Hey Blade, this is one of the best review/thoughts on the Vulcan S. I've watched many & ive never heard anyone say a bad thing about these bikes. I'm coming off of a GSXR 750 which was stupid for street riding & the Vulcan S looked like the perfect alternative but I ended up on a Sportster which I love but I'm kicking myself for not test riding a Vulcan, a sporty cruiser, the perfect bike. Nice job!
@PragmaticTornado
@PragmaticTornado 6 жыл бұрын
I honestly think a Vulcan S would have been a much better alternative for someone coming off a super sports bike. You got the 1200 though, right? :P

Pragmatic Tornado I agree, I know that they are awesome bikes, def on my list for next bike. Yes I bought a 1200 & love it, it's a blast to ride & likes to be ridden hard. It's a fun bike to ride

Nice. Haven't tried a 1200 Sportster yet, but I've ridden a couple other Harleys. I know the 1200 Sportster is supposed to be pretty quick, for a Harley. I considered one myself at one point, but ended up getting a much cheaper Kawasaki Vulcan instead.. Which I had for like 3 months, haha. Bought a Hayabusa right after that. Quite a step up.
@jimmansi1187

Pragmatic Tornado yeah that's quite a step up! Did you like the Vulcan?

It was a 1993 Vulcan 750. Twin carbs, twin cams, liquid cooled and with a shaft drive. It was pretty peppy for a small cruiser actually, but I kinda ruined it when I bought a set of V&H pipes for it. Became way too loud, and the original exhaust pretty much fell apart when I took it off, so couldn't put that back on either. Ended up selling it super cheap to my stepfather, who used it as a learner bike before he got his motorcycle license. Then he bought a big Harley and sold the Vulcan :P I'm fairly sure I would like the Vulcan S a whole lot more if I owned one though. I briefly had a 1999 Yamaha Dragstar 1100 last summer too, in absolute mint condition. Only rode it a couple times before I sold it, but I kinda wanted to keep it. Such great bikes. Unfortunately, I had too many bikes and had to get rid of it. I've blown through like 6 bikes the last 3 seasons. Love trying new ones.

Had mine since 2015, absolutely love it, last year I took a trip with 12 friends from Michigan to North Carolina (Blue ridge skyway) , we did 1600 miles in 5 days. It performed absolutely great. I was riding with guys in larger bikes but my bike was perfectly able to keep up. Even if I buy a larger bike in the future, I am keeping this bike.

I didn't know about this bike until I stopped into a local dealership today. I'm 5'4 and have always worried about height on a back. Now I'm looking at this as my first motorcycle as a gift to myself for my 50th. This video has sealed the deal for me. Thanks much!

Your videos have helped a lot in my research on a first bike. I just ordered a new 2018 Vulcan S ABS Special Edition this weekend, I should have it in a week or two. I never had a bike license when I was living in New Jersey (too much traffic everywhere), but it was always on my bucket list. After I moved to Quebec, I finally got my bike license - driving school is mandatory here, so I learned on their bikes - and now I am finally getting my own. Bike season is shorter up here of course, but we have tons of scenic roads to ride on just minutes from Montreal. Can't wait to go riding! Thanks, and keep up the good work!

I own this bike for almost 2 years , traveling almost 30,000 km . Vulcan s is just awesome bike and great value for your bucks. Before I bought this bike, I had tried sportster 883 and X48 with a test ride. Those raw features, especially the all time exaggerated vibration annoying me off HD. I just checked Kawasaki ‘ bikes at local dealer, all bikes are great finish and details including this bad boy. Two months later, I bought my VS in black color way with ABS with NO doubt.

I have had mine for 8 months now and have about 2300 miles on it. It seems to get more fun every time I ride it. Took it out for a couple hours of riding the twisties in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas last weekend. FUN FUN FUN. Also took it up to 100 MPH for the first time last weekend and it still had more I could go.

i had the pleasure of borrowing one of these bikes from a buddy of mine and i must say, the vulcan s is still one of my most favorite bikes to ride. Im from arkansas so was able ride the pig trail and many other great routes which was a blaaaaast! Having the comfort of a cruiser with the nimbleness and pep of a more sporty bike makes curvy roads waaay to fun!

I own the exact same one with 13k miles. I have not used the power adapter either. I do have a gps unit with a mount with the relay built in with it. The gear indicator is useful when going long distances. It helps me remember which gear i am in when transitioning from interstates and local highways. It is a crotch rocket so i was confident to change the front sprocket to 16t from 15t and rear 43t from 46t. Rolls off alot smoother

Got mine last july, 2017 SE with the nice rich red colour. made 7.5k in 3 months (now waiting for the winter to be over) that's how much i love this bike. i also have a suzuki that i don't use anymore, it's going for sale this month. so far on the vulcan s i installed a puig windshield, imo the best aftermarket windshield for the vulcan s, made my own fender eliminator for about $25 the after market one cost $150 over here, the one i made look exactly the same. installed spool and got a rear jack so i can do my oil change and take care of the chain, new brake and clutch lever, red to match the colour of the bike.

