Thanks for the vid. Good info-I’m off ‘abroad’ next week and it was a useful reminder of the dos and donts. My main learning over the years is as you say fewer one night stops (it’s nice to get settled in somewhere), and to also have a system for each pannier bag for ‘stuff I need for the night in the hotel’ v ‘stuff that I don’t need to unpack every night’. Makes life easier!

Just found you video , thanks for the very useful information concerning navigation and luggage choice . Riding to Switzerland in July 2024. Going back to ride some old routes. I lived in Switzerland in the 90s.It is a fantastic country to ride a bike. 👍

Hiya, glad it was useful 👍I loved my time in Switzerland, the roads are well maintained and terrific for us bikers. As a way of a little update, I have been using Points of Interest markers for navigation and found it works very well rather than pre planning a route and will use that approach when I head off to Europe in June. Have a great time and ride safe.

Your point about being ‘bike-fit’ is spot on. The number of people I’ve seen complaining about how uncomfortable their bike is, saying that they are going to have to throw a ton of money at upgrading the seat, suspension and everything else possible usually has one cause. For months on end they ride to Starbucks and back then expect to do 500 miles a day for two weeks. I imagine the same people would attempt to run a marathon after walking to the chop shop a few times.

Hello David, haha, that is so true. I know when I first came back to biking, I would be lucky to go an hour without major discomfort, now I am a lot more resilient. I prefer Greggs to Starbucks 🤣🤣🤣

I rode to turkey and back from Isle of Man in may/June on a tiger 900 get pro, no comfort issues other than hand vibrations. I’ve just done a similar trip to Hungary Poland etc on a gs1250 (because of hand issues on tiger) and whilst far more comfortable it kills my shoulders which i’m hoping to solve with bar risers. I’m not particularly fit but do think/hope it’s the bike setup rather than me (61 and licence less than 2 years. 8th bike already and wish I’d started years ago).

@@philipTOMPSETT Hello Philip, two nice bikes for sure and some cracking tours. I get what you are saying about being "fit" because I am not really referring to overall physical fitness as I could not possibly claim that. I refer to "bike fit" as being your overall endurance to riding a bike and in my case I know that the more I ride, the longer I can stay on the bike. It is very addictive isn't it. I came back to biking just before 60 and love every minute of it. Thanks for the comment👍

Great video, lots of stuff I agree with and good tips. I am 63 and lots of Euro trip under my belt and been lucky to do 3 much further afield. I enjoy Europe and still there is loads to go at once it gets towards the East. The only bit we differ on is booking hotels ... I used to book everywhere in advance but found I was often a slave to it ... sometimes I would come across unknown places that I wished to linger in but needed to press on to where my digs were booked ... or I would chat to a local who would tell me about somewhere special the opposite way but I had pre-booked a hotel. So now I only prebook the 1st night and the rest I do on my phone app as I start to be sure I am where I want to be ... works for me, there is no right or wrong of course. Even just talking about it makes me yearn for another 😆

My trip last year was 50/50 booking v non booking. Maybe the problems getting a signal and the app issues has swung me the other way, but like you say there is no right or wrong way. I am hoping to do something next year but will decide shortly and yes I do want to go back asap. Thanks for the great comment 👍

