TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE!!!! And us NY'ers also call the Queenboro Bridge the 59th st bridge
@OLOH
@OLOH Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for your note. As a lifelong New Yorker, I colloquially still refer to the GMC Bridge as the Tappan Zee. But for the sake of our content we use its proper name since the TZB was torn down and does not appear on modern charts and maps that way. Same with the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge which is how it commonly appears. It will always be the 59th St bridge to me but since we're finding that a lot of people from out of the area use our videos as cruising guides, we aim to avoid any possible confusion by using proper names.

We make noise, our ambitions are admirable on this journey of life, but the best moments along the way our small, solitary and quiet in my belief. For an instance we see all our efforts for what they are, necessities of our own choice, but we are what we are and it is what it is. We are small in this world but we think big and when we trim to the breeze that there is and not the breeze, there ought to be, the wind will always bring us home.

This was like coming home for me. I grew up in Manhasset until the age of 12, when we moved to Miami. We kept our boat at the Capri. This would have been '57 - '58, and Capri was the new kid on the block. The much older more established Riviera Yacht Club was just down the street. Being 12 and a baseball fan, I was thrilled that the noted Brooklyn Dodger catcher Roy Campanella kept his boat just two slips away from ours. I'm now 77 and still living in Florida, but I sure miss boating on Manhasset Bay. Thanks for the video and the memories.

Larry - we love putting these videos together but it's comments like yours that simply make our day. We're so glad you could be along for the ride and that it brought back such warm memories. @@OLOH I crossed from Guilford, CT to Greensport, L I. I had timed the tide perfectly for my crossing except I didn't account for the fog. So I got a late start and paddled fast. I made it to within a mile and a half from shore when the tide changed. I paddled for an hour and a half while being in the same spot. The tide eased enough for me to make it to shore. Needless to say I was exhausted but if i stopped paddling I would have ben in worse conditions.

A couple of things come to mind after your great video and expert Captain skills. I'm just trying to add some comments. The ferry's and other commercial traffic use channel 13 so it's best to have 2 VHF radio's. one on 16 and the other 0n 13. Hell Gate is also known for lots of debris after rain storms and flash floods which adds to everything you mentioned. The debris gets more hazardous as your speed increases for those who have 30 plus knot vessels :) Thanks again Captain for a great ride ! Top notch !

Mario was a good governor, but I still prefer the Tappan Zee moniker. Nice to see Throgs Neck, too. I bought a 20' Sea Ray from a marina there in '90 and brought it home to Stamford on the water. Wow, talk about a fuel efficient run. We typically have plus/minus days here on the AICW along the east coast of Florida - you get the current from different directions depending on the tide state and if you're approaching an inlet, or down track from one. Glad you mentioned the currents affect on steerage - something to be remembered when voyage planning. Throgs Neck Bridge was always a bottleneck as we tried to leave the island, heading upstate for camping trips, on Friday afternoons. Like you, I sat in the back of the station wagon and was jealous of the boaters passing leisurely far below. Even after 40+ years Manhasset Bay and Port Washington look the same. Great boating spot.
@OLOH
@OLOH Жыл бұрын
Ha - as we said, hard to complain about 1 nmpg in a 60' boat. But a 4-5 knot current will help with that. Although at an average of 10 knots it's pretty close to where we land on typical long days. Cheers!

Thank you for another great video and trip down memory lane of my childhood trips along this route! Hell gate was always interesting with the whirlpools, eddies and stretch’s of smooth (deeper) water. My father passed down stories from his father, grandfather and great grandfather who worked the river (some under sail only before steam power) in the 1800’s about how much more treacherous Hellsgate was before some of the rock shelf’s were removed-

Unfortunately there's not one central location for this info and not every marina posts slip maps, although they should. We often find them on a marina's website and we keep them in a folder on our devices. Few things are more helpful when pulling into a marina, particularly when it's for the first time. When seeking general info and reviews for marinas we start with Active Captain, then Waterway Guide and Marinalife.

Thanks John! OLOH is *just* too tall for the Harlem River's air draft restriction without folding down our radar mount. We have traveled that route many times on our previous, shorter boats, but with OLOH we stick to the East River route.

@OLOH
@OLOH Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. The primary reason boats will round lower Manhattan as we did is there is a height restriction on the Harlem River that precludes many boats from going that way. Prior to OLOH that is how we would typically travel between the Sound and that portion of the Hudson.

Back in late 70s, I took the circle-line tour and it went through the Harlem River, and it was a lot higher than OLOH! Did they put in a new bridge into Harlan?
@OLOH
@OLOH Жыл бұрын
Not that we know of. You would think that the Circle Line boats are taller than OLOH given their overall size, but they are not, at least regarding minimum air draft. Fixed bridges on the Harlem River restrict air draft to 22.5 feet which was even a problem for some of the older Circle Line boats at extreme tides. OLOH can clear 23' with her antennae down but that is too close for comfort to make it worthwhile for us.