Everything you said is true ... except the colour. I still think it's hideous. One other thing - I had to install mirror extenders on mine so that I could see past my own shoulders. Some people may not like the exhaust sound because it's too quiet. I'm OK with it. The 2017 model has a gear indicator so the digital display is even more informative now. As you say, this bike is fast for a 650. I went on holiday with two friends on Ducatis and they never managed to drop me even when they tried. Perhaps its most impressive characteristic, again as you say, is its cornering ability - absolutely unbelievable for a cruiser. Ride safe mate.

If your bike has a fuel gauge then it's already better than 90% of Yamahas. Their top-end bikes don't even have a fuel gauge. Just a fuel light that comes on to tell you that you're too far away from a gas station so you might as well find a comfortable parking spot on the side of the road.

Seriously, some questions, and feel free to steer me to another vid, if you've answered this there....what's your opinion on the Vulcan S for a "first bike in a long while." Like 30 years. Want to get back on two, and I'm liking the looks of this one. Secondly...opinion on acceleration? Shifting/clutch work? Breaking? Reliability? Maintenance? And, any other Vulcan S riders, feel free to light up the comments. I've got a three horse race of different bikes, and can't afford to buy-and-sell...really need to nail it the first time.

Definitely the Vulcan S. Maintenance periods are every 7k miles with minimal work needing to be done (basic oil change, etc.). Braking is fantastic. Handling is great. Acceleration is very quick if you want it to be. (It's a ninja sport engine at its core). It was my first bike and I could not have been happier. I will link to two other videos in another comment here going over a full review and the couple of things I would change. Overall satisfaction with the bike, 90/100. Hope this and the videos are helpful to you!

Motoblade, okay my friend, I be likin' this! I like your reviews and commentary. Particularly appreciate your sharing the downsides and what you'd like to change. I'm thinking this is my frontrunner now; but, the Yamaha Bolt, Suzuki C50 are still nipping at it's heels. The Honda CTX700N was on my list, but is falling off. The Honda Aero recently got a recommendation. As a group, I'm thinking it's a "no-lose" situation. Thanks for all your insight

Winter commuting in the snow here is very easy with public transportation (subway transit, etc) so I'd be ok. In the summer taking a ride up to Muskoka (national forrest) for an overnight with a small tent and minimal equipment is very doable with saddle bags as you mentioned. And honestly man, at $7,000 new you can't beat it, and that mileage OMG....

John Smith It's never too late! I would recommend taking the safety course like I did. Lots of updated information that some of the older riders found very useful even though they had been riding for years. I would recommend looking at the Indian Chief Dark Horse. You can watch my full review of that on my channel. I upgraded to that bike mainly for comfort reasons. The Vulcan S is fun, but for longer rides and touring comfort, Indian is the way to go now. John, there's been a 30 year gap between when I rode a bike in New York, and now in Florida. At the age of 74, I treated myself to the birthday present of a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS KRT Edition, which I love and which is sufficient for my needs. Three words to you: Go for it!

@@Gigatless I have a garage, so it doesn't cost me anything in the winter. I say about $100 a year in maintenance (oil change, chain lube, etc.). I never took it to a shop, I did the labor myself, so I don't pay a mechanic. Fuel is also very cheap considering the mileage the bike gets. Very economical ride.

I had almost decided to sell my 2017 Kawasaki Z1000SX (Ninja 1000) and get one of these instead, due to various reasons, mainly that this has a Parallell Twin, which has a more fun sound than a boring inline four, it looks unique being a sports bike / cruiser hybrid, and I'd get rid of half the loan I have on the current bike. I actually test rode one last summer, and found it fun, but didn't ride it enough to form a final opinion. But I recently decided to try my Kawi for another season, with aftermarket mufflers instead of the god awful stock cans. Euro 4 has really sucked the fun out of most bikes in stock form. This bike is high on my list though when I decide to switch, only superseded by the Kawasaki H2 SX SE (over 3x as expensive though).

Did you ever take your KVS on the Tail of the Dragon? Cockney Biker took Uncle Red out there , and he's talking about going again. I'm thinking of taking my KVS the 300ish miles from here to LA to join them, riding it up from LA to the Tail and than riding it over the Tail. Not sure if I'll like riding it that far and if it will handle the Tail well.

Side note: i'm 5 foot 6 and about 175lbs, so i'm a smaller rider. Most riding is done locally but usually several times per summer I want to do long, all-day rides. How does this do in that?

Eddy Lindenstein I haven't tried the FZ1, but you'd be dropping about 80hp to the Vulcan S. It's a totally different style. I am similar at 5 foot 7, 29 inch inseam. It's a very comfortable riding position for longer rides, but I would definitely replace the seat. Hope this helps!

In the following video, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e8-XhM99r7GVeH0.html, @6:35, the rider actually scrapes the right peg and further down @7:25, one can see where the bike cannot lean much period. I could see okay-ish if I tucked my elbows in when I looked. My suggestion would be bar end mirrors, since we can screw things into the bar ends on the Vulcan S. Would give it a sportier look as well. Don't get cheap quality though, because I have seen them fall off. Invest in some good ones from a good brand. I would only change the handlebars if you need to change your riding position. Not just for the sake of the mirrors. That's my 2 cents. Ride safe!
