Last year, more than 2,200 British Columbians died from toxic overdoses, according to the BC Coroner Service.
Ann Marie Sexton’s son, Chad, was one of the many people who died in 2021. Now she's fighting to help her firstborn enter recovery.

This is breaking my heart. I just happened upon this video. And there is a wonderful kind woman with a red hat and black coat that says Eastman on the back of it. I am in tears as she is helping my son. He is wearing the green coat at the beginning of the video. I live in Ontario. I feel hopeless and have tried to get my son off the street many many times. It is nice to know that there are beautiful people who help the most vulnerable. Thank you nice lady for being kind to my son. May God keep you and everyone safe.

I think all addicts, especially dealers should be sent to prison. This would be good for the addicts because they will at least have a better chance of recovering from their addictions. If the addicts are not mentally suitable for prison, they then should be forcefully held in a mental rehab program until they can show they're able to function properly. I know many will find this offensive but this will save a lot of lives, so if you care about people remaining alive, you should be supporting solutions like the ones I presented🙏

I am tired of comments like yours, a person who most likely has a wonderful life, no addictions, no money problems, nice family etc smacking down the downtrodden instead of supporting the addicted to get off drugs and get the help they need for recovery. One of my siblings , an addict, overdosed and died here, behind the Patricia Hotel. The other addict in my family ' made the choice' to do recovery; she is a model citizen now, and helping many others. Addiction is tough, but it is a CHOICE. Addiction lures people there. Unaffordable housing leads people there. You need a reality check. How about going down to the east side and talking to some of the people down there. They’ll tell you their story. Coming from other provinces to Vancouver, trying to work, make ends meet to pay the rent, rent is too high, they end up homeless, and either selling drugs or get wrapped up in using them. And the provincial govt only looks at temporary solutions rather than permanent ones to help the homeless. No plan to get them off the street only to give the a “safe spot” to continue using, that isn’t a solution, they need to get them into housing, get them the help they need to deal with addiction, then move past it, deal with other issues, help them find work and then be independent providers for themselves.

@@Liberal_From_Prairies689 Sorry but this is a common excuse used. The reality is that most people who take these kinds of drugs have serious mental problems and the drugs only make their situations worse. Instead of working, looking forward to retirement, taking walks in the park or traveling and hiking adventures, you spend your spare time fighting someone who is not themselves half the time. Then the system will help them. Just watching the video the thinking errors are clear. It's not his fault, it's other people's actions that caused it. It's always someone else's fault. His friends, the hospital, drug dealers. Not it isn't. Until the pair of them admit it's their fault, there will be no recovery.

What makes people want to give up on themselves, do drugs, commit violence on themelves, waste away and foreclose on their lives. I don't get the attraction to self degredation. Reminds me of Plato's cave dwellers.

Cry me a F-ing River and take some personal accountability and responsibility for your actions and your outcome ... I could've been one of these people when I was 16, but I refuse to lose, I fought, scrapped, dumpster dive, starved, and worked hard for what I have and is still fighting and scrapping by now, the fight with life NEVER Ends until you dye, and that's how you're defeated or throw in the towel. No one give me nothing or showed my sympathy ... I earn what I have.

Imagine the government putting all of the money used on de-stigmatizing drugs, harm reduction and "safe supply" and putting it into treatment?

All the relatives of all the victims of China's drugs, had cell phones that are chock full of names, numbers and addresses. VPD never look, but the families do. It seems the VPD have left the ball in our court. Let's go get 'em.
