Most drivability problems are caused by one of only four different things.
There is either a problem with getting the right amount of fuel into the engine, getting that air/fuel mixture to ignite when its supposed to, or a problem on the air side - compressing the air/fuel mixture and sealing the combustion chamber, or a problem getting the air in and out of the engine.
When it comes to many GDI designs, problems with engine carbon build-up can result in engine breathing issues.

A walnut blaster may be the only alternative for some engines with severe carbon buildup without taking the head(s) off. This is the best Automotive training series on KZfaq. I have learned a lot from Pete and the crew who provide these videos. Thank you Motor Age.

Great video Pete! Noticed the US General cart in the back ground, I converted that same cart to a diagnostic tool cart! It works great!

Sorry for the late reply. I snaked it through the vacuum port in the intake manifold just behind the throttle body.

If fresh, filtered air is going into the chamber, where does the carbon on the back of the intake valve come from?

It comes from passing through the unburned crankcase vapors that collect internally. In the old days, we vented the engine to the atmosphere but that changed with the Clean Air Act. Now, either a PCV or breather system is used to recycle these gasses.

@@MotorAgeMagazine Thanks. Yes, you did say mention crankcase ventilation. I can see how this doesn't happen as much or at all with either carburetor or indirect injection, because the fuel/air mix is flowing past the valve, as you said in the video. I wonder if the newer oil catch cans help alleviate or reduce this problem, something like the Provent units from Germany?
