I've noticed that some people struggle with memorizing Moto Gymkhana courses. The trick is to approach the memorization portion of the event with a good plan of attack. Here are a few ideas on how to use your time wisely.

Alex, you’ve made the most informative and educational motorcycle videos that I have even seen. Thank you for sharing your techniques with us. Many of the actions such as “the Magic Moment “ and “Rear Wheel Steering” I have accidentally experienced in my 12 years of riding, but I didn’t know how to get there or to repeat it. You turned on my light bulb and opened up my mind. I fully enjoyed your level 1 and 2, looking forward to seeing your next level. Thank you very much.

Thank you so much, Alex! I have learned so much from you and start practising some techniques! But I found myself sometimes not sure how to progress with my learning, right now I just start from basic figure 8 drills. Would you' have any recommendations about how to systematically progress Moto Gymkhana skills from beginner to master? I'm following Motojitsu as well and found his White belt to Black belt system works really well for learning target. Looking forward to your videos! Much appreciated!

Honestly, my advice would be to gain as much knowledge about motorcycles as you can. Take all of the courses you can afford, read as many books as you can and watch as many videos online as you can. Besides that...practice and more practice. Becoming a master is all about daily attention to your craft and lots of practice and patience. It's kinda like dieting. You can choose many paths to lose weight and have good nutrition: Low carb diet, low fat diet, intermittent fasting, exercise, vegan diet, etc. But they all have something in common: None of them will work unless you apply them accurately and have the DISCIPLINE to stick with them long term. So any style or method you work on will improve your Gymkhana skills. Track riding, dirt riding, police slow speed style, MotoJitsu program, etc. Learn them all, stick with the practice long term and you will see results guaranteed. As far as specific exercises for Gymkhana, I would check out a channel and website called MySimasima. It's all in Japanese but you can use Google Translate. You can also watch the practice videos on KZfaq and emulate the exercises they use. That was how I learned some helpful patterns. Hope that helps :)

I'd love to hear your ideas for how to keep sharp in the off-season for those of us who don't enjoy year-round riding weather. In Canada where I am I have a few months to forget all my hard won skills from the past season! I've started using my balance board, and lots of youtube ofc, but what would you recommend? Keep up the good work.

That's a damn good question. You mentioned KZfaq and that's always great. Studying other rider's movements and line selection/strategy is key to deeper understanding of the rhythm and flow of Gymkhana. Besides that, I would also focus on doing a lot of reading. I currently have 8 motorcycle related books that I have read multiple times. I recently bought the Lee Park's/Race Tech Suspension Bible. I am attempting to learn as much as I can about suspension so that I can better understand my motorcycle. The more general knowledge you have about motorcycles and different styles, the better off you will be in Gymkhana. Knowing how to properly modify, adjust and maintain your motorcycle is like 30% of the game so even buying books on the mechanical aspects of motorcycles would be helpful. You can also focus (as you are doing) on the athletic aspects of motorcycling. ALL motorcyclists of ALL styles can benefit from increasing leg, glute, hip and core strength and mobility. Balance boards are fantastic and so is hitting the gym. Cardio comes into play as well, so we should be hitting the stationary bike or stairs. The other thing we can work on is increasing our cognitive abilities. I always recommend some form of Meditation practice for motorcyclists. I use elements of Mindfulness, Zazen, Wim Hof breathing exercises to help regulate my stress levels as well as improve my focus and concentration. Hope this helps :)

Hi Alex, thanks for all the video's you've put on here. They have helped me a lot already in improving my slow speed riding skills. Watched all the video's now and continue to re-watch them. One question for you. Do you have the dimensions for the placement of cones for the slalom, figure 8 and offset weave? So i can set up my own course. Many thanks. Tom (UK)

Tom. Thank you very much for your comment. It's always great to hear that the videos are helpful. Unfortunately, I don't remember what dimensions I used for the patterns. When I practice, I usually just throw out some cones and I don't really ever measure the distance. For the Figure 8, I would recommend using the official GP8 standard distance between cones, which is 12 meters. I would also encourage that you practice both wider and shorter distances between each cone because each variation will require a different technique and approach. That will help you to be more well rounded and ready for anything. As far as slaloms, I would start with maybe 6 meters between each cone. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with the dimensions but thanks again for your support. Cheers!
