Now you have the tank cracked open, I'm curious if you're gonna get an email from the seller: _''Dear Mr Jones. Can I please have the 2 marbles back, along with the bit of welding wire. They were not meant to be part of the sale. Cheers''._ Stick with it Craig - _Indian Larry_ would have looked at this and said _''pfft! not a problem...minor details''_ and once cut open, he'd have dished it and made it 'real purty with some paint'. You have the tools, you have the patience, and you have the kin-o-how! All the best. Dogue.

Very interesting to see the inside of a bad repair job. It brought up memories of a friend who restored 50s era Indian chiefs and fours and opened and straightened tanks that way. Skill over money!

Haha, the poor man's low fuel warning alarm. Stick a couple of marbles in your tank, when you hear them rattle around, you know you're just about done. Of course it helps if you don't glue them in place with tank sealer.

A good old boy I worked with once told me, if man made it then man can fix it. In reality it’s not 100% true but with metal you’ve got options to try at least. Plus I don’t believe it’s a total waste of time as even the best of the best will still get better and learn even more with more practice, which might mean you save something in the future that you might not have done before. If it was purely down to time money and efficiency we’d all just replace rather than repair when something had done it’s time. We’re here for the art and history not just the end result. Keep on keeping on brother.

I love how Craig just looks like he’s pottering and dithering around the shed, looking for his tools etc. Then you realise that like all the genuinely skilled craftsmen he just makes it look that easy and when you see the results of his “pottering about” you realise just how good he really is. Buuuut- Craig ffs please put a guard on your grinder- if a disk let’s go mate no safety glasses will save your eyes!
@geraldswain3259

Skilled tradesmen very rarely have a guard on because it limits your ability to access tight areas. I'm a retired tinsmith by trade and never used one and I started with a 9" grinder in the 60s and must have owned one the very first 4" grinders which were then called a grinderette by Wolf . I would like to point out this is in no way a recommendation to D I Y novices .

Perfect for a rat build done right. Post apoc repair job type thing. Hopefully it is salable, if not I can see uses for it. Least you didn't do it like the SRK cycles guys who split the tank down the tunnel and had the tank seal lifted in strips like orange peel

I am sooo glad you did this. I want to make a tank one day, and see one from the inside was good. I can't wait to see you revive the thing/ Take it back to bare metal and dress it up nicely before resealing it again. Thank you. I worried whether I would still enjoy the channel after the split, but to see you do all this is the best - something we wouldn't have seen in the old format. Superb.

Craig, you did the right thing mate! Never a waste of time... These things are too few on the ground. And the monkey metal the replicas are made from are never going to be the same quality. Mate that Matchy tank you got was the best unmolested tank I have seen in the 30+ years I have been mucking around will classic bikes. Unfortunately you get good and you get bad, but you have the skills... Keep up the good work man!

I think grinding it open like you did was perfect. Now we get to see everything that was done wrong, learn from that, and learn from watching you fix it correctly. I'm guessing after losing their marbles in it (see what I did there? lol!) they just gave up. The sealer was probably too thick to get the marbles out, so they quit in frustration. Fair play to that. Keep up that great work!

Do you have a process for cleaning out petrol tanks before you start cutting and welding. I know a tank like that has been sitting around so long that all the petrol is probably long evaporated.
