On Sunday, October 3rd, my boyfriend Glen and I decided to take a ride from Missoula, MT to Ovando, MT. On our way back, we headed south on hwy 200. I was looking around at the gorgeous scenery when Glen started to slow down as he saw a truck stopped in front of us. We stopped behind the truck and saw a bull elk approach the truck. The person in the truck must have had some food because the elk jumped up on his hind legs and peered in to the drivers window. (I have that on video as well) Then the elk jumped down and started to approach us. There were two actually. One was a bit smaller and had different looking antlers. I am not much of a hunter so I don't know why they appeared different than the other. I was surprised that the elk came so close to us and I could feel a great deal of tension between us and the animal. I am willing to bet that if Glen hadn't hit the throttle when he had, that elk would have jumped up on us. The elk chased us for a while and I don't know when he would have stopped hadn't I told Glen to lose it. I didn't want the animal to chase us on the road and put it in any danger so losing it seemed appropriate. I had enough excitement for one day!

That elk has more sense of road rules than anyone I know.. Stops to help out other travelers broken down, lane changes where permitted and returns to the travel lane when takeover is complete, never crosses the yellow line and stays within the speed limit.

That was an awesome video, Heather! Better that he was put down than to eventually get hit by a motorcycle, car or truck. And everyone is wrong about the 2nd animal. That was not a goat, that is my uncle Frank. He's been on a 2 week bender.

So I live in Ovando, and this elk has been around for a while. I'm not sure what is wrong with the elk, but it is having issues and isn't going to last through hunting season. When an elk is this, well domesticated, when all other elk in the area are extremely scared of people, there has got to be something wrong. Poor elk...

To those of you saying goat, that isn't a goat! That is a two year old elk. Don't know why he would act that way even in the rut. But cool, I travel that road three times a week and i think I saw him checking out vehicles going by on 10/8/13. Wasn't acting like a typical elk. Hmmm makes ya wonder. Cool video. Nice job folks.

Hmmm - well, I guess we can rule out the "he was attracted to the jacket" theory. Reminded me of the time my wife and I were stuck in traffic on a motorcycle in Yellowstone and a bear was working the cars in front of us. Fortunately the bear lost interest before he got to us, unlike your elk pal in the video. Great video, BTW.

Sorry Jim Pook, but the 2nd animal is NOT an elk. It is a domestic goat that the young bull had been hanging out with all summer. This was late summer and even if it was an elk they don't drop there antlers until around February. Bobby, the elk, was put down today because Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks decided he had become too tame. He had been hand fed and had no fear of humans. The more YOU KNOW!

Here's the thing- I love animals, I love elk, and I'm a Montanan too so I'm all about nature and all of that. I understand why we're all sad that this frisky elk died- he was great- but we should remember that when animals act abnormally aggressively FWP is obligated to step in sometimes. The motorcyclists are not responsible for this, they just happened to be there. And if it makes anyone feel better, general hunting season opens on Saturday anyway. Circle of life, friends.

I am amazed at the tree hugging Granola munching loons posting on this video. it is clear that the Elk was at the SUV in front of the bike. it left and paid a visit to the bike. If people missed the memo this animal is large and can actually hurt people on a bike (even if it did not mean to). The people on the bike moved away from the elk and Heather captured video of the elk when he decided to chase after them. If this animal was put down it was because it had become a nuisance So relax People

How presumptuous of you. "The elk was field dressed and the meat taken to be processed for the local food bank....Jaquith (FWP) said the decision to kill the elk was made before FWP was aware of the video.." Maybe the Granolas stop feeding the Elk and drawing them TO humans! Elk season starts in 9 days, this bull was dead the moment he started hanging around the highway. Thanks for the video of your encounter, Heather, rare indeed!

Unfortunately, this young spike bull, had been hand raised by someone. In almost all cases, this is a death sentence for the animal. When we met him early in the summer, he was very gentle. He lived a quiet life not knowing what species he was. Quiet, that is until Mother Nature appeared and drove him into full rut. At that point, he started to try to mount ANYTHING. It would only have been a matter of time before someone got hurt really badly. Sadly, this did not end well for him.

Getting out of there was the thing to do! Yet, from the safety of my home, two other possibilities came to mind as I watched the video, particularly seeing how far the bull chased you. One is that elk are herd animals. So when you fled, the animal took it as a flight signal and followed your lead. The other possibility was that the poor guy was simply being amorous. Too bad fish & game had to put him down.

Thankfully, Heather seems to be able to keep this in perspective as well as, like most in the rural west, speak clearly for herself. Just to address the major knee-jerk reactions: Elk: No question. Period. Animal was reported and the decision made to euthanize before the video was known by FWP. 100's get hit by vehicles in MT, animal dies and sometimes so do people. May or may not have been fed, the rut does strange things. If so, it was not fed by Heather. Meat was saved. Great video.

I don't know what video/animal you are looking at, but I don't see a goat in this video. What there is, is two Elk. The one close to the bike is a young bull, while the other one off the side of the road and a ways back is a mature bull. Elk drop their antlers every year after the run (mating season) and grow new ones during the summer/fall of the following year. Each year they get bigger antlers. The More You Know!

Poor Elk.Thats not a chase, its like he wants a playing partner.Look at the guys chased by Ram in Australia, thats a chase, not this one.The biker could have easly cross the street and he won't have been close to the elk, plus, even if it was near them,he didn't show any sign of agression, the damn bitch screaming in the back mislead the rider.Even after you can see the rider stops number of time and the elk don't chase them. This damn rangers would use any motive to hunt.
