As someone who was licensed to sell insurance and also is part of the street legal UTV scene, something VERY IMPORTANT people need to consider when insuring their street legal ATV/UTV is that most motorcycle policies only cover 2 and 3 wheeled vehicles. Also, most ATV policies only cover you for off road use with on road incidental. IF YOU TRY TO GET A QUOTE for a street use ATV, make sure and make it absolutely clear with the licensed agent that your policy will COVER STREET USE and also COVER 4 WHEELED VEHICLES. Many people in my community, which is UTV, have been involved in accidents and later find out their insurance company is NOT covering them or protecting them because their policy did not cover street use or 4 wheeled vehicles. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Usually, you need to demand that the agent speaks to the underwriter or underwriting department to make sure you will be covered. Also, if you run a street legal ATV/UTV with the proper road use insurance, you also need a regular ATV policy for off road use as most road legal policies WILL NOT cover you for off road use. Most people in my community just ride them on the street but a majority of people that will street legalize their ATV/UTVs are using them for mostly off road and just want the street legal designation to ride to and from the trails. Regardless, make sure you are covered on the road or off the road. In most cases, there are severe gaps in coverage when comparing one or the other and you need both on road and off road if you use it for both uses. Thanks.
