Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress First Ride Review
www.revzilla.com/common-tread/...
Like a maverick starship at the event horizon, the Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress comes to 2017 with a fearless memorability that is as unique as it is noteworthy. For the Moto Guzzi MGX-21 First Ride Review, Lemmy headed out to Sturgis to see how this angular piece of Italian intricacy performed on some of the best riding roads in the country.

Uh huh. Until i put a pair of bags on the classic Moto Guzzi i own. Along with the existing windscreen and crash bars i never realised how much fun touring on a bike you really enjoy could be. I like the simplicity of Moto Guzzi design and engineering. No liquid cooling, no chain. A transmission oriented like a RWD car. Completely detachable from the engine.

Glad to see Moto Guzzi getting some love... they tend not to get attention from the traditional Italian biker market since they just don't fit the stereotype. Personally I love their esthetic... and if you're not all about the power there's a lot to love in Moto Guzzi designs.

This was the first motorcycle review from Revzilla and Lemmy that I watched, and man am I happy to have found it. Lemmy, I join the choir of praise. You rock! And I ended up buying the Fortress. Beeing 6'4" I found the Fatboy I initially had my eyes on to simply be too small for me. The Guzzi not so much. It rides fantastically once you've gotten used to the huge front wheel and it's a complete eye catcher. I can hardly ever stop without people approaching me and discuss the bike. Loads of fun!

I love Moto Guzzi's for what they are, for how they ride and for their design and engineering philosophy. Almost universally MG riders struggle to define just what makes the brand and the bikes so appealing to them. They certainly are not the fastest but they are good for many years of trouble free riding for the most part. Pretty easy to maintain and repair if you should be tempted to purchase one. Great bike to enter into a long term relationship with. Not the absolute best at anything perhaps but really good in so many ways and just a joy to ride for reasons that are hard to define but so great to experience. Such descriptions are likely to leave a prospective first time owner with more questions than answers. Seems to be a common theme among owners. Affinity and dedication that is often hard to quantify in words but is there in spades. A great choice for those who want to own and ride what to me are great bikes that let you experience joy and satisfaction which is hard to explain but is very real. Unique bikes that set you apart from the crowd. Bikes from a hallowed brand with a rich history on the road and the track. To help you identify and be identified as an individual with discerning tastes for an uncommon, somewhat rare and exclusive machine that sets you well apart from the pack. I love these many aspects of ownership, admiration and growing dedication to the brand. Motorcycling down the road less travelled has been and continues to be very exciting and satisfying for me and others who choose this great breed of bikes that so many riders will never experience. Substantial uncommon motorcycles that I always intend to own at least one example of as long as I continue to ride. Always grateful that I discovered and purchased one of these machines. I never intend to be without at least one. Thank you Moto Guzzi.

@Gregory Timmons As a new owner of a not-so-new Guzzi ('98 Nevada 750 Club), I agree on everything! I can share how I think I got hooked on them: as a kid one of our neighbors had an '80s 1000 California, it looked massive and super cool to me, with those big cylinder heads, and the sound... man I loved it. The Guzzi sound, especially THAT sound you get when accelerating between 2500 and 4500/5000 rpms, combined with the vibration... it's pure magic. Long story short guy later on had a spine problem and had to sell the bike. After some years I found a smaller Nevada 750 at a good price on the classifieds and went for it! Had no regrets since. What Guzzi do you ride?

@@eugeniocollinassi.1548 A 1976 1000iconvert. 948.8 actually but obviously Moto Guzzi likes lying up the displacement as much as possible. It's a police model, just not an actual retired police bike. 2 speed box with a torque converter & linked brakes. 55,000 miles. 5,000 of which I put on. Owned since 2013. Yes, the sad truth is, I have yet to run a Moto Guzzi thru it's gears. I have the old farts cruiser of MA's. Or really a new noon to police agencies where it really is just like driving a squad car in it's functionality. Clutch only for ratio changes and starts.

Lemmy is great :) I appreciate how honestly he treated the Guzzi. For those of you interested, if the price tag is too high you can buy the "standard" California Touring, which comes with bags and a windshield and all the same gimmicks as the MGX, minus the carbon, for a lighter price. I don't know pricing in the US, but here the difference is roughly 2k€.

Hi Pradipta :) the engine is the same. California differs from the Flying Fortress only for the wheels, but if you buy the Touring version you get bags and a windscreen along with the bike. Same is for Audace, engine is the same, frame is the same, but it's a more stripped-down version of the California.

