Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey... It feels like we’ve been here before; the series five finale near-promised a conclusion to the long-running “who is H?” saga and then left us on tenterhooks for almost two years. But after last night’s explosive episode, the ‘fourth man’ was finally revealed to be Ian Buckells who we exclusively have in the studio! Nigel Boyle will be here to expose their crimes, reveal what it was like keeping their identity a secret and whether or not this is the final series of Line of Duty.

It wasn’t the ending I expected, but I agree with what Craig Parkinson said on his Line Of Duty Podcast, you can see real strength in Kate, Ted and Steve when they go down in the lift, having been reunited for the “final” time and the way Jed has left the story of our favourite trio, suggests that this may not be the end. Yes AC-12 have been disbanded and “definately” weakened, but I think the phrase, “watch this space” comes to mind! 🧐🔎

The worst ending would have been an overblown, unrealistic, crazy ending where they chase this larger than life villain. While I can understand why a lot of people found this finale underwhelming, I personally saw it coming and think it leaves the series perfectly open for more. Of course, he is not the top dog. He even says as much really. The OCGs have always been in charge. How on earth do you control a load of crazy nutjobs like Ryan anyway. I believe with time, people will look at this episode in a different way, especially if we get a seventh series. I personally don't think this was one of the best seasons and I also think the H storyline should have been cleared up in Season 5, but hey, it is what it is. Some people need to calm down a bit because it is becoming toxic and I don't think any of the actors, directors, or anyone involved with the show deserve that level of criticism for one slip at the end. I think most people are just salty because they didn't see it coming.

@@shadsk1837 It is not a loose end.Buckells make's it crystal clear that the OCG were acting on their own in a lot of cases.So, they simply did what they always do when there is a rat.Buckells would have been the one to share that info but he then has to put on an act in the prison to keep his identity as H hidden from the OCG.Think about it.He has much more protection and power if they don't know his identity.

Personally I really liked the ending, glad they focused on the AC-12 team rather than H and the OCG because after all, it has been about their teamwork and friendship since day 1

Who noticed Ted’s reaction just before ending the interview with Buckells? He was reacting to Buckells mouthing something silently or nodding his head. It’s clear that at the very least Osborne was involved with Gail Bella’s murder and more than likely a lot more.

Looking at how much he was shaking and scared when Lakewell got killed in front of him I'd say there was definitely people above him. Possibly Osborne, because he was definitely corrupt.

He's not H, like others have mentioned he was the OCG's glorified errand boy, targeted by them because he was considered incompetent in his position as an officer of the law and therefore easily corruptible, if anything he was similar to the Caddy, just managing bigger operations such as the Eastfield Depot raid. Truly, the current 'H' is likely to be somebody of higher calibre, shrewd, calculated and with a history of corruption, Osbourne fits the likely profile. Let's not forget that the mantle of 'H' or 'the fourth man' goes all the way back to Fairbank, who was carrying that torch before passing it down to Tommy hunter and so forth. It's only assumed that Buckells is the last and only remaining fourth man.

There’s a glaring hole. When he was in prison someone was killed in front of him and was told this what happens to snitches. So it’s not him, he’s taking the fall for the real “H”

Or that was just an elaborate act. Remember none of the OCG in the prison knew he was the fourth man. He had to pull that act to divert suspicion. That Lee Banks guy may well have been in on it.

@@cviasco8571 Yes, because they thought he was just another OCG stooge.He acted all scared to keep his identity as H hidden from them.It is made clear that everyone in the OCG has been communicating with a phantom in the police force none of them apart from the other 3 top dogs:Hilton, Tommy and the Caddy knew. This move wasn't intended to send a message to anyone.He was simply keeping his act up. I disagree that this is such a glaring hole.

it really wasn't that bad, sure it was a little underwhelming, however they finished all the storylines, they wrapped it up nicely,, I do think it was quite clever the reveal of H not really being anyone, did want more action though, despite it being a tad underwhelming it was nicely concluded . Pluss the acting especially by Adrian was amazing. I did like how the final shot was them going over all the previous characters like Roz, Lindsay and the final shot bringing it full circle with Gates's photo on top was a nice touch. Clever and intuitive but a little disappointing. 7.5/10

Plot holes. I could have believed buckles was H if he turned out to be ‘acting incompetent’ and there was a big investigation or raid to discover it, but the fact wee Chloe solved it from her desk based on a spelling mistake is very disappointing

@@CuntyMcCunter I don' think there was a 'main guy' anymore. They stated a number of times during the show that they were looking for a man who was 'previously wrongly called H and now referred to as the fourth man'. If you tie that in with the fact that both Jo Davidson and Buckells said that Tommy Hunter previously ran the show but, since he died, the groups broke up into separate OCGs. I think Buckells was just a go-between between the separate OCGs, fixing things when they needed him to. That could also explain why he was so nervous when they killed Jimmy Lakewell in his cell - He's not really in charge of anything and just does whatever the OCGs want him to do and takes his cut from any profits but could still be taken out at anytime.

Initially thought that was a bit disappointing, but I think it was very clever to make the ordinary, bumbling Buckles the mystery H. Excellent episode. The ending means there's enormous scope for another series. Our Ted, thanks be to God NOT H, was n't a happy bunny and will fight his enforced retirement and maybe become the English Poirot?! Kate and Steve could have a romance?? There could be flashbacks to Buckles nasty side?? And SURELY we need to see the downfall of smug Carmichael!!

Pretty much my thoughts too. Although I hope Kate and Steve definAtely do not get together. We don't see enough male and female leads in tv/film that are just friends. Usually they get together in the end or one has a crush on the other or whatever. I'd like to see these remain as mates. I like the "alright" greeting they always give each other. Something mates do.

Maybe hoped for suave villian not a mercenary slacker who mocks duty. Impression in interview "Don't care!" about any consequence. But that is beauty of twist. Audience are 🥴😠 initially then digest clues from Series 1 onwards. Symbolism with reality is troubling to put it mildly. Dismissal of regulations is in plain sight. Apathy is our greatest enemy. For all involved - writer, actors & all crew - please take a bow. Overall celebrate talent we have. Thank you.

They really spoiled the finale. Not just because it ended with a whimper, but the bit that annoyed me was the switch in the prison van. That was obviously done just to surprise the viewers. There is no way that Steve and Kate would have been in that van with only hand guns when the OCG had automatic weapons. And why did the OCG just give up against them? They would have fought their way out of it and killed AC12 officers easily. This is such a far fetched scenario.

He is merely a cog in the wheel of corruption and not "H". He's not a criminal mastermind and hasn't really got the stomach for it. He just does what he is told and goes along with things. Think back to how he behaved when Jimmy Lakewell was murdered in prison...

Either this was a double bluff and the next series will reveal the real truth OR this was the absolutely worst ending imaginable. I say imaginable with severe irony because anyone believing that the Buckles character was capable of everything that occurred over all the series is barking mad.

Was extremely disappointed with this ending! I was sure that Hastings was H. The last show was probably the most uneventful of the series. We want an explosive ending as we have invested so much in this show.

H is the embodiment of not just the 4 people, Hastings' 50 grand OCG money, Arnott's sleeping around with witnesses such as Steph Corbett and DI Denton, Fleming's cover-up shooting of Pilkington, they're all police corruption.
