Executing a tight turn in a small space in a boat with a single engine is one of those challenges that makes even experienced skippers take a deep breath, admits Jon Mendez.

You are incredible, I would be all over the place because when push comes to shove we all give to much of power because that is what we do when driving the car. Very soon we realise that boat is not a car and water is not a tarmac so all starts to go horribly wrong. I loaded your videos on my portable device and went out with my boat into some secluded place to practice your incredibly controlled manoeuvres. I believe that I become better skipper than before thanks to you.

Relaxing and using your brain is half of the art of smart boating. You show this in a perfect way and add the other half of valuable information. A real Master of Masters! Thank you and greetings from Lake Lucerne Switzerland!

I find these videos quite helpful as we have a 23’ single engine boat. Q: what kind of boat is that you’re piloting

Man how nice would it be to have such a smooth throttle switch! Mine cracks out of neutral into forward and cracks into reverse with an occasional grind if I'm not really firm with it... then full reverse power is only a mm behind that... it's a nightmare when trying to be precise!

It would be nice to see this sort of thing with a single outboard engine. Would it be just as easy?

In my (admittedly limited) experience, outboards are almost identical to sterndrives when handling at slow speed so it should be ok