As a long time touring rider i must take issue with some of your ideas. First, its supposed to be an adventure, getting lost and ending up in a rubbish hotel that is not where you hoped to be is part of it. I mostly use a paper map as thats all that was available when i first started travelling nearly 50 years ago. No sat nav or mobile phones then, so you had to use a map and keep your witts about you , but that is all part of the adventure. Also I think you are taking far ,far to much luggage . On my last trip this August I used two small panniers and a small tank bag for a 31 day trip through to Greece and back via Italy and the alps. And i am 74 years old !! Travel light !!!
@blearyview2254
@blearyview2254 7 ай бұрын
Hello Mikey, yep, that is fair comment. Over my working career I have had so many poor digs that it important for me to have decent place to stay at the end of a long days riding. Travel light is something I want to get better at but it depends on the seasons. I had been watching the weather in Europe for a few weeks before departure and it was not looking good, they had a lot of stormy weather so there was stuff to deal with cold and the better weather. Adventure comes in many forms and this for me was mine. I hope I can tour when 74, bravo sir and thanks for the great feedback.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about weather as the first 8-9 days of my trip this year were wet or very wet !!! I always use basic overtrousers over riding jeans as I find textile pants far to warm when the sun finally comes out. The temperature varied from 15 degrees in north Poland to 38 degrees in Bosnia !!! A well vented textile jacket is a godsend as it is also waterproof. Very good point you make about point to point navigating as this is my preferred method using satnav and map in tandem. Maps are never wrong !!! I prefer to use small hotels and B and B type places as they will very often have a secure yard or similar to park your bike safely. Be aware that bike theft is not so much a problem as it is here in the UK,except in Italy!! Excellent point about staying at one place for several days and using it as a base as this is the way to see more of the country without the pain of constant loading and unloading the bike, this can get very tedious after a long hot day. Nothing beats that feeling of riding off the ferry at the start of a trip, after all my many journeys i still have that excitement and a little fear every time. LOVE IT. Ride on Ride on !!! Mike.

A good balanced overview thanks. Very much agree with two night stops for R&R and chance to actually explore where you are stopping. Regarding pre-booking all accommodation, we have moved away from that as it tends to restrict. We often we change routes based on the weather forecast and often we might speak with locals or other travellers who suggest better routes and places to visit so its great to be able to adapt. We do tend to book the next nights accommodation over a beer the night before so it removes the pressure and anxiety of doing it when arriving in the nights destination. Somehow it makes it a bit more of an adventure.

After some experimenting by now I usually book mminimum 2 nights-stops. I then use the one day in between to explore the area (without luggage) and use the next day to cover the distance to the next destination, which I like to be max 200 miles/ 320km. Especially as I still mix in some Camping this pattern has worked very well for me during my long trips across Europe. The advantage of being a pensioner ...

Good video mate, some of it doesn't apply to me but I'll talk about a few points that really did. Distance in a day - when I first started, there was a combination of 2 factors that influenced this: 1. Australia is stupidly big 2. Everyone seemed to be posting about how many K's they had managed in a day... Many of my early trips involved 10 hours riding a day! I can't avoid the sheer size of the place - but, after my first few tours, I firmly decided to (where practical) limit my daily K's to between 250 and 350 per day - this was to allow time to enjoy the ride and places, faff with cameras, eat and drink enough and avoid fatigue. With the video shooting, I went for the principal of film all the time and delete later - so all the time meant my helmet and rear camera - and extra cameras when I wanted. This meant I had to find ways to power the batteries externally so they would simply keep filming. There are 2 reasons I do that: 1. Saves a lot of time remembering to turn the things on and off 2. You can delete footage you don't want, but you can't create footage you didn't have. Cheers mate!
@blearyview2254
@blearyview2254 6 ай бұрын
I find about five hours in the saddle works for me even though the elapsed time with stops etc could be almost double the ride time, it all about getting a good balance to enjoy the day. Faffing with cameras takes up so much time as well. I too do the film everything and delete what not needed although I have many TB of data stored because I always think, maybe want that later haha. Great advice that you cannot create what you do not have. I cannot imagine just how big Aussie is, particularly when compared to the UK and the remoteness and all the wildlife that wants to eat you is another dimension that I have not been exposed to. Great comment CC.

Quite informatitive on preparations etc. I like an alarmed disclock as they screech like hell if you even sneeze on them. I go hard luggage all the way but use a small tanklock bag for valuables/essentials enroute. And if on my own, unclip and carry into the building to pay for fuel. It takes no time to do that. I am also a fan of the SANEF tag for paying for peage if you plan on using them to meet schedules. Nothing worse than fumbling with credit card and tickets (worse in wet weather when you try to get your fingers back into wet gloves).

