So for a coil you will have to remove the shock, remove the coil, reinstall the shock without the coil and then measure.

Correct, you just need to do it the first time to get the travel, and then you can just take measurements. The app will show you the real-time measurements in millimeters as well as the percentage of travel being used so you don't have to do the calculations.
