According to a new CBS News poll, 72% of registered voters say President Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health to serve after the debate with former President Donald Trump. CBS News' Anthony Salvanto and Weijia Jiang join with more.

Don't worry about it. Presidents always have a bad first debate historically. This is a whole much ado about nothing. Biden clearly won the debate, almost by virtue of the fact that he's not Trump, but also on the points, like the economy, health care, foreign relations, democracy, rule of law. Thinking otherwise is handwringing. And it's understandable handwringing, but it won't carry weight, as this election is a referendum on Trump's unfitness for the office, and Biden is the avatar for the pro-America movement.

Well, he's not going to lose and we absolutely shouldn't nominate someone else. The incumbent advantage is too great to throw it away because people are handwringing about Joe Biden at the debate. This won't be a story in a few days/weeks, the story is going to be about Trump starting an insurrection and now the court opening a lane for him to be immune because of that.

@@J-S.P Absolutely not. Splitting the party would be a disaster. Biden is by far the best candidate, coming off a strong four year term, versus one of the worst presidents in history. Anyone who is lost in the sauce, go follow the "Keys to the White House." It's a model for predicting elections, and switching Biden would be a disaster by it's determination.

@@45twice Yes. Presidents historically do poorly in the first debate. Either which way, a debate is immaterial to his performance, something we all know and have seen over 4 years of a successful presidency. More importantly, debates aren't world beaters. They are immaterial, cannon-fodder for these sorts of discussions, but this isn't the real topic, it's just people venting their anxieties. The election is about Joe's good governance, and more importantly, a referendum on Trump as an adjudicated insurrectionist.

Off base. Joe clearly outperformed Trump. For people who want to handwring about Biden, yeah this is an easy and understandable reaction, but it doesn't matter in the long run. The fundamentals are still the fundamentals, and Biden's record on governance for 4 years speaks louder than a debate. We all know this. And critically, something else we all know, is that everything Trump said on the stage is a lie, which brings us to the main contention in this election-- it's a referendum on Trump and his insurrection. Again, we all know this.

Yeah, no. I understand why people who aren't keyed in might think this, but it's simply inaccurate. Biden's done a great job over the past three years, any analysis of his record shows this, but we all know it so there's no point in rehashing it. Further, this election is about Trump. Yeah, we find ourselves in a superficially strange moment, but at the end of the day, Americans see the election for what it's for-- an adjudicated insurrectionist running against an avatar for the pro-America movement. Joe Biden is simply the vessel through which we protect America.

Biden gets up early and works all day. Trump stayed in his private quarters until nearly noon, and knocked off about three. Ask anyone who worked for him. Never read, knows nothing about anything, thinks people in the military are stupid for serving. I’ll never understand what people see in Trump; bleached combover, pancake makeup, oversized suits to give him shoulders and hide his gut), lifts in his shoes, even though he’s 6’2” (but claims to be 6’4”, 230). Here's why Trump won the debate. Someone said about the debate, "He's brutal and so confident! I have no idea what he is saying it true but I'm talking about the skills. That's what debates are about all about. It's not about facts at all." That person was not talking about Trump's performance in the June 2024 debate. That person said that over a decade ago and was talking about Biden's performance in the 2012 VP debate against Paul Ryan. So when Clyburn says Joe Biden has never been show horse, he was in 2012. When Democratic surrogates say how do you fact check all Trump's lies and lay out a case for America, it's impossible. Go watch the 2012 debate where Biden said everything Paul Ryan said was untrue, malarkey, could not wait to cut Ryan off and say this or that was false, all with a huge grin on his face. Was everything Ryan saying false? On 2012 Biden's style and skills alone, I would say yes. But who knows, because as someone said over a decade ago, debates are not about facts at all.

It's the Democrats' turn to step up to the plate, and provide a "profile in courage, " something the Republicans failed to do after January 6. For all their ideological differences, what Biden and Trump have in common is that neither one knows when to step aside.
