Here's some explainations for some of the unused sprites -Kumatora was originally planned to be the seventh Magypsy, but they choose Fassad instead -There's a theory saying that the unused boss backgrounds for the "GYIGAS"/Claus/Masked Man also referenced as "Lucas's Nightmare" was meant to represent how Lucas saw Claus or the mental states of Claus as the Masked Man as the final boss progressed, instead of flashbacks -Porky Minch's original fate was to supposedly die in a slow and painful way after he got defeated instead of trapping himself in the Absolutely Safe Capsule

What if this was a "SAD END" or something, where Claus never comes to his senses and becomes a being similar to Giygas, maybe weaker, and as the scrapped kindness stats involved killing or not certain enemies, maybe in this battle Lucas really had to kill what remained of Claus, leading to a depressed Lucas pulling the last needle and something bad happening.

Mother 3's cut content was always fascinating to me with weird sprites and the story changes and etc. The worst offender is eb64, man I still want to have that version.

I think the "Happy End" sprite could be used for 2 things. 1. This one is less likely than the other, but I'll say it anyway. I think it could be used when you beat the masked man and Lucas pulls the needle, But if you fail the fight, then there is a "Sad End" of sorts because the masked man gets to pull it. 2. I think the most likely reason is that if you got enough kindness points then you/Lucas would have a good heart and when pulling the final needle, something good would happen, and maybe getting no kindness points would cause there to be a bad ending and only a few would be the normal ending? I don't know, this is all speculation, but I think it's a good theory.

i've done some testing in my free time with the kindness stat, and its actual effect is that every point increases the potency of healing psi AND healing items used by the character by 1%. there is no healing rng outside of battles, so you can test this easily by using any item that restores 100 HP. it doesn't affect peculiar cheese though...

12:30 That song and the weird unused claus backgrounds at 24:04 are from unused parts of of the final masked man fight which was supposed to have a nightmare-like segment if I remember this correctly. 20:29 is the beta absolutely safe capsule that functioned more like an escape pod that was initially supposed to malfunction as he's escaping in it and fatally wound him.

23:54 I think originally Duster was supposed to be too afraid of the Dragon and turned against the group to stop them. There is this unused cutscene where Duster was upset that no one seemed to care what would happen to the world when the last needle was pulled.

Considering they weren't really known for their musicianship, it's amazing how distinctive their playing is that such you can immediately hear that this is a loving pastiche of their style. i swear, consumables lucas uses are also effected by kindness, i remember having pork noodles filling my inventory once, and i had them heal 81 hp with lucas using them, once i got the kindness stat to raise, they healed 82 hp

as someone who spent an absurd amount of time goofing around with mother 3 debug stuff as a kid, im genuinely surprised there's MORE debug content i didnt know about

Great video my guy mother 3 is my favorite game of all time!

For those who don’t know the original time skip was 10 years and the game was going to have 12 chapters instead of 8. And while not confirmed I think the reason chapter 7 is so long is because they crammed a lot of events from those cut 4 chapters into it. Lucas and Claus were also both 7 pre time skip which would make them 17 post time skip making them the oldest of the MOTHER protagonists

If you're gonna blow up small sprites to fill the whole video, you should make sure it's nearest neighbor scaling instead of becoming a blurry mess

I think the reason there's a cut Duster enemy is because you were originally meant to fight the members of the DCMC at the end of chapter 4, but the battle was replaced with the stone sheet clippers sequence

Its crazy how mother 3 is still one of the best jrpgs ever despite its heavy development troubles and large amount of cut content. Theres a part of me that thinks it might’ve been for the best seeing stuff like that text that implies there may have been multiple planned endings at some point. I think the games singular ending is very important to its identity and themes.

My theory on the unmasked Clause animations is that the happy ending would allow to live and all the unused flashback cutscences of him, Lucas and the others, were all related to it and the remix of the love theme was also related to that version of the battle. To add to this the extra hat off Flint animations are probably related as well I imagine that if you had se kindness points then Flint would have joined the gang earlier and been the party during the final battle and the presence of him and Lucas would have most likely been what caused Claus to start remembering more and I now think that the "mom" forest fire cutscences weren't for the intro but were also part of Claus's flashbacks and he would remember the last thing she said to him which would cause him to take off his mask and stop fighting ending the fight then Flint would start talking to him in cutscence form until porky tries to shoot Claus and Flint instinctively would jump in the way protecting him hence the lying on the ground sprite his last word would have probably just been "I'm so happy I finally found you Claus." Which Claus and Lucas would just start to cry and then the ghost mom would appear and start getting mad at Flint using her power to bring him back while yelling at him until disappearing when he says he's sorry and she's right. Then the porky boss would probably have the five party team of Lucas, Claus, Bones, Kumatora, and Duster. I also think the sunset area with Claus and Lucas is actually part of the happy ending like you go outside and find Claus sitting on the cliff and them he gets up and follows you back inside where the family finally sits down for dinner and the credits have the unused screen shots added in until ending with the "Happy Ending" text.

Today I learned that a game that was never officially localized or translated outside of Japan not only has multiple versions, but also that the versions have subtle changes like not having Bronson playable. Like, it doesn't even matter, Bronson takes a page out of Mother 2 Pokey's handbook and does nothing in battle ever. This is all so loony I'd think Itoi set up the whole thing.

12:30 The soundtrack I downloaded (can’t remember if official site or khinsider) calls this song Gyiyg’s/Giygas’s theme, implying he was meant to return in some form. Maybe his incorporeal corpse is the dark dragon and he needs a heart passed on to him to make him choose whether to remember Maria and protect humanity, possibly saving his body too or follow his people’s old orders and damn them then remain as almighty idiotic darkness? It would explain why the Lithosphere Cave where Fassad’s needle is looks like a black electric version of the cave of the past with scary music to match. (cave of the future?) The slowed down DCMC numbers chant can be easily mistaken for someone groaning “help…luc..as…” which could be taken to mean Gyiyg is coming back to life via the needle removals and is somehow aware enough on some level to beg Lucas to be the one to pull the last one.

They could just reduce the animal abuse and reimagine the drag queens to be burly fairies. Some fans may only settle for the original vision but that's not going to happen for this localization, just play the ROM hack. I'd actually prefer these changes.

Nice video, i never knew about the others debug rooms or about the unused enemies in the earthbound 64, but why did you let some sprites and animations looking like a jpeg compressed 3 times being shown in a potato computer? Does making it bigger to not look like that so hard to do?