Question for Lemmy: How does this bike compare to the Yamaha Vstar 1300 Deluxe, which is another 80 cubic inch bagger? Have you ever ridden one? I am curious because at around $14K, it's a loaded bagger with even a builtin navigation. Might be a nice bike to commute back and forth from PA to NYC with. I've seen some new leftover '15 models in the ultra bright red going for a hair under $11K (A full $10K less than the Moto Guzzi). Seems like a deal for a loaded bagger. Opinions?

This is my kinda bagger. Loved the V7 forever, felt like the Harley touring bikes were too..."retired" looking and loved the Indians but sort of looked at them like they're catering too much towards people in a bygone era (exception to the Dark Horse models). I'm actually a little surprised they didn't throw another dozen cubes at it and setup for a model with a "tailgunner" passenger backrest/trunk.

I know I'm late to the party, but turns out there are some of these that never sold and you can find a NEW 2017 for half-off just about anywhere that has any left. 😲 That said, I bought one today! 🥳

re. suspension: May be soft for big riders or 2-up. However if you are of slight build as I am ( 5' 10" - 165 lbs. ) and exclusively ride solo the suspension would be just dang near perfect. :-D

I can't tell if I like it or not. I love the V7, so much that I had to own a limited edition model, but there's something about this flying fortress that just doesn't do it for me. Maybe it's the fairing or the bags but I'm not sure. I just am not one for the looks of the bike but I can imagine it's a really nice bike to ride.

I rode my first V7iii today and I just couldn't dig it. I'm used to fast bikes is some of the problem, but the power band was just not for me. As soon as I was about to have some fun, the rev limiter kicked in. What do you enjoy about it...the thumping and the mystique of that old school look?

What is the protection gear that Lemmy is riding in? Is it a two piece riding suit and do you think a riding suit is good for riding a cruiser? Does it matter if you use a one piece, two piece, or just riding protection is ok for a cruiser?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 7 жыл бұрын
We list all the gear in the video description. Here it is again for your convenience: *Bell Star Helmet: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/bell-star-solid-helmet *Rukka AiRider Jacket: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/rukka-airider-jacket *Rukka AiRider Pants: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/rukka-airider-pants *Rukka Ceres Gore-Tex Gloves: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/rukka-ceres-gore-tex-gloves *Daytona Road Star GTX Boots: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/daytona-road-star-gtx-boots As you can see from the product pages, the jacket and pants are separates, but the jacket and pants have zippers that connect them together. These connection zippers keep the jacket from riding up in a slide. Regardless of the bike you're riding, I feel it's good to have a proper armored riding jacket and proper armored riding pants. It also helps if they zip together for added safety. A one-piece riding suit can be a little annoying if you want to take it off at a stop. Notice that when Lemmy is talking off the bike in this review, he's wearing the riding pants, but he has the jacket off. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla

Nice bike, if you like baggers. Personally, I'm looking for a sport tourer, which isn't that far away removed from a bagger, except in the engine, fairing and windshield departments. Speaking of the windshield, I love the one here on the MGX21, just really awesome. I was surprised to see BMW has come out with a K1600B model, which is supposed to be their entry into the 'Bagger' market. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the K1600GT, and one day I hope to own one, but it's NOT a Bagger, no matter what they do to it. I mean, it's a good looking bike and all, but I don't see them selling too many of them, whereas the Guzzi fits more in line with the Bagger mentality, even if the engine is 'the wrong way.' :D :) I suspect Guzzi will have a hit with this bike. Thanks for the First Ride, Lemmy!

Red goes faster, well, in this case, SLOWER! P.s. It looks friggin epic, the only bagger i'd like to be seen on (but the concept for the K1600B also looks ludicrously awesome, although it looks more "mega-cruiser" than bagger.)

I ride a Yamaha MT-09 Tracer (FJ-09) and used to ride a Kawasaki ER6N. I have little to no interest in cruiser bikes and I find Harley Davidsons to be absolutely horrible to look at, horrible to listen to and I find it pretty clear that, in Australia at least, people buy them for the image that comes with them, rather than anything else. So that being said, do I generally like baggers? Hell NO. I think they're horrible....... But would I own one of these? In a heartbeat. Would I swap my FJ-09 for one? I probably would. Absolutely gorgeous. Italian style with tour-ability and comfort.

Do you know how many miles were on your test bike? My mgx21 had a pretty dramatic break in period. I thought the front end was bouncey too but around the 1500 mile mark everything seemed to click into place.

He keeps saying it’s expensive, it’s expensive, it’s like the exact cost of a street glide...
@musashiyamasaki2885
@musashiyamasaki2885 5 жыл бұрын
He is not the only one who was saying that. It hurt sales to have it singled out for being expensive when it really wasn't. It's just that people have acclimated so much to the cost of a Harley or even Japanese tourers/baggers that it's an afterthought at this point. I think the "expensive" part enters the picture when you just don't respect the brand as much as fans do.
