First test drive on the road with this $500 facebook marketplace find, This is my very first time ever driving a Fiero. Take a ride along with me and my son to see what it's like to drive a Fiero GT! I love it so far, car isn't super fast but it is respectable for sure. Follow along as I do repairs and maintenance on it.
Worth $500?

My cousin has a black one with a 4 cycl. He wanted to take a girl out that was not his girlfriend at the time without her seeing him out so we swapped cars for the day. He took my 78 Camaro and I drove his Fiero. The 4 cylinder in his car impressed me. It was about as fast as my stock 305 V8. He replaced the throttle cable in his and said it was the worse job he ever took on. (He was a full time mechanic at the time). I really liked the car!

The 4 cyl "Iron Duke" engines were turds, they got good gas mileage though. I drove an 86 GT with auto and the 2.8 V6, almost bought it, but couldn't agree on a price. Looking back I wish I had pulled the trigger, they are so damn cool.

@@MotoCheezDrop the oil pan & put a new oil pump in. The tiny pressure relief spring inside them on the 2.8L V6 go bad early. Causing lower oil pressure, then they'll at some point completely go & you'll have no oil pumping to the engine = destroyed engine. If the 2.8 has 98K miles, a new oil pump + better modern oil. You might be able to get another 75- 100K miles out of it. If you don't check or change oil pump it'll be toast soon.

It wasn’t a GT but I had an 84. I was 17 or so when I got it. My mother worked at a car lot and I was able to pick it up really cheap, only had 34,000 miles on it. I think I had gotten it in 1990. Mine was a 5 speed if I remember right, fun little car to cruise around in. I put in an Alpine CD and 2 Rockford Fosgate Punch 8” grey box speakers with a Punch amp. I was styling in high school 😆. Got a lot of the jealous kids telling me it was a girls car. You know they would have loved to have it lol. How funny, after watching the video mine was the exact same way. Throttle was hard to push in and yeah no power steering. I learned to drive stick in that car so of course I burned out the clutch and I remember it sat parked for 4 months or so because I couldn’t afford to get it fixed. The repair of the clutch in those was quite expensive because they had to pull the engine if I remember right.

Looks awesome, man. Even with the stock engine. BTW you inspired me to supercharge my mini truck. Been stockpiling parts for the past few months. Been studying your videos like scripture, to see how you did it all. I’m pretty close to figuring out how everything is supposed to button up, but it’s scary, man. My Carry runs so good, but like yours, it’s 4 speed, set up with all this off-road gear, and it struggles up hills and stuff. Boost would definitely help it out. My plan is to remove the stuff that’s stock and replace it with modded parts, instead of modding stock parts. This way I can always go back. Every day I realize another thing I’m missing 🤷‍♂️ Is there a way to contact you privately? I have questions regarding this build. Having said that, I understand if you say no and prefer to keep separate interests, so to speak. I’m a fan of your channel either way 👍

On the gauges, all of them, you will see on the back of them there are what looks like 10/32 screws. These "screws" or pegs with ridges get corroded where they push into the springy fingers that they push into. Temp gauge checked out fine, but when I put new sender in it gradually pegged within about 30 seconds from cold, picking up speed as it went...replaced THAT sender with ANOTHER new one and same thing, only a little slower. WTF!?? Not enuf resistance evidently but hard to believe that BOTH could possibly be THAT defective. 😵🤬. The REALLY bizarre thing is that with the wire to the sender completely DISCONNECTED and ignition OFF, the gauge seems to show the appx temp the engine WAS when shut down previously when I return to it later(!?!) 😵‍💫

Fiero's a neat cars, it's too bad they ended up having flaws to them that gave them a bad rap. For me, I'd say they coolest car I found for sale on Craigs List over the years was a Chrysler Conquest project car. It was in solid shape with some spots being done up in primer. I think the engine was in it but it didn't run being a project car, the dude only wanted $1,200 for it at the time. Sadly I wasn't working so I had no money to buy it nor did I have a spot to store it. But it was a surprise seeing one for sale. Some other neat vehicles I encountered last summer while stopping at a local gas station were an 80's Toyota Van (Toyota Town-Ace in Japan) and a Plymouth Horizon. Ya, I know neither of them are cool sports cars but I was surprised to see both of them. Especially the Plymouth Horizon, it looked very clean and had no rot from what I could tell. Cars like those tend to be rotted into the ground here. :)

@@MotoCheez Yes, according to some info I just read it came with either a 2.0 or 2.6l 4 cylinder, both of them equipped with a turbo. It could be had with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The Conquest was a rebadged Mitsubishi Starion. Made from 1982 until 1989. My pickup has a 2.7l Turbo-4 in it that puts out 310hp, imagine something like that in the Fiero. Of course it's tuned for torque so it doesn't rev high. But still, it's big power for a light car. :)

The four cylinder cars were IMO better than the GTs. The Iron Duke is a very primstive motor, but they are solid and can build a lot of power with the right parts. And the four cylinder cars could be turbocharged without cutting the body.
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 5 ай бұрын
I thought the same after having iron dukes in boats I've owned, but the boat engines were HD. The 4 cylinder iron duke they put in cars were no good. I learned that after reading many forums, they blow up with boost, weak rods and had plastic cam gear... I have another SE Fiero that I bought blown up (another video). You can turbo the 6 without cutting body, but the best option by far is a transplanted 3.8 Supercharged
@jacktheaviator4938
@jacktheaviator4938 5 ай бұрын
@@MotoCheez not all of the Iron Dukes had the issues you mentioned. They are one of the most reliable motors ever built. That's why they were used in the LLV mail trucks. And you have to admit, those trucks were driven in the absolute worst conditions, stop and start, 6 days a week, for 30 years. I fell in love with those motors while doing maintenance for the postal service. The marine blocks are the best, and the Pontiac SD4 heads were the best you could get without doing a bunch of machining. My Fiero has a marine Iron Duke with an LS head. The biggest job was actually getting a functional fuel injection system, I eventually used Bosch injectors that were originally spec for a 240 Nissan. With a haltec running everything. It is reliable and has good manners on the street at 390hp, but I can turn it up over 450hp and it gets exciting. I have beaten 2 different 3800 swapped Fieros on the strip and it handles FAR better than any of the V6 cars. I am looking for another chassis to build a full track car, but I will use a billet block and take it much further.

@jacktheaviator4938 they were! Back when they were carbureted and 60HP. They're a low RPM torquey motor. They don't handle boost well because the 100HP mark was when the issues start. I did a ton of research because I was going to replace the blown one with another duke, if I could find an HD I would.

He was asking 1500 and I found a little bit of rust on the engine carriage like the size of a quarter so I offered him 500. He lost a keys so we couldn't hear it run either so it was a little bit of a gamble

To fix the revers lights the switch for the 4 speed is on the shifter and the 5 speed its on the trans by the speed sensor. The 4 speed its common for them to need to be adjusted. The 4 speed are way way faster off the line.
@MotoCheez
@MotoCheez 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for that info, I saw the switch on a transmission I believe. Yes I heard the four speeds had lower gearing than to get rag five speed but the Isuzu 5spd I guess is equivalent with an extra gear at top
@darianballard2074
@darianballard2074 9 ай бұрын
@@MotoCheez They also would take the 4 speed out of the 4 cylinders and put them in the v6 cars. The 4 cylinder 4 speed trans have 410 finale drive. The gearing in the 5 and 4 speeds aren't the same. The 4 speed has a longer 1st second and third. The 5 speed first is almost to short to use. I hope you enjoy your Fiero.