Interesting and informative video, I am planning a trip to France and Switzerland in the summer, last time I rode a bike in France was early 90’s, a slight detail is that you can avoid the 40 CHF Swiss motorway tax by avoiding the Swiss motorway network, and as you say in your commentary, that’s what you wanted to do. I’m going to think carefully where I go, and keep off the motorways.

Very interesting - thanks for sharing. I have taken to doing some touring but choosing my tiny YB100 instead of my T100!! Last year all round Ireland, this year the NC500 (from the Cotswolds). Being of a slightly older vintage than you, getting my leg over is the issue so top boxes doing do it for me. Just bought a new XSR125 to continue with the small bike touring theme (I see you have a Meteor - I had one but as my main bike I didnt feel it had enough poke - in fact the XSR125 is not far off the Meteor, power-wise). Anyway, i think that soft luggage is what I need with waterproof interior and again not moving far from the bike although there are occasions (such as my walk to Duncansby Head) when you just have to trust folks or forfeit the experience? Satnav - I am very much over satnavved!! I took my old garmin but never used it, preferring to rely on WAZE on my phone and Beeline. Of course I avoid all motorways. Anyway I enjoyed your video - can't wait to get away again!!

Hello Rob, small bikes are great fun and the NT1100 will more than likely be my last big bike (hopefully will have it for a few years though). Go have a look at Lomo bags, they are completely waterproof and well priced. I got a good soaking in Shetland with the Classic and the Lomo bags, unlike my waterproofs, kept all the water out. I do fancy doing Ireland next year but not yet decided on destinations, like you I am already looking forward to new tours. I will not buy another sat nav, The Tom Tom is currently opened up as water once again got into the inners but will rely on phone app of some description. Thanks for the great comment. Alex

That was an entertaining watch just to see how others tour on the bike. I've always preferred hard luggage, but be aware while we were in Lisbon sightseeing a castle, someone broke into our panniers and stole our helmets and waterproofs. That was all that was in them at the time. So they can give a false sense of security. I now lock the helmets onto the bike frame with a cable lock through the chin bar (not theft proof, but they have to try a little harder) and try to park in an open area (I was hidden by a transit at the time). Plus nearly all my bikes have an audible alarm fitted since then because it was annoying that I was only about 300yds max away from the bike when it happened, so I might have heard it.
@blearyview2254
@blearyview2254 7 ай бұрын
It can be a nightmare when you out and about on the bike. If they want something bad enough then I do not suppose too much will stop them. I have been in Lisbon a few times with my old work and was warned about security and sorry to hear about the loss of helmets and damage to the bike. I have had an audible alarm before and that a great idea and worth thinking about and do use a cable lock for each of my bikes to secure my helmet. It one reason why I want to do more two or three nights stops so that my kit is locked up in hotel. Good to know you have enjoyed 👍

Hi Alex, you've pretty much covered everything there and come to more or less the same conclusions as I did during my travels round The UK for work. Although I had to travel to a strict schedule and cover more miles in a day the principles are the same. I'm not going to go through everything, I'll just give you my thoughts on the Sat Nav. I was usually away for between 3 and 5 days and always pre-planned my trips based on time rather than distance, leaving between 6am and 8am and arriving between 6pm and 8pm, allowing time for customer visits as required. This way I could plan more interesting routes avoiding major roads. I would pick a hotel for each day based on customer locations, book them to make sure they were available and then plan at least 2, usually 3 different routes with varying lengths for each day. This allowed me to adapt to changing weather and anything else that might cause delays, and it was easy to make small changes to the routes in the hotel if needed. It took a lot of time to do the planning but it always paid off on the trips. Cheers, Mick

Re distance per day. I’ve found that time is more important than distance. 200 miles in a day is a doddle on major roads, but it makes for a really long day in the Alps. The actual time you spend in the saddle per day is individual to the rider - I usually aim for around 5 hours per day, which is a full day riding when you include a few stops. Google maps is pretty good at estimating time between waypoints, so pre-planning is the key.

