In this episode, we show the viewer how to check the wear and tear on your clutch using the 1980’s Suzuki GS/GSX bikes as an example. We follow this up with how to work out what your problem is and what to do about it. But seeing how we are delving into the bottom end; we also show the viewer how to service the oil filtration system.

Great channel Bob and loved this one on the clutch. I’ve got a ‘80 GSX1100 and now I can tackle the clutch with confidence. Where can I get that special tool, or did you make that from a clutch steel plate? Cheers. Andy.

Thanks Andy, no, I made the tool from an old clutch plate. Some bike shops sell something that looks like a pair of vice-grips but with the jaws at right angles to the handles. These are used to grip the hub splines and hold it, whilst the nut is undone. I have a pair actually, but I use the shop made tool on the GSX machines. To be honest, a good rattle gun will usually undo the nut without the hub being gripped tightly.

He, he, an old clutch plate with a handle welded on. I do have a store bought one which is like a set of multi grips with the jaws at a right angle to the handles, but it tends to mark the clutch hub. I specialise in these bikes so I made the tool from some worn out plates that I had.😊

As a callow youth, myself and two mates, made one for one of our bikes just like it out of a piece of plate. We cut out the rough shape using a drill and a hacksaw and then set to work with files to refine the centre and outside and then cut the spline teeth. Took the three of us a few days to make, a lot of hard work, but that was the tenacity of youth back then I guess 😂😂😂
