This was my first ride down the Soquel Demonstration Forest "Flow" trail in the Santa Cruz mountains, Good times! I took my Motobecane Fantom DS Comp 29er down the trail and it was surprising how the Motobecane handled the trail! POV video on an Evo SS wearable gimbal.

I've ridden road bikes all my life (40+) and without knowing anything about it I bought a Schwinn entry level hardtail MTB some years ago but recently really started to get into it with my son. I like the Motobecane full suspension bike you have and I'm even considering it. I'd like to ask a few questions prior to my purchase. Like how did you decide between full suspension and hardtail? How much difference does the tubeless tires make? Did you consider the different wheel sizes 26", 27.5" and 29"? Now that you've had it for a while would you have selected something else? I'd know the more money you invest the better the equipment is but I'd like to stay between $500 to $700 for the initial purchase, thanks!

I have ridden hardtails my entire life and I was ready to finally get into the full susupension game. As far as running the tubeless setup, I like it because it gives me confidence knowing that I am a lot less likely to get a flat from smaller thorns and whatnot. I can also run the tires at a lower pressure without worry too much about pinch flats. I haven't noticed much difference as far as having less rotational weight... I personally choose the 29er after much research because I wanted to be able to "monster truck" over the small to medium stuff, I like to go fast. I am actually really happy with this bike and I am glad I bought it, zero regrets so far. For my next bike I'll probably go with a suspension design that is a little more state of the art and also try out a 27.5. :-D Thanks for your questions, I hope this info helps you out!

Wow i think im sold on these bikes. I didnt hear one chain slap your entire ride. And yes for the price you get decent specs a bulletproof frame and even tubeless compatible rims. I was going to spend 1200 on a new giant but now im probably going to get a full susp. Carbon bike from this online retailer. Thanks for the videos and the info.

I've got a Motobecane Fantom 29 X4. It's a hardtail XC based bike and I've punished it pretty hard. It's absorbed everything I've thrown at it -- long grinding climbs, steep technical climbs, fast flowy descents with rollers and jumps, steep technical descents, rocky climbs/descents, rooty sections, drop offs, etc. Surprisingly the only work it's required has been normal maintenance - a new chain, cassette, brake pads, etc. I've only rode hardtails but my skills are requiring that I venture further and further into territory better suited for a trail bike, which is why I've been considering getting a full squish Motobecane. If the DS Comp is as reliable as my X4, I'm sold.

@OCD Mountain Biking How is this bike holding up? I was up at Delaveaga Park last weekend riding the back trails on a full suspension Juliana ( too pricy for me) I grew up in the area and rode Hardtails I am considering this bike. I have purchased other bikes from Bikes Direct(unfortunately i had two stollen). Anyway I know this is an old video but any comment on this bike would be great! thanks

Bike shop snobs are just pissed you didnt buy feom them. That is the one thing about owning a bike from this company. You will get ugly looks. The crappy part is that even the expensive bike shop bikes are also built by a 12 year old girl sitting on a bag of rice in china. You tell them bike shop snobs you love your bike and arent replacing it. You will buy your upgrades from them but let them know you are on a budget and you got the most bang for your buck.

Having the seat that high on a trail like this is a good way to end up eating dirt. Of course if you're able to stay oblivious to the traffic backing up behind you I guess you can go slow enough that it's not a problem.
@OCDMountainBiking
@OCDMountainBiking 7 жыл бұрын
You're talking about my friend in the white shorts ahead of me? I agree, you really do need a dropper these days, especially on technical trails like this one. Buying a dropper seatpost was one of the greatest additions to my bike I've made yet!
@effewegugal3382
@effewegugal3382 7 жыл бұрын
There was another rider early in the video doing the same thing. I enjoy your videos and I'm sure it's not input you need personally, it just seemed worth a mention because a lot of people don't even realize you should stand to do a jump so they definitely haven't thought through how dangerous that mistake can be. I've seen people sitting on their butt misjudge a bump and get bucked over the bars head first. I've also encountered people who opt for full suspension bikes because they think the suspension will allow them to stay on the seat and absorb less shock in the lower back. That's not the idea behind the suspension at all. These bikes are designed towards maintaining the highest level of contact between the tire and the dirt, the rider should still raise off of the seat to maintain optimal control and agility over rough terrain the same as they would on a hard tail. I noticed he did lift from the seat from time to time but still a little too close to allow for free movement of the bike between the ground and the rider. A better practice if you don't have a dropper would be to lower the seat where it would need to be for that particular kind of riding and stand up to pedal up hill and deal with the bad geometry during those parts of the trail that you didn't need to stand up since they are a small percentage of that kind of trail anyway. This also allows more room to get space between you and the bike if an obstacle does surprise you.

Yep, dropping the seat a few inches is a big plus for downhilling. A dropper is even better, and makes a "whole 'nuther level" difference in riding downhill in technical terrain.