A great video. Very helpful, informative and thought provoking. i pre plan our tours (wife and I) well in advance and that includes the accommodation. I always book digs which can be cancelled free of charge just in case. Pre booking months in advance usually gets cheaper rates (I check just before the tour and I have seen big increases!!). We do around 4 to 5 days maximum before we have 'rest days' - that's when we book 2 or more nights in one location and explore, usually off the bike using public transport or plain old walking! We tend to stay in cities so there is plenty of places to eat, to stay and visit. Loved the footage of the road around Interlaken which was high up and passing through tunnels - which road was this? We visit Interlaken on next years tour and I would like to see these views. Good luggage advice - we have bought most of our luggage items second hand off ebay!! Its far too expensively priced when brand new!! For sat nav I use the Garmin 51 backed up with my phone and google maps - so far so good. We do a lot of highways so I tend to pre load the routes before we leave - one less thing to worry about!!. Have a great tour, ride safe and thanks for the advice.

Hello Nick great comment and thanks for the nice words. Pre booking will indeed save a lot of cash in my experience, I think I may have mentioned in a video somewhere but I did think about staying on another night or two in the Swiss hotel and the price had doubled. The road at Interlaken was the north side of the lake, I will try find out the name and post. The road at the end of the video was on the south side. I am away right now on another little tour and sat nav issues did not go away but that for another video haha. Enjoy your trip and ride safe. Alex

Thanks for the video, enjoyed your take on packing and security of the bike, I'm a soft luggage fan and pack non valuable stuff in them and the more valuable possessions in my lockable top box. I always take my old t shirts, pants and socks on a trip and throw them out at the end of each day, saves space etc. I usually take a large chain for peace of mind but it's so heavy I'm thinking that a good quality disc lock could be the way forward. Best wishes, Grant, Stourbridge

Morning Grant, thanks for the good suggestions, all my stuff is old so I better not chuck it out 🤣🤣🤣 I did try to take the chain but like you say it very heavy, so I just go with disk lock, if they want the bike then there is not much going to stop them. I have done a few trips now and each time it seems to be a refinement so every day is a learning day. I have been watching @bikingtravels and he uses wicking clothing and going to give that a try and see how it works out.

Hello Jim, thanks for the lovely comment. For me the NT1100 is perfect bike for long tours (I had the bike up some tight winding roads yesterday so it more than "just" as tourer). it is very comfortable on the standard seat, there is plenty room to move around, weather protection is excellent and the engine has plenty poke should you wish or indeed need to use it. I can do 2.5 hrs on it without feeling the need to stop for a stretch of the legs. Of course, that may not be the case for everyone.

Couldn't agree with you more, and that's exactly what I do. I think booking in advance is the worst thing you can do. It can spoil your holiday. My wife and I did it on our first trip in Europe, and it all went wrong when she became ill on the third day and we had to either cancel everthing else we had booked, or start playing catch up. We decided to cancel, and felt so much better being able then to travel each day as far as we felt like doing. To me working to a pre-planned schedule is work, not a holiday, and not as relaxing. What's the point of putting yourself under pressure when your on holiday, and spoiling that sense of freedom and adventure. And I can't understand why people are so concerned that they might have not have an internet connection for hotel booking. We've had no problem with just going to the tourist information office if we have to. It's always worked well for us, as it used to do before the internet existed, and at 70, I'm old enough to remember.

@@blearyview2254 Yes of course it’s all down to personal choice, and we can all learn from our own personal experiences. I think we should also keep in mind that a mechanical problem can send our best laid plans down the pan. Three years ago I bought a brand new BMW motorcycle which broke down after just 900 miles. Fortunately I wasn’t on a touring holiday. The dealership came and picked up the bike and after a week they still hadn’t solved the problem. Eventually they contacted the BMW engineers in Germany who came up with the solution. I was without the bike for nearly three weeks. This is another reason why I personally don’t book in advance, but I wish you many happy and trouble free bike touring holidays, and I look forward to more of your excellent videos. Thank you.
