Nigeria was one of the strongest if not the strongest team african team. Solid too

Switzerland and Saudi Arabia caused a big upset by winning their opening matches then went on to bottle it and could not get out of group stage.

Spains defeat was good for me, at this wc i was betting all the money on spain and after that game the odds raised from 4.5 to 6. 98 was not really a surprise, nigeria had a great team in the 90s, they were the raining olympic champions.

Disagree with Nigeria v Spain, Romania v Argentina and France v Denmark. Before the 1998 World Cup, Nigeria were unlucky in the Round of 16 in 1994 against runners-up Italy (smashing semi-finalists Bulgaria in the group stage), and won the Olympic tournament in 1996. In the run-up to the World Cup, many considered them secret favourites. Meanwhile, Spain‘s squad lacked unity and cohesion. In fact, Nigeria‘s 1-4 defeat to Denmark was actually more surprising. Also, Romania in 1994 had a squad with many players in top European leagues, and had beaten Colombia in the group stage (another team considered as a dark horse contender for the title), while Argentina lost steam after Maradona was out. France‘s defeat to Senegal 2002 was more surprising than their defeat to Denmark, as France had the best defense and three topscorers in European leagues. I‘d also include Cameroon v Argentina in 1990, and Saudi Arabia v Belgium in 1994.

Italy was *defeated* by Costa Rica in a stunning *upset* ….. Italy was *robbed* by South Korea in a stunning *sabotage* (by the referees). There’s a big difference between those two matches. Costa Rica left Italy *heartbroken* while South Korea left Italy *furious* - and justifiably so.

I dont count 2002. It was corrupted and paid. Thats why South Korea got to semifinal. Just check their matches. Almost every clean tackle on Korean player was whistled as a foul and many red cards were given
